Goodness. I honestly do hate to see it just because I thought so much better of him when he was on our team before he left.

It’s not that it’s shocking behavior anymore (sadly), but I wouldn’t have picked him for it at the time.

I’m surprised Auburn accepted an NIT bid. Unlike some woman’s team I’m vaguely aware of.
No kidding. It’s really hard for me to have any sort of negative opinion or response to any player who chooses to not participate in the NIT. It just doesn’t matter.

The line at the end was funny, and full of butthurt. “Did not communicate the decision to the staff beforehand”. Pretty sure the not showing up to practice part was a pretty clear communication. And it was still “beforehand” when the tweet was posted and somehow they knew he wasn’t playing.

Well, I'm sure they knew he wasn't playing because missing practice without letting anyone know means he was kicked off or not going to be allowed to play.

I'd be pretty butthurt if my player did that, personally. At least let me know the decision (even though I think it's BS the player can decide to sit playoffs out (but I'm with you- I'm also tired of all of these expanded playoff tourneys to let everyone get to play. They're all just for revenue.)

Where I’m at with it - Selection Sunday was literally the evening before the missed practice on Monday. NIT field wasn’t set until later that evening after the NCAA field was done. Auburn didn’t know if / when they’d be practicing and playing until late Sunday evening.

Whether he sent the coaching staff a text or call at 9 or 10 PM on Sunday night to say that he was done (as opposed to just not showing up to NIT practice less than 4-5 waking hours away) just isn’t super relevant to me….especially compared to all the other nonstop BS that’s going on elsewhere with NIL, the portal, etc. And if the coaching staff’s view of “beforehand” is that he didn’t tell them at any point in the season he would not play anymore if they didn’t make the NCAA’s, then that’s a pretty dumb expectation on their end.

Overall point - that final statement reeks of something that was shoehorned in there by the coaching staff to make Murphy look selfish, look like a head case, etc. and try to distract from their own total incompetence in derailing the momentum of Auburn’s program.

Or, knowing you’re on the bubble but probably not making it, let them know then you don’t intend to play in the NIT and thank them for their investment. At the very least.

I hope he puts it all together one day, but there has been absolutely nothing that Murphy has done or said during the last 4 years to make me think… man, this kid is going places

He’s got talent, but I think he tried to quit our team at least twice before actually leaving, and it’s obvious that he has had some absolute idiots in his ear since high school. I’m afraid we all know how this story is gonna end because we see it all the time

He was a bum when he was here and he was a bum at Auburn… an athletic bum.. bust still a bum.

The European leagues will eat him alive.

At Auburn, he had a season-long BPM of +9.1. How good is that? Well, if it happened at MSU, it would be the highest BPM of any player in our history since that stat started being recorded for college players in 2010 or so. And it would be the highest by a landslide….the current record for single season BPM at MSU is Q. Weatherspoon’s +8.1 in 2018-2019.

Sometimes a headcase? Maybe.

A bit selfish? Sure.

But, Auburn was much better for having him. And we were much, much worse for losing him.

Murphy wasn't the only one who skipped this NIT game. 85 game sellout streak snapped at Auburn. 2,100 fans showed up. The end of an era.
