we had some folks on here saying he could run, or least did in high school. But it seems as far as Mullen is concerned, Tyler can't run.

and this is why we are offering Newton everything under the sun to come here next year- we don't really want to go the route of Russell being the QB and having to change the offense

If Lee was 4 inches taller, he would not be at Miss State. He was one of the best JUCO QB's around. His only problem is cow **** piles up taller then him. As for Russell if Mullen did not have plans on him being the guy of the future, his butt would have been in the game by now. He is keeping that red shirt on for a reason. Russell won the State 5A championship leading his team in the victory over South Panola, ending what 90 or so game win streak. They guy can play. I have no worries about him.

Mullen sets Lee up notice how he hands to Dixon in the first parts of the game with no read. Then Mullen turns Lee lose in the late parts of the drive. I played triple option QB . No way he not being told to hand it to Dixon alot of the first half of games. The reads would tell Lee to keep it alot more than he does.

Notice how Lee's run are always wide open . Mullen has fooled the DE. This is a plan by Mullen. That being said any jake leg QB with the holes Lee has could run these plays.</p>

b/c i don't worship a guy who already spurned us once? B/c i don't fawn over a guy who already failed at Div 1 football, got into trouble multiple times, and got sent packing to a JUCO? Last year TR was the hero...this year, people think it's newton. Let's give Tyler his chance first. don't forget he landed us half our class last year...our best class in years by the way. you don't think the team wants to play for him instead of somebody that's already failed once? So his numbers are great in JUCO...so were Riddel or Ridell or whoever the hell he was. His numbers were great. If I'm not mistaken, so were the midget's. So what? I think Newton would be a great change of pace guy to bring in for a few series, but TR is the leader we need at QB.

Just b/c a failed HS coach spews garbage on here to try to sound smart, that doesn't make Newton great and TR suck.

...he will accept no discussion of anybody but Cameron Newton playing quarterback for the next two years because he has decided that Russell sucks and does not fit the offense. Anybody who believes differently will be told so, 10,000 times.

I myself will be fine with Russell starting next year. If Newton comes, that's great, but I am not convinced he is the savior of MSU football. Reminds me an awful lot of Schaeffer, Brent. And with the way the qb has to be a smart player in this offense, I am not sure a laptop thief is the guy with what it takes upstairs to run it.

damn...surprised no one pulled this quote yet. this just shows that mullen and DB34 are not on the same page (surprise surprise)

"If we put Tyler Russell in to play, it would be because Tyler Russell is going to play and you would expect him to be the starter for the rest of the season," Mullen said.

From that quote it sounds more like Mullen is saying that when Russell is ready to play then he is our future. I guess with Brady, Heath, Gillespie, and Gotfried all gone, Coach has deemed Cam Newton his new man to salivate over.

And he's wrong again.

His "reasons" are just as hollow as they were before on other topics.

Coach34- Crooms will be fired at the end of the season
Sixpack- no way we will fire Crooms- the media backlash will be awful
Result? We fire Crooms

Coach34- "We need to play Augustus if we want to beat good teams"
Sixpack- "Kodi sux- Stans knows best"
Result? Stans plays Augustus- we win SEC Tourney

Coach34- "We need to RS Tyler Russell. We will be fine with Lee at QB"
Sixpack- "No way. Russell may start by Jackson State. Mullen said we werent a RS program"
Result? Russell is RS'ing

Coach34- "We need to beef up the basketball schedule" (D@A was in on this too)
Sixpack- "We dont need a tougher schedule. We won't play road games without return home games"
Result? We schedule UCLA in LA with no return home game

Yep, just wait Bubba...we'll see how this one turns out too

"failed HS coach" knows a helluva lot that you dont. The WR's and RB's dont give a monkey 17 about who the QB is- they just want production.

It's simple- Newton signs- he is going to be the QB the next 2 years. If he doesnt- then Russell will battle Baseball Boy for the job and probably win it. Then we will tweak the offense to run less option and throw in a few more passes. Not really that hard to see what's coming- well, for you I'm sure it is. Good luck wearing your T. Russell jersey to games next year if Newton signs

your entire argument is based on the idea that Tyler Russell is slower than Jon Pinette after a vegas buffet. Recruiting sites say he runs a sub 4.9 40, which isn't Mike Vick speed but is definitely an option to keep a COLLEGE LEVEL defensive end honest from time to time. Tebow isn't fast by any means either but he gets plenty of rushing yards. Why is Russell's running ability so bad? Maybe he has poor vision. Maybe he's slower than what scouts have him listed as. Maybe he banged your ex-wife. Or maybe he's just better throwing the ball than running and if we have him in there he will throw a lot more than he runs.

Gee, that's funny, our current qb throws more than he runs. I guess you ARE right. We won't be changing the offense.

1) Never said TR wasn't good.
2) Spurned us? Did we even have a chance at the guy? Would you want to play for McCroomvey on offense? Especially, at QB? +1 for Newton not wanting to play for on a dead-end offense. At least he went somewhere where his talents could potentially be used.
3) He didn't fail at Div 1 football. He was stuck behind the second coming of Christ.
4) Yes, he stole a laptop. He 17'ed up and moved on.
5) Newton is a freak of nature athlete and fits in better with Mullen's comfort zone on offense.
6) We don't have to <span style="font-style: italic;">give</span> TR anything. He hasn't proven anything yet other than he's capable of getting beat out by a midget walk-on, Smokey McRelf, and a minor league baseball player that hasn't seen the gridiron in years. The only person that beat out Newton was the alleged best college football player of all time. Sure, Mullen might have intended to redshirt TR from the beginning, but come on, it's the THREE DEEP.

methinks he knows what the hell is doing and planning as far as QB's are concerned.

Mullen knows exactlly what hes doing. Personally I would like to see Relf get the majority of the touches to finish out the season. With a Russell/Relf system next year. In that order.

Yeah, we're really fine with the midget at QB. 2-4 is awesome. especially considering we could easily be 5-1 w/o all of his turnovers.

don't assume for a second that you know more than me about football. I played a lot of years hoss. I just chose a profession that I could actually be successful at when i got done with it.

If I didn't know who Tyler Russell was and I came along this message board and read it, I would probably think Tyler Russell was the end of the world after seeing Coach's comments.
In all fairness its C34's opinion but damn I really cant understand the Russell bashing we have going on here. And by no means do we have Cameron Newton. I will be surprised if we land him. I was excited from day one when Russell committed and eventually signed and I am still really excited about him playing next season and watching him in the spring game. Mullen won't have to change our offense up as drastically as it sounds. The only reason for any serious changes would be to protect the young quarterback from getting rattled/exposed.
I would really like to know what Russell did to make coach34 turn a 180 about him.

If Newton signs I think:
Newton #1 man 80% of snaps
Russell #2 man 20% of snaps
Baseball: works on passing #3 option
Relf - gone or tight end / QB

Year 2:
Newton 70
Russell 30 getting ready for start next year
Base ball: some snaps for Russell / baseball combo next year</p>

He's a tough runner. Saw him in the State Championship game last year. He ran up the gut and got pounded by those USP linebackers...he simply jumped up and ran back to the huddle. He may not be the best runner, but he's got amazing touch on the football and isn't afraid.

...way over-simplifying things here on the zone read and you know it. At the very least, even on the zone read, the QB is going to read coverage and check blitzes, so he knows if he needs to change the play, or at the very least, not give the zone read away.

And the OL protection is generally called by the center, not the QB.

He made a good point that the whole offense doesn't have to be overhauled to be more pass-happy than run-happy. Your counter-argument is weak.
