Mullen is not going to Miam(Fl)

He's more concerned about his family right now than moving again just to have a faster route to a championship. He's stated many times that he thinks he can win here, and he's done well for himself so far. But he's just had a son and his wife loves it here in Starkville, so she says, and if you want to raise a family this is a good place to do it, I think that is what it comes down to. Mullen is a father and a husband first, he wants his wife to be happy and he wants what is best for his famliy. If the Mrs. is happy then it's all good. They live in a quiet football town in the middle of nowhere - one of the last frontiers, if you will, down here in this backwoods, deep South state where the athletes are awesome, if you can keep them in state. She doesn't want their son growing up in Miami, FL, there is all sorts of trouble down there, whether you live in a gated community or not. She's happy here and, in turn, so is he.

Now if a dream job comes calling I wouldn't blame him for leaving, but I don't think he's gone until they do. Jobs like Penn State, Michigan, UF, Texas, USC (maybe), Tenn (maybe), LSU (maybe), Ohio State... You get the idea

There is not a better job out there right now than Mississippi State. Outsiders can bash Starkville all they want, but until you've lived there and have embraced the town and people, you just don't know how great of a city it really is/can be. Dan may leave one day, but it's going to be for a dream job like you mentioned. Not somewhere like Miami. Having an infant son, that is just not a spot I can see him or Megan wanting to go. I just wish they'd announce his extension and raise tomorrow and end all of the speculation.

you can't have a great life for your family in the Miami area. The weather is awesome, there are more recruits in a 50 mile radius of Miami than there are in the entire state of Mississippi, and there are much better educational opportunities for their child.

the sad fact is that if we don't do so well next season...and you all KNOW that could easily happen...then the same people sooo worried about him leaving now will be talking about how horrible he is.

Any head coach of a major college program has the sense to know this and will do exactly what he thinks is in HIS best interest. Loyalty is BS unless it works both ways. We want a coach to be loyal because we love State, but let him lose a couple of years and we'll kick his *** to the curb. Period.

That being said, I don't know Mullen, but from everything he's said so far (State was the only call he's ever gotten in all these years, wants to coach in SEC, wife loves it here,actually cockey/confident enough to thinkhe can take this team to the SEC Championship game, etc) I don't think he's looking at this as a "stepping stone" job. If he really want's to be in the SEC (and who wouldn't?) where else would he go? There is NO team in the SEC that is going to win every year, just ask Alabama and Tennessee.

but Starkville, believe it or not, is actually a damn good place to raise a kid as well. Good people, good values, decent schools, no gang violence, etc. Weather is just as nice, if not nicer, if you're into seeing the seasons change and all. Recruiting - well, if you are too lazy to drive more than 50 miles to get a kid, well, you're probably too lazy to be successful. As I said earlier, much better opportunities will come for him. He can make 2.5M or more until that day comes and be a God in Starkville. Who knows, he might just wind up staying and build something special here a la Beamer or Petersen. Most folks would have thought he (Petersen) would be gone from Boise now, but he realized how much he liked the place and how good he had it there. We're 2 plays from being 10-2 this year. That, to me, tells me Mullen knows he can win here, which is what he is all about. He ain't leaving for this job.

schools in Miami area. Starkville public schools are average at best, and the private schools aren't any better. You can't tell me there aren't better schools in such an affluent area as Miami, Fl.

Also, when you make 2-3 million dollars, you're not really worried about gang violence.

He has stayed in Boise because he has a son who has a rare medical condition that the hospital there happens to have a super specialist for. I should say that, a health care professional from there shared this with me. I certainly don't think it's the only reason he has stayed, but it is a significant factor.<div>

Everyone can have an opinion on whether Miami is a more/less desirable place to live than Starkville, or whether the Miami job is a top job, or whether the Miami job is so much better than the MSU job that it's worth the jump, etc...

But nobody on here knows Mullen or his family personally, no one knows what they really think of Starkville, no one knows what they'd think of the possibility of living in Miami, and no one knows whether Mullen would leave for Miami if offered. And it's idiotic to act as though you do.

best to educate him during his younger years anyways. I swear, some of you act like there's not even a book or a computer at any Starkville school, we're just a bunch of dumb 17'n rednecks.

My point was that upper level education, as far as schools are concerned, don't really start till Junior High/High School. Mullen could stay another 4-5 years before his son is even in 1st grade, so it's not like education for him (as of now) is of the greatest importance.

Let's say he stays here 4 more years - That's 12M+ he would have made at MState. You don't think he could take that money, move pretty much anywhere he wanted, put Cannon in the best school possible (in 1st grade mind you), and still never have to work if he didn't want to and go on to have a wonderful life? He absolutely could....if he wanted to. Of course he's not going to retire like that more than likely, but he very well could if he wanted..

He will go on to bigger and better things, more than likely, one day. Nobody is denying that. Bur from what I see out of him and Megan, I don't see them going to Miami. We'll see if I'm right or wrong soon enough.

Miami just fired a man who cleaned up their program after going 7-5. They also very rarely get over 40k to watch a game. Miami is different than every college in the country. Miami won't put a huge banner on the side of their stadium for a coach who just went 5-7. MSU is a lot more loyal and gives more leeway than most colleges. Jackie got 3 years of total trainwreck games. Croom was only competitive in 1 year out of 5 and it still probably took 45-0 to cost him his job. Of course I am sure Mullen has looked at all these type things.

We, as diehard fans, tend to underestimate how much this kind of stuff matters, but coaches are fathers too. I live in starkville, and have a seven year old. Public schools here are pretty bad as are most in non-wealthy areas of the state. The academy is fine up until the late junior high/high school years, but after that its pretty bad. I graduated from Northwest Rankin about a decade ago, and I would say it is at least twice as good as SA. That being said, if I made $1.2M this year (just missed it. damn recession), I could find supplemental tutoring from a nearby university that would cancel out the mediocrity of the the schooling or go the "home" schooling route with that kind of money. My point is that the surrounding area of a university has a huge bearing on a head coach's decision, but that kind of stuff can be bought easily.

is taht I know plenty of people who have gone to starkville schools and are really successful. I also know plenty of successful, smart people who have moved to starkville or want to move to starkville. I don't think they care any less about their kids than most people.

I realize the school thing is an issue with some people but I think it gets blown out of proportion.
