Looking at the stats, ASU was 1-10 on third downs, so maybe not awesome there. However, they averaged 9.7 yards per rush v NAU, so stack the box and make their QB beat us. Thats what I see when looking at the stats from that perspective.

The receivers were better than I thought they would be. That being said, the offense needs to make a light speed jump to be ready to compete with ASU. The defense gives me hope, but ASU has another bowling ball style runner. Man up!!

It was such a typical opening game for the dogs. We were obviously physically superior with too many mistakes. We start off with a bang then mistakes cause us to drag for a bit. We then put together a few scores because our superior size, speed and strength has tired out the opponent. This is all followed by another doldrum as we are up by enough the game is ours but we don't seem to want to rub it in.

Really? It was more the USM DBs were really really bad. Our receivers were very average & will struggle vs SEC secondaries.

You could make a case we looked better at every position.

Maybe OL in the first half, but I thought they played better in the second half without Steen.

Hutzler gonna throw that 3 man front at them.
To base out of three man front is fine, but you need to walk down LBers every now and then to show a 4 and 5 man front. Arnett based out of a 3-3-5, but most of the time we had a backer walked down for a 4 man front look.

I think the jury is still out on our receivers. The ASU game will reveal what we have. I'm afraid the OL will be the biggest problem for our passing game. I would practice QB roll out this week to be ready.

Specifically, we tackled much better than we did last year.

Southern Miss had 301 yards of offense, and they tacked on about 125 of them in their two garbage fourth quarter drives.

The offensive line can clean up the penalties.

This week is the biggest non-conference game at DWS in a while. We can beat ASU. They will be #8 or 9 coming in. 4 pack lower level for $150 with a parking pass. Let's sell the place out.

We will probably need a hug from Hope after next week. But who knows……

Obviously the two biggest issues we saw yesterday were OL play in the first half and penalties (also primarily on the OL). My biggest want, better coaching. The play on the OL came down to coaching and the play calls we saw coming in were total drive killers on several possessions. Having clear success in the run game and then immediately deciding to go away from that left me scratching my head. All the pre-snap theatrics made no sense to a simpleton like me, but appeared to also make no sense to our OL (which couldn't seem to figure out how to line up with men in motion).

I get it, you need to extend the offense and see how the team responds, but can't we do that after we've built a comfortable lead? It was clear USM came out fired up, but started to fade early in the 2nd quarter. We started to lean on them in the run game and then totally abandoned it. Several penalties and drive killers later, we gave them life. The coaching on the offensive side of the ball has to be better. That's discouraging considering Lebby was brought here to be our offensive savior. His offense has looked a total mess 13 games in.

That’s all we had to do last year too, but for some reason Hutzler didn’t realize they were going to hand it off to Skattebo 3 out of 4 plays. That was the most frustrating part of last year’s game. Everybody watching except our DC knew what was coming.

They looked like a football team. Last year's team would have loss yesterday. They still have a lot of improvement needed. Arizona State did not run North Arizona out of the stadium. There is some hope.

He has helped this season from two guys who could easily replace him.

I have some hope from yesterday. Our backs looked good. Our offense was very jittery. I won't even touch on the atrocious penalties. The offensive line looked like crap. The only place to go is forward.

We had some of the first game blues.
Both defenses made mistakes, but they were ahead of the offense, as they should be at this time of year. My only hope is that we were keeping things so vanilla that we cannot get a good read on our team.

It was the first game of the year, we were expected to win the game, and we won. There were some errors with penalties, but overall looked really good against a lower conference team. Things looked positive, and it was a good "scrimmage" game to get ready for the season.

Stacking the box SHOULD have been our strategy last season. Most likely would have won comfortably. That was a disgusting loss and it was on the coaching staff.

Hope is not a plan..therefore I plan to lose by a large margin. Lebby is in over his head and Hutzler will keep a 3 man front and play zone. Anyone who says anything else should have a week long ban from the board. You all know by now that positive vibes wake the Injuns under Scott Field

All I saw from this game was penalties killing scoring opportunities.
I think I counted two of our touchdowns that were called back due to penalties.

I think I saw one of theirs. I was unsure if it was a score or not, but it was not reviewed.

I think ASU is the better team, but we have some athletes that can compete. Kelly Jones is a freak & we have a couple more on D that are very gifted athletes.

State has a few players with attributes you can't coach or teach & sometimes those abilities can take over a game. We also showed absolutely nothing on the defensive side & our LBs are very active & SEC caliber.

My concern is, can our OL hold up against their DL & will Shapen spot open WRs? He holds the ball too long & if he plays like that against ASU, they'll make him pay. Fix that & the penalties, we'll have a chance.

DW will be rocking.

I'm scared stiff of our DC. ASU had 10.3 yards per carry and 9.7 yards per reception. Hutzler better not get out coached...aGain.

Defense was more than serviceable against a Sunbelt team. That's a plus. Our offensive line scares the **** out of me. Very poor run blocking and we are going to bleed through QBs running for their lives when we see some legit P4 talent.

Too many penalties.

offensive line is a mess.

defense struggled getting off the field on third down.

I want to believe but I saw nothing yesterday that gives me hope against Arizona State.

Whatever was said in the locker room at halftime needs to be said pregame, but the fact that they were able to make adjustments and right the ship for the second half gives me hope.
No one ever talks about the flip side of that coin - maybe Huff said the wrong thing at halftime.

I know, debbie downer. But I'm entitled.
