Speaking of articles on RU wrestling, someone forwarded me this from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:
An emerging power
Fans from all over the country traveled in droves to back their schools, with national powerhouses Iowa and Oklahoma State bringing two of the strongest contingents as always. But if any other team and fan base owned the weekend other than Penn State, it had to be Rutgers and its rabid group of supporters.
The Scarlet Knights’ wrestling program went without a national finalist for its first 86 years until Nick Suriano made the finals last year. This year, Suriano and teammate Anthony Ashnault both made it, and both delivered for their fans to become the school’s first-ever national champion wrestlers.
The Rutgers section, one of the loudest fan sections all weekend, nearly blew the roof off the building when Suriano took down Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix in double overtime in the 133-pound finals.
Chris Saul, 50, of Leesburg, Va., made the trip to support his father’s alma mater and watch Suriano and Ashnault make history.
“I grew up in Pennsylvania, but obviously with my father going to Rutgers, I’m a big supporter. All the fans are fantastic,” Saul said. “I think what they’ve done is built the program enough where the best kids are going to want to go to Rutgers.”
