Guys on Joxx said there is some talk of Mullen being Byrnes #1....they just spent about 20 minutes talking about how its a perfect time for mullen to bolt because simply put, we suck, and if we didn't get a good class after last year, we aren't getting one.

$2.5million+ a year. He isn't going anywhere. Arizona isn't going to offer or willing to pay a head coach that's currently dead last in the SEC standings.

While I seem to doubt Mullen is his #1, he hired the guy so I'm sure he's on the list.

I would bet that Peterson is on the top of his and every other BCS team's list - will be interesting to see who emerges there though. To fire the guy midseason I think tells you that he has somebody in mind though.

but the Joxx guys don't frequently have objective views on things outside the state of Alabama that involve certain SEC schools, and they don't like State.

This is ridiculous. No way Greg tries to poach from MSU. He worked with most of our current staff and coaches for several years, he isn't burning bridges / back stabbing his friends.

energetic coaches out there who want to win.....like Mullen. If you can say one thing about the ninja...his moves are calculated and usually are pretty good. I don't see it happening.

If Mullen wins 6 games this season (which seems a 50/50 chance at best), given Dan's salary of $2.5 million a year, that equals roughly $416,000.00 a win.

If Arizona wants to dip their beak in this welfare scam, then more power to them.

His job is to make the University of Arizona a winner- and how he does in that job will affect his future.<div>
</div><div>If he thinks Mullen is the best person to coach there- he'll attempt to hire him.</div>

I find it amazing how a coach who is reviled for his overly brash character, his inability to recruit, his being unable to beat anyone in the SEC West not named Ole Miss, and all while riding Tim Tebow's coat tails to glory is simultaneously the hottest young name in coaching whose name always pops up at every vacancy. The schtick is getting a little old at this point.

but going to Arizona right now to me is no more than a lateral move. The only issue to me might be if Dan gets frustrated that he can't recruit "his way" well enough here to get the players to be competitive in this conference. But, by the same token, Arizona isn't exactly flooded with football talent either although they do have pretty good proximity to Texas talent. Even with that said I still have doubts Byrne would make a huge push to take the coach he hired from his former school. Too many other good choices out there to create that kind of bad blood from a school that still thinks very highly of him.

Surely some of the places he'd recruit for Arizona would be the same places he was recruiting at Utah. I wonder how much opportunity there is to get California talent and if getting that talent is lower drama compared to the drama level of SEC recruiting?

1. Why leave the SEC?? It is the best conference in college football hands down. If you want to be the best you have to play and beat the best. Mullen is a winner, not a quitter.

2. Money.. We can and will pay more than AZ will for a head football coach. Period.

3. Family.. Dan and his family are happy in S-Vegas and aren't moving anytime soon.

4. Building a program.. Mullen really wants to stay and Starkville and win an SEC title here.

concerned but I agree that I don't think Byrne is going to take the Mullen route for professional reasons. Arizona should have no troublehiring a good coach especially if they are willing to pay which it sounds like they are.

When I was in school at State a few years ago, Bill Byrne was in town on a weekend TAMU had a BYE. Bill and Greg both came and had a Q&A with my sports admin class.

The one thing I remember Bill saying was that you never fire a coach unless you've got a pretty good idea of who was gonna be the next guy in line. He said when his basketball program was in shambles, he had been scouting and recruiting coaches for almost 2 years so when he gave the current coach the ax, Billy Gillespie stepped right in.

Moral of the story is, Greg wouldn't fire Stoops just just because of a 1-5 start. Byrne probably has a good idea who the next HC is gonna be there and I doubt it's Mullen.

The answer is yes. You can argue that 'it's different' since Cohen was an alum but the fact that Byrne asked for permission to speak to Cohen shows that he will do what he has to do in his current job, wherever that may be.

That's not saying that he's coming after Mullen. It is saying that he would if that's what he thought he needed to do.

All you ever seem to post is that Dan Mullen is overpaid for his W-L's. As I've responded before, Mullen is worth a lot more to MSU than W-L's. He has generated excitement in the program, and unified a fractured fanbase. This has resulted in a massive increase in ticket sales, increased donations to the Bulldog Club, and increased sales of merchandise. He more than earned his $2.5 million this season before the games were even played.

Now, certainly, in the coming years he will have to create some wins to go along with the fan expectations, or the ticket sales will start to drop off again. But right now he is earning every penny he is being paid.

And that's why I'm a little worried about Arizona. They NEED a coach like Mullen who will energize the fanbase, and they might be willing to overlook his record if they think he's the right fit for their program. There's no way a school like UGA would pay $3 million a year for a coach with a 6-6 record, but Arizona maybe?......

I don't know if the Ninja will call Mullen with an offer but I bet he does call him for some input. Aside from Petersen, it wouldn't suprise me if Malzahn was on the short list too.

People seriously questioned why he wasnt chosen for the UF job last year....that is the best job in the country by most peoples standards and one step from his former job.

Mullen left the 2nd chair 3 years ago and if I'm right about his personality....he aint going back to second fiddle ever 17ing again.

He will be successful here, or unsuccessful somewhere else with a MUCH higher potential for a national championship.
