and 6 of them are 6'1 and taller. Does this not contradict his running spread style? We have suddenly become a very tall WR school. Are we the #1 rated WR class right now? We have to be close with 8 17ing receivers committed.

Like I've been saying

No matter who our QB is, and how well they can run- we are still going to have to be able to throw the ball.

Having tall, outside WR's and H-backs actually fits the spread option very well. We just need to keep the small slot WR's in the slot where they belong and where they can use their athleticism to make plays.

I was brainstorming this the other day. What exactly are we doing? Is dak really going to be slinging it around the yard?

I think it's the opposite - we want big, physical WR's who can block downfield.

Big targets in the red zone + dominating outside blockers.

Are you kidding?...

..for years this board bitched about how we had nothing but midgets playing WR. Now you are bitching about their height? We are signing so many WR's because graduation decimated our WR corps. Damn. Unbelievable.

Dont get your panties in a wad. Just stating the obvious. For what its worth, short wr can block too, see Hines Ward. Anyway, I scouted bogue chitto and wouldn't be surprised if Wells never catches a pass on O or D. He is a blazer, no doubt, but he does not like contact, and was not even the best receiver on his team. That kids last name is Martin. And he would be a good one.

Not complaining about big, tall WR's. Just think we have other needs at

this point other than WR and yes I realize we just lost 4 seniors.

This guy gets it- we are recruiting bigger WR's to be more physical to block for Prescott and crew...they also make easier targets on play action passes

Experiment

4 Wr's in a route. Our current avg height of 6' vs our future avg height of 6'4. Think of their wingspans as a circle or the area where they can haul in a pass, including their bodies and areas close to it.

6'- avg wingspan is approx 6'4. Area of their catchable areas is 30.68 square feet per player. That number multiplied by the 4 players in a route is 122.72 square feet that the QB can throw a catchable ball.

6'4- avg wingspan is approx 6'9. Area of a catchable area is 35.77 square feet per player. That number multiplied by the 4 players in a route is 143.01 square feet that the QB can throw a catchable ball.

Quick Analysis- The taller WR's give a QB 20 more feet of target area. This should translate to higher completion %. These numbers obviously don't count in the defenders but the point stands. That many bigger guys makes bigger targets that should help a QB exponentially. Also, I hate geometry so I may have 17ed that up.

I would be surprised if DeeeeRunnnya isnt a TE before it is all said and done. Looks like a taller Malcolm Johnson to me - looks a lot more Aaron Hernandez than Larry Fitzgerald. Kid is already 215.

Smith and Gray are sub 6'0 burners and Austin may never get here. That really leaves just Chappelle, Hammond (who could be a TE eventually as well) and Christy as big WRs.

Really no telling where Wells and Holmes wind up on the field.

I was good in geometry and you fu17ed me up. Look, Hey, great. We have some wideouts who can help hide some inaccuracy's. Great. I also say we take a step down of "accuracy" after Tyler leaves. Im not opposed to recruiting the best player available, I just do not think our lack of WR will be what gets us beat. It will be lack of depth on the O line and our incompetent quarterback play. Sorry, no sunshine to pump. Until I see Mullen recruit a Qb and developed his offense, it might take another 4 years, the whole scheme will be questioned. Im a huge fan of the spread/run offense. Im not a huge fan of the spread/sack offense.

You realize we were like 30th in the country in sacks allowed this past season, right? We had our share of problems, but pass protection wasn't one of them.

Inflated Numbers

You realize we were like 30th in the country in sacks allowed this past season, right? We had our share of problems, but pass protection wasn't one of them.

All of our offensive numbers were inflated due to our non-conference schedule. Outside of Chad Bumphis I have trouble naming one offensive player whose level of play was consistent in SEC play and non-conference play.

WR's are nice to sign but until we start signing offensive linemen who can push SEC D-linemen around we are going to struggle to make a move in the West.

You have to have several things. You have at least one, really two guys to stretch the field deep. Otherwise people will move the safety's within 12 yards of LOS and compact you down ala LSU. If you can't double move LSU, and hit them deep your 17ed. Another good example was UGA last year they sure as hell were not worried about deep balls. Same goes for mostly all aggressive SEC defenses. That is part of the reason we couldn't run very well, no one worries about over the top so they move up in the box. It is hard to block 9 with 6. Big boys outside who can catch a quick route break a tackle and beat you change the defenses attitude. The more of them the better. Personally, I am sick of 5'10" and "quick". I want someone who will take the ball from you and make you like it.

Chappelle and Smith are the ones being signed to offset graduation. The rest of these guys are being signed for the future. A future where, obviously, Mullen wants all types of athletes.

While I don't know that we necessarily need 8, the 8 that we have committed right now actually seem like a good mix to me. 4 tall/lean guys, 3 shorter/speed guys, and 1 stout one that may very well turn into a TE.

agree - pretty good mix ... I remember 2 years ago Berry and Bumphis went down with season ending injuries ... it's nice to be able to fill-in when something unexpected happens ... it appears Dan is trying to build around Russell's senior year and leave Dak with some quality & experience when Tyler leaves but yes, 8 seems like a lot

I could see Wilson as a DE. Small chance, but it could happen.

Aren't two of them JUCO?

Seems like a decent chance a freshman or two might not get to redshirt, and one may be greyshirted, so it should be pretty easy to end up spreading the 6 freshman over at least two if not three classes. Still a large WR class, but not crazy large, especially considering the production we have coming back.

Correct. Concrete Shoe Russell was to blame for about 50% of the sacks...

You realize we were like 30th in the country in sacks allowed this past season, right? We had our share of problems, but pass protection wasn't one of them.

That and his holding on to the ball, like he's wearing the red/yellow jersey in 7v7 drills, during the actual game.

Winner ...

Big targets in the red zone + dominating outside blockers.

Someone said that early in the season, 6' 6" De'Runnya Wilson had seven catches and six were for TDs and he has no problem blocking either.

We haven't had that kind of receiver in a while.
