For me I wouldn't really mind a 2 for 1 or a 3 for 1, though I'd still prefer to even do those with schools in other states just because they offer exposure in other areas without really coming in to recruit against us.
I doubt Mullen would want to do a 1 for 1 with USM, which is where those conversations will end. USM, for whatever reason, refuses to play a Mississippi school unless it's 1 for 1.

We should play them under the same terms that we play Midd Tenn St or La Tech. And we should play them becuase it would be great fun, win or lose.

I say we play all the ****** teams in the state first. I love the Jackson State deal. We need victories, no matter how they come.
Even though I feel that you should be ready to play anybody on any given Saturday, I don't like the idea of playing Southern, because obviously they have everything to gain and we have everything to lose.

Does it help your recruiting when you beat them? I doubt it. If they beat you..... it certainly helps them.
For State, that game ranks 4th or 5th in terms of rivalry, certainly not higher than Bama or Ole Miss.

If you lose to Southern - all hell breaks loose because you lost to the ****** Conference USA team not to mention the fact that a loss can completely screw recruiting for us if they continue to win.
This is not to say southern is ******, in fact I believe they wouldve beaten us or ole miss numerous years lately.

game. While we would be preoccupied with an upcoming SEC game, OR coming off an SEC game, their entire focus would be on playing us, whenever the game would be played. It's just not a good idea for us at all, truly a no win situation. As it is, they don't usualy get any recruit or recruits that we really want, so playing them is all to their advantage..period. It's just the biggest game of the year for them, and really means nothing to us. On the other hand, I guess maybe Coach Mullen has no fear, and that's good.

There is absolutely nothing to gain. If you win you are supposed to win, because you are in the SEC, you lose, well it elevates USM.
Also, their players will be jacked up for the game because most of them wanted to play in the SEC, but didn't have the option, and they will have something to prove.

When it comes to playing USM, Mullen is just a glassy-eyed idealist who would like to see 2 in-state programs play a football game. Mullen has yet to be educated on all the inherent evils associated with playing USM.
Once the MSU fanbase educates him on how there is nothing to gain by playing USM & everything to lose, he'll suddenly become silent on the issue (that is, if he wants to keep his job).

Funny because I can see both sides of that coing being positive and negative. What is your opinion? Sometimes I think it's more of MSU being scared. If we'd just man up and beat the **** out of them like we should, it would take care of itself.

I agree there is nothing to gain playing USM. However, if we have to go on the road to play MTSU and LaTech and play a FCS team at home every year, I just rather play USM. There is absolutely nothing interesting about watching State play at those places. State fans and the state in general would be much more interested in a game vs USM.
Yeah, I know we get their best shot. Well, Memphis gives/gave State and OM it's best shot every year also. We managed that. Tulane, UAB, Houston beat us a few times. We survived. Hell, losing to USM is alot more respectible than losing in Ruston or to Tulane and UAB.

Like I said, Mullen doesn't realize that USM is going to want a 1 for 1. He's probably assuming he can play the smaller schools in Mississippi and either do them as a buy game like Jackson State, or at worst do a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1. Once they present him the 1 for 1 or nothing idea, he'll probably change his tune.
...it's another opportunity to play an in-state game, and we'd have a lot of fans there. For all the talk that we get nothing from playing them, well, we certainly shouldn't be scared of them. This is no different than doing home and home arrangements with Houston, UAB, or Memphis. If we play those teams but won't play USM, all that says is that we're scared to play USM.

That game is a free home game (never has to be returned), which allows you to have 7 home games most years (assuming a halfway competent AD which we've only recently acquired) and allows you to get to a bowl with a 5-6 I-A record vs. a 6-6 I-A record. The I-AA game is going to happen every single year (except that I think in 2010 LT has already scheduled 4 I-A OOC games).
WIN or LOSE, you do end up helping USM's program and recruiting quite a bit. One of the big down factors of playing at USM for MS HS athletes is that by doing so you don't get to be a part of playing in a big time in-state rival game. I personally would enjoy watching the game itself, but there is no doubt that by having the game at all, it will elevate interest in USM's program from their own fanbase AND the recruits within the state. That's not an issue AT ALL when playing the Tulane, Memphis and UABs of the world. Though the game would be nice, there is no doubt that by playing them (and essentially helping to subsidize their program), State and Ole Miss create problems for themselves because, like it or not, all 3 draw a lot of their talent base from the same well. Yes, USM does get a lot of players from La and South AL right now, but they would SURE take many more of MS's best if only they were able to. Playing State and Ole Miss would give them a much better shot at taking more of those players.
Playing USM is a lose-lose for MState. 8 of their 11 fans show up to the HS stadium they play in, then we fill the rest of it up with our fans. Then they get to take 50% of the gate for OUR fans filling up THEIR stadium? ********. Also, it does nothing for us to expand our influence in the region. If we beat them, we're SUPPOSED to beat them. They're a damn CUSA school. And God forbid we lose to the mfers. All we'd ever hear is how "great" they are and how they "should be part of the SEC." There is no way in hell we should play USM. They're just no incentive or reason to play that **** hole of a school.

if we win big deal but if we lose it will be a meltdown. What do we gain by beating the mustard buzzards instead of say UAB, Memphis or Tulane?
I had heard rumors before Christmas that the Ninja and Giannini had talked about a way to renew the series. Templeton was dead set against it in any way, shape or form. I never posted that here because I didn't want to start up a big stink.
I think we should play once every three or four years, alternating between Starkville and Hattiesburg. It's a low-cost road trip for each team plus it would be entertaining. But that's just my opinion.

I want to understand your line of thinking. It is okay to go to La. Tech (a crappy WAC team), Houston, Memphis or Tulane and lose. But its not okay to play USM in Hattiesburg because "only they have something to gain". We probably should have forfeited the Liberty Bowl last year as well. After all, UCF is a crappy CUSA school and if we would have lost their recruiting would have surely benefited. Lets not forget that we also go to Middle Tenn. St. this year. If I were weighing which away game losses that would hurt the most I definitley would not choose a loss to USM over a loss to La Tech.

I don't have a problem with us playing them but I would rather wait and see if Mullen can get the program turned around before we committ to doing so. Southern fans think they are the "flagship" in the state and I would love to watch us stomp the **** out of them. If we play them and have a decent team I hope Mullen runs the score up.
They won't accept the fact that MSU would be 70% of the ticket sales but they want half the money. They however still basically proclaim we are scared to play them. It all boils down to money.</p>
