Just from observation, there are some things that I really like about Mullen's philosophy:
1. Hold camps, evaluate players in person, redshirt almost everyone, develop players and have 22-23 year olds dominating your roster every year
2. Discipline- players are held accountable (obvious- several suspensions every year - weed, class, etc). But its all relatively quite until gameday and then the game itself and the team performance smothers these issues. I think this works well for injuries too.
3. Playing time- it is held in high regard for those who have followed the rules. I think this keeps a sense of respect about what the team works for during the whole course of the year- you've got to work hard to play- no matter how good you are.
Which brings me to the one thing I do not understand completely-
Why do we insist on playing certain people when better players are on the bench? Malcolm Johnson is a beast. Tubby Lewis (albeit butter fingers) can make plays nobody on our team can make. Dak Prescott needs more goaline opportunities. We've had defensive players that are liabilities see way more time than the 3rd string who is clearly better.
All of this has been said by others, but I think this is all part of Mullen's philosophy- to play players that have built "trust"- or basically been here longer. Overall I like the idea, but sometimes you've gotta put the players out there that makes plays.
Also, I think our secondary would be better if we moved Banks back to safety and Broomfield to corner. Banks can do it all, Broomfield has not transistioned well at safety. Probably too late to try that but just an idea.
