is interesting to me since heoffered Nash Nance and Hutson Mason, both of whom are Tyler Russell types.

And of course he signed Dylan Farve. Farve may have quick feet but I doubt he's much of a tank off tackle.

but ripped off some nice runs and made great reads in their option game. His forty time was only 4.7. I think to much is read into the "speed" of the qb, albeit a Pat White would obviously be more effective. Just sayin.

At this point, he's just trying to get the best QB he can get. If it gets to the point where he can pick and choose more, I think you will see he is going after more "scrambling" type QB.

it's not like WAC linebackers and secondary run 5 flat 40s.

You know good and well that read play has little to nothing to do with speed.

if you're Tim Tebow it doesn't because he's built like a tank.. I guarantee you Alex Smith wouldn't have made it through the year running the same offense as Tebow in the SEC

but to a lot in the Southeast, that really doesn't matter.

For reference though, the MWC is the good one. The WAC is the weaker league.

I still don't see why the best teams from each of those leagues don't get together and form a power MWC/WAC league and leave the others behind. If you put Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, and maybe Hawaii from the WAC with Utah, BYU, TCU, and maybe UNLV or Air Force from the MWC, you could put together a pretty strong 8 or 9 team league that would have a really good argument at getting a BCS spot.

Exactly, a good option offense, especially one with misdirection works because it does the opposite and it neutralizes speed. It's tough to teach guys who are used to playing aggressive chasing defense that they have to stay back, fill a gap, and play assignments. That's why Georgia Tech's offense does so well. It's a different kind of option obviously than the Meyer/Mullen spread option, but it's the same principle and forces defenses to have to sit back rather than attack, which is hard to teach.

Mullen made us look stupid in the Egg Bowl with 1 play because our defense never was able to adjust and get their assignments in order.

The MWC and the WAC schools used to all be in the WAC (16-team league). The good schools got tired of being dragged down by the ****** ones, so the left and formed the MWC.

throw fairly effective (If we can do this) will further open up a defense and create mismatches and holes in the option/run game. This hence is Mullens phylosiphy of making people cover sideline to sideline and down the field. This is not your three yards and a cloud of dust gulf coast crooms offense or run game.

2 words- recovery speed

All defenses will get fooled and miss assignments, but SEC defenses recover quicker from those mistakes than anybody else. 40-50 yards runs vs Air Force are 10-15 yard runs in the SEC

Speed has everything to do with it

and I guess there is a reason why the WAC schools like Boise, Nevada, and Fresno are strong now, and it's possibly because someone has to win those games, but I think they missed on their estimations of who the good schools should be.

The MWC did add TCU after the split from the WAC I believe, and I want to say the WAC used to have SMU. There has been a little bit of shuffling within those leagues lately.

about Mullen offering pro-style guys? Personally, I think it kills the argument that he only wants option QBs.

For the record, I like the option, think we're better off running it.

maybe he sees with Russell here the next 4 years and Relf being the only competent option QB, it may be better for us to go in that direction.

Maybe he wants to have both on hand and continue to play 2 QB's to give defenses more things to prepare for.

His history has been that he prefers an option QB...can that change? Of course

I have confidence in whatever the guy runs...getting our offense to perform like it did last season with what we had is a bigger accomplishment than anything he did at Florida or Utah...but I'm an option guy myself and hope that he stays with that scheme

When the SWC broke up and they got left behind, they joined the new 16-team WAC. Then when they got left behind when the MWC schools left, they played in the new WAC for a couple of years before moving to CUSA. Then when all the good teams left CUSA, they got a chance to join the MWC after all, so they did. 4 conferences in about 15 years for them.

is like saying you want your cake and able to eat it too.

I'm sure the Indy Colts would rather have Vince Young because he's mobile and Peyton isn't, right?

Who the **** DOESN'T want a legit dual threat qb.

You can also do a whole hell of a lot with a qb that is simply an accurate passer.

if the Gulf Coast offense would work anywhere. For example, if you had the All American team run it for a season, I wonder what their record would be.

There are QB's that can run and throw all over college football...don't act like it a rarity

"I'm sure the Indy Colts would rather have Vince Young because he's mobile and Peyton isn't, right?"

Now that was just plain stupid. Pro football and college football are very different. And Peyton isnt asked to QB in a spread-option offense.

"Who the **** DOESN'T want a legit dual threat qb"

a West Coast offense team. They dont want their QB to run, they want him to make snap decisions with throwing the football. Not to mention the time it takes to train a QB in the WCO- getting one hurt because he is a runner can really cripple a football team.

"You can also do a whole hell of a lot with a qb that is simply an accurate passer"

Absolutely. But our offense requires a mobile QB. Has it ever popped up in your mind why Russell, with a more accurate arm, and who is almost assuredly a brighter individual than Relf, is probably not going to win the QB job?

So you tell me, oh bright one, what our offensive coaching staff values more- running or throwing? Because if Relf wins the job, it wont be because he is Joe Montana.

I think it's more because Relf was damn near unstoppable in the Egg Bowl, he's a junior, he has experience, and Russell is a freshman. But hey that makes too much sense and doesn't fit your agenda.

Dude, can't you just stop at praising Mullen? That's something we can all agree on.

at every position, you can run whatever you want. Given that the team would have the same amount of practice time as everyone else in America. You would have to be an incredibly horrible play-caller- as in almost trying to lose- if you had that kind of talent for something to not work.

To me, talent > scheme.

Carl Torbush looked like a genious when he had Julius Peppers at UNC. Joe Lee Dunn was a mastermind with Smoot and Bean and the rest of our defensive players. With Odell Bradley, not so much.

You look at all of the National Champions, and I can guarantee you that they all had some really, really good players. There's a reason why a team like Navy is a minor bowl team every year. They have a sound scheme, they have a good coach, they are very disciplined, but if they go up againt SEC type talent, they are going to get beat most of the time. Despite their talent and scheme, they don't have the overall athletes to compete for a championship. And I know that is maybe an extreme example.

But many of the great West Coast offense QB's in the NFL at least- including Montana, Steve Young, John Elway, Brett Favre were actually fairly mobile. I know that I've heard Bill Walsh say before that he preferred a mobile QB because he could keep the play alive if needed and scramble for yards if needed- which Montana and Young did MANY times with the 49ers, and Montana's mobility is a big reason why he won the job over Steve DeBerg.

Now I will say that I don't think Bill Walsh wanted a Micheal Vick type either, but he also didn't necessarily prefer a straight drop-back passer like a Bernie Kosar either.

you have to be able to throw at a minimum level to be a QB. That level is lower for college. That's why Vick succeeds at one but fails at the other. And Vince Young. There are very few QBs who can pass at an NFL level and run to go with it. McNabb's the only one I can think of right now. Steve Young used to be one.

If you've got a runner and passer of equal ability, you go with the passer 100% of the time in the NFL. In college, you probably go with the passer 90% of the time.

Bottom line, if Russell can really throw the damn ball, he'll play.

Relf can win us 6 maybe 7 games is all. Hard to beat the better teams with his limitations. Ole Miss excepted since the style of defense under Nix is vulnerable since it is such an attacking style. The Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia teams will shut down such a limited offense. The Auburn and Tennessee's as well. What worries me is that 7 wins might get Mullen a better job so he goes with the safe, but more limited option. We might be better off down the road by risk taking a few lumps early with the higher upside Russell.

Unless he has drastically improved, over the course of a normal game, he can't keep the chains moving if the other team forces him to pass. He throws a good deep ball but very rarely do you complete those throws on a SEC team. Relf blew up against UM but he did ok against the other teams. Most of the time he was a good change of pace since the other defense was just teeing off on Tyson Lee. We bring in Relf and the defense has to change their mentality. If Relf has developed accuracy for the normal throws, he could be very dangerous.

there has been 1 guy that was an effective runner

And are you absolutely sure Walsh wanted him to do as much running as he did?

I do think that after all this time of having the WAC/MWC split, it has allowed a handful of teams from each league to build their programs separately by being the big fish in the smaller ponds, and I think if they could merge all the big fish from the two ponds, they could make a really good conference. It may actually be better if the MWC were to just steal 3 teams from the WAC (Boise, Fresno, Nevada likely) and expand to a 12 team league, rather than trying to form an 8 team league with the best of the best. That way you'd still have the conference bottom feeders to boost the records of the top schools in the league. You almost need the bottom feeders for the top programs to be able to survive and continue to grow. Someone has to finish last.

There's a lot of talk going on out west about both PAC-10 and MWC expansion. I think we'll see Utah and maybe Colorado go to the PAC 10. Candidates for MWCexpantion include Boise, Fresno, Nevada, Houston and Tulsa.</p>

Well, that depends on what you want your QB to do. Barry Switzer had Troy Aikman and Jamelle Holieway at OU in the 80's. One could run the option and one couldn't. One transferred to UCLA and one QB'd the Sooners to an NC. Care to guess who did what?

If Mullen wantsus to be a run first option team, then Relf willQB.
