I'm stuck somewhere between a rock and a hard place on this issue. When the coaching carousel started and Mullen's name came up yet again for another "big time program" I was dissapointed to say the least. Then coach Hud was rumored to being in the running for some pretty dang good coaching searches but pulled his name out due to the fact that is heart was at MSU. Man, that made me feel good. I was ready for Mullen to go ahead and take the Penn St. job and get Coach Hud on board. Then BOOM, Quay Evans commits to us and say's "look for some more big time recruits to jump on board". I instantly thought, oh crap, we have to keep Mullen. In my opinion a championship team starts on the DL and signing Quay, Autry and Ward would be huge for our program. If Mullen were to leave and possibly take Wilson with him, that could possibly kill all of our momentum. So as a state fan I'm torn between which scenario I would rather have play out.
If I were a recruit I wouldn't care who the head coach was at MSU, I would go play football there because of my love for the program. Unfortunately, those recruits are few and far between.
So, assuming I were a recruit that didn't have a preference as to which school I played for, I just wanted to play in the NFL one day and my college decision was based on which coach/system would get me there, and I believed that guy is Mullen, I would be hesistant to go to MSU. Mullen's name seems to be in the mix for nearly every major coaching search. Regardless of wether or not he takes the job at Penn St. this year, I would still be worried that he would leave after the next year, or the next. I would want a coach that was commited to that school just as he would expect me to commit to that school.
I really like Mullen, I think he has our program going in the right direction but I'm still a little hesitant to fall in love with the guy because I'm worried he's going to break my heart and leave for another program. That would piss me off, the last thing I want is for MSU to be a stepping stone to a coaches "dream job." He could erase that by publically announcing that he isn't going anywhere, that this is where he wants to be and wants to raise his kids here and is here for the long haul. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that.
With all that being said, this would be the perfect scenario in my opinion. Hopefully, Strickland and Coach Hud have been working a deal behind the scenes and sometime after signing day we will hire Coach Hud as the Head O.C. and the HEAD COACH IN WAITING. I'm a believer in Coach Hud, I think he is an offensive genius. But more than anything, I am a believer that MSU is Coach Hud's dream job. That is selling point to recruits and that's what it is going to take for us to take the next step and be relevant year in and year out.
Thoughts?
