1 in Hollandale and 1 in Rolling Fork. He was meeting with the Corps of Engineers today as they are discussing blowing some dams where the Big Sunflower and Yazoo confluence occurs. It is possible that IF they blow, Hollandale can get water in downtown. IF they do not blow, Rolling Fork could get water backed up in that creek/bayou that runs next to downtown and thus into downtown streets and possibly businesses.

What I got told today in making some calls is that if the river gets to 57.5 at Vicksburg then the backflow into the yazoo will overrun the levees. The levees along the yazoo are an average of 26'. Some spots obviously lower, factor in the fact that they are made of dirt and have probably settled even lower than that and that as water flows over the levees they will erode also. Water could flow over the levees for longer than the predicted week.
I guess the closest comparable flood to this would be the 73 flood. That crested at 102 feet. In that floodfarmers, well my dad whose land is 100' was not able to plant till 4th of July. Farmers further south were not able to plant anything till August (and were just trying to salvage something). It took that long for the water to drain and that was 6' less of water.
Also today I got told that Herrin.. or whoever provides the gas for the Rolling Fork area gas stations are starting to pump out all the gas in the gas stations in the south delta. This was told to me by the owner of a gas station inRolling Fork. He is packing up his store this weekend and getting everything out of it and in storage in higher ground.
I also got told that hughway 61 will be closed by Saturday at Redwood. Have no idea if that is going to be true or not.</div></div>
And all of this is only if there is not any more than average rain for the next 2-3 weeks.

You have a combination of water coming down the Yazoo with nowhere to go and the extremely high Mississippi River pushing water back in. It has nowhere to go but out into the Delta.

so religiously in the south delta(Onward and Delta National area)is really going to be impacted. Many deer will migrate to isolated "high spots" but they won`t be high enough and a lot of animals will be lost. I guess it`s just part of nature`s plan although it`s hard to watch sometime.
It works out though. The deer population in the hills and on the Big Black was just about nil before 1973. Mother knows best.

but this certainly should not help. I deer hunt in the hills above the Delta and you arecorrect, the 1973 flood changed deer hunting in Miss. and made it what it is today all over the state to some extent. I expect the deer hunting in the hills to really get a bounce off this and unfortunately the folks that are working their tail off fighting that Miss. River every year and paying high dollar for their leases may feel like it is time to head to the hills. It really is great hunting on the river but the money and the work isn't worth it to me at this point in my life and it will probably take several years for those river clubs to recoverfrom this hit.
Seems like half of Roling Fork is on this board! Lol. I actually own land outside of Rolling Fork/Cary.

They just were on the Gallo Show on Supertalk and said that there will be no major impact on deer or bears. The deer will leave and go to the nearest high spot but will return soon as the water goes down. He said that the bears will just climb a tree and hang out.It will however affect turkeys. To what extent, he wasn't sure.
but there will be a near term impact and some animals won`t make it. It happened in 1973 (I witnessed it with my own eyes) and it happened in every major flood prior to that butthe animalsalways come back and will this time.
Hell if the land was high enough that it wouldn`t flood we would have already screwed it up for the wildlife. I guess I`m saying thank God for making it that way.

but it will have a negative impact for several years I believe. It really depends on how long the deer are displaced and whether they have their fawns in the displaced areas which will in some cases lead them to stay in those locations instead of returning, I can't give you a link but this is what I have heard.

The MS River Crest Forecast has NOT changed. However, the
crest dates have been shifted. Crest stages remain the same as the
following May 2 projections: 57.5’ at Vicksburg on 5/20/11, 64.5’ at
Greenville on 5/17/11, 53.5’ at Arkansas City on 5/16/11, 56’ at Helena
on 5/12/11, and 48’ at Memphis on 5/11/11. The MS River stages are
currently 46.76’ at Vicksburg, 54.65’ at Greenville, 43.71’ at Arkansas
City, 51.66’ at Helena, and 44.13’ at Memphis; all of which are above
flood stage.</p>

At this projected stage, the Yazoo River Backwater Levee will
be overtopped by 1.3’ in some areas. The MS Levee Board is in the
process of hardening portions of the levee projected to overtop to
provide added strength in these stressed areas. The overflow is
projected to add an additional 0.5’ of water to the Yazoo River

Backwater Levee were to occur, the Area could see water elevations of

unprotected by Yazoo River levees such as Bee Lake, Tchula Lake, and

The MS River Crest Forecast has NOT changed. However, the
crest dates have been shifted. Crest stages remain the same as the
following May 2 projections: 57.5’ at Vicksburg on 5/20/11, 64.5’ at
Greenville on 5/17/11, 53.5’ at Arkansas City on 5/16/11, 56’ at Helena
on 5/12/11, and 48’ at Memphis on 5/11/11. The MS River stages are
currently 46.76’ at Vicksburg, 54.65’ at Greenville, 43.71’ at Arkansas
City, 51.66’ at Helena, and 44.13’ at Memphis; all of which are above
flood stage.</p>

At this projected stage, the Yazoo River Backwater Levee will
be overtopped by 1.3’ in some areas. The MS Levee Board is in the
process of hardening portions of the levee projected to overtop to
provide added strength in these stressed areas. The overflow is
projected to add an additional 0.5’ of water to the Yazoo River

As someone already stated, Delta Council is a pretty good source of information, as well as the Facebook page for the Yazoo Backwater Flood Updates (never thought I'd say look to a Facebook page for info, but they are putting up the right stuff). You want your info to come from Peter Nimrod, because he's out there everyday, and, well, he's the head guy.
Let's just hope it all works out for the best. I was up on the levee yesterday in G'ville- Yacht Club is over halfway under water. They have sandbags ready at the base of the Central Ave. levee, but Peter doesn't think we're going to need them. Hopefully not. Don't need anybody messing with it, either.
People are ordered not to be on the levee after midnight Saturday; those that violate that ruling will be arrested, no exceptions. I doubt anyone that reads this forum needs to read this, but I figured I'd put it anyway.
