Currently bingeing the band Indigenous. They've been around for quite some time. A really solid Blues-Rock band made up of members of the Nakota tribe out of South Dakota, lead by singer/guitarist Mato Nanji.

I was lucky enough to see Brian Auger four (4) times ... twice in Louisville and twice in Lexington. They were easily some of the best musical experiences of my lifetime !! He creates tremendous energy on the keyboards in his uptempo tunes ... !!!

Been listening to Jethro Tull this week. Who would have ever thought to have a classic rock band frontman play the flute? Ian Anderson did it. And he was entirely self-taught on that instrument. Between that and the crazy medieval costumes, often wearing a codpiece, they were quite a spectacle. They were the first band I ever saw live. That was back in 1976.

The fact that they are not in the Rock HOF leaves me scratching my head.

Very nice, WildCatFan !! Fabulously talented and highly engaging band that I've seen and always enjoyed. Here are a couple of videos that I've always really enjoyed, especially my favorite ... "Life's a Long Song" ... performed as a chamber tune in Ian's home, with his son on the drums. I particularly enjoy the flute solo and the expression of joy on the celloist's face ... she really felt it !! Also, please note that the FABULOUS version of "Jeffrey's Song" in the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus (1968) includes Tony Iommi on guitar. He was asked to join the band and he gave it a go for about a month.
It wasn't for him, but the experience made him a more focused musician and Black Sabbath became a much better band, as a result.

Okay ... here is something new I stumbled on last night: Tom A. Smith, a 22 year-old Brit with a good band and a refreshing, yet somewhat familiar, sound. I hear bits of David Bowie, David Byrne, Mick Jagger, Robert Palmer, Iggy Pop, Kinks, LCD Soundsystem, INXS, etc. in his music, but he has his own unique style. I am over 50 years older than he is, but if they tour USA and come around, I will DEFINITELY go see them ... no question !!

I saw LCD Soundsystem with Arcade Fire at Waterfront Park in Louisville many years ago. James Murphy is a pretty cool dude ... he is a great live performer. I relate to what he says ...

I recently discovered this artist, too. I’m a big fan.

If I ever see Smith and band touring the States, I will post here. Maybe he'll come close enough to catch a show. I saw where he was well-received at SXSW in Austin ... no surprise.

In case you are not familiar, High Fade is another interesting, refreshing and talented band ... they are from Scotland. They are starting a U.S. tour next week ... if you like their sound and vibe. They are a band that is best heard live !!

They sound like Aerosmith to my ears.

95% of their music is instrumental. They are new and got their start busking in Scotland. High-energy, almost progressive, funk-disco jamming is their vibe. They remind me of HIGH-SOEED Vulfpeck, featuring Cory Wong and Joe Dart.

I may be mistaken but I thought the R&R Circus version was pre-recorded and didn't actually feature Iommi playing guitar on the recording.
Either way it (and the performance from the Who) is probably the standout from that show.

Thanks for the interest and your reply got me to thinking and to research. I believe it was recorded live before a small, invited audience ...

Thoughts?

My first time actually listening to this band after seeing them get a whole bunch of hype the past several weeks. I can grant that they’re talented on their instruments at a technical level, but it doesn’t really come together into anything I particularly want to listen to, at least in this song. I’m sure a lot of people would think say something similar about some of the more extreme metal I listen to though, so I’m certainly not offended if someone else likes them.

Today’s binge is the supergroup, Black Country Communion.

Glenn Hughes - bass and vocals. Played in about a dozen different bands through the years, including a stint in Deep Purple, and for a brief time in Black Sabbath. I’m amazed at how well his voice has held up even as he’s now in his 70s.

Joe Bonamassa - lead guitar. Arguably the most talented guitarist alive today.

Jason Bonham - drums. Son of the late great Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

Derek Sherinian - keyboards. Started with the band, Dream Theater. Has recorded with dozens of top level artists through the years.

Incredible band.
Glenn's output in the last 25 years or so has been honestly inspiring. Between BCC, his solo material, and the collaborations with Tony Iommi, he's been putting out his best work while most singers his age peaked decades ago.

I got into this young Welshman about 3 years ago. The guy suffered for years with misdiagnosed Lyme disease and then had some problems with psychosis. He's very good on guitar and keyboards and he sings with a wide range and is a great rapper in different styles.
This song isn't so much a song as a theatrical performance.

Mark King is a fabulous musician who can sing, chew gum (ala John Lennon) and slap the plank with the best of them !!
Here is a live clip from the town square in Lugano, Switzerland (July 2010) that is very nicely done:

Here is the original ... you'll remember it from the old MTV days !!

King helped to develop and popularize the slap and pop style of playing the bass guitar in the 1980s. The slapping and popping style was developed in the 1970s by funk bassists such as Larry Graham and further developed by jazz fusion bassists such as Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. King developed a rapid playing speed using this technique, and introduced technical elements that enabled him to produce a mix of percussive effects while still playing a bassline.
One of King's greatest influences was the musician Tom Taylor, who gave King guitar lessons when King was 12.
King's bass-playing style is largely based on continuous sixteenth notes (aka semiquavers), sometimes described as "machine-gun" style. This "machine-gun" style consists of playing rapidly using a combination of thumb slaps, pops, hammer-ons, and fretting hand slaps.

Here is King on stage with an idol of his: Larry Graham, along with Prince and Santana ... King comes on at 31:25 Mark ... pretty good stuff !!

I have some catching up to do this weekend, some good stuff posted here.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was a just a force of nature. Pick anything to watch, it's all amazing. I was working on a survey crew between Future City and Kevil when I heard on the radio that his helicopter went down. What a bummer.
