Mullen's success in 2010 will depend on keeping Assist. Coaches now

I started following MSU football in the Felker years. It seemed everytime he got a good staff in place some other school would come and pluck them away. Now this was not the only reason for Felker's demise but it might have played a role.

Then, Sherrill got some pretty good to great coaches hired. Then when we started winning, they were lured away to the bigger programs. Sherill never was able to retain any coaches for too long during his what 13 years as our coach?

Even the idiot-go-cart-driver Crxxm, somehow got Ellis Johnson, the RB coach from GB and Brick Haley from GaTech hired. All of these guys turned around and headed to other programs after a few years (in Crxxms case they saw his ineptitude and the writing on the wall).

Now, we have the potentially best HC since Sherrill. Its imperative Mullen be able to keep guys like Balis, Hevesy, Hudspeth, Turner, Knox. We could be set to make some noise in the next few years but judging from past history, we have got to keep our coaching staff intact, using consistent schemes, terminology, etc. On the flip side, other guys like Torbush, Smith, Koenning...I guess the jury is still out on them.

Just look at teams like TCU and Boise (i know they're not SEC) and VT. These teams keep the same HC and Assistant coaching staffs intact and seem to build and get better every year over the long haul.

I just think Mullen's future success will be determined by recruiting. Even in the short term.

Keeping the staff together is important, but not as important as recruiting.

That is something that never happened under Croom. Even the best teams lose coaches to other teams. Bama lost their D coordinator to I think Clemson after last year and also lost a coach to UT. This goes for basketball tool

they took a step back on offense this year without Mullen and likely will take a step back on defense next year without Strong.

UF will take a step back because they are likely losing a lot of players from that Defense. Strong nearly got fired 3 years ago his defense was so bad. But then all those 5 star DB's became juniors and all of the sudden his 3-3-5 starting looking like JLD's defense with Smoot and Bean.

USC has lost about 20 assistants the last few years and up until this season, they just keep on winning. It's nice to keeep good coaches on the staff, but games are won the first Wednesday in February.

1) You can only keep your players four years.
2) You can openly pay your coaches.
3) If your assistant breaks his leg early in the season, it's not going to have a huge impact on the W-L record.

Meyer has had the benefit of having several guys stick with him over a long period (Mullen) or inheriting good assistants (Strong). Who he gets to replace Mullen and Strong has more impact than who replaces Tebow.

Not potentially. There has only been 1 other who's name need not be stated.

Based onlast year, I agree Balis and Hevesey are the most crucial to keep.

and then get others to do the same. That's the single best thing EACH OF US can do. Well, other than complain on a message board and do nothing.

The point was for him to stay here 4 years was a miracle in itself. I also forgot Shane Beamer if it really matters.

can actually make things happen as evidenced by numerous events which at this point are obviously not coincidence.

That whole BC thing is a pretty good idea too.</p>
