AAU coaching vs. big time college coaching .... two different things. Liked Penny as a player, but he needed to have actually been an assistant somewhere before stepping into the big time. Just cause you can play, doesn't mean you can coach.

Memphis thought they could just bring in a recruiter and problem was solved. It doesn't work that way at this level.

I don't know all the details.. but Mike Miller didn't last too long on his staff either. A friend who played for Memphis I think told me it was mostly Mike Miller who was the real brains behind the operation. And he left to go be a HS coach?

Anyways, this could get ugly and fast. I know think it's only a matter of time before one of his higher recruits bails.

It’s no surprise at this point. Before the season it would have been. memphis is infinitely more talented and had way higher expectations than murray. but penny sucks

A lot of Memphis fans are getting tired of drinking the koolaide Penny is serving, and are ready to move on. Guess the Memphis team is still afraid of the Smoke (of playing, not good smoke)

With who they had coming back and coming in, Duren made a lot of sense for their team. Bates made no sense. Lomax, Quinones, Nolley, Williams, and Duran is actually a solid starting lineup. Bates kind of complicates everything so he has to be overwhelmingly good to be worth messing up chemistry. Similar to the Cockburn situation for us really, although he is much more established.
