He only puts it out on certain days, so i started to get curious if he was doing it on days that were significant to the Confederacy, and it turns out he was.

He's flying it today, so I looked it up. March 27 was the day Lincoln, Grant, and Sherman met in Virginia to plan the final assault that would finish off the traitors.

So I opened up the windows in my house and I'm blasting Union victory songs at full volume all day.

That's OK. It's still a free country. I fly a Canadian flag 🇨🇦 most days in support of my friends from the Great White North, and JinxyPat flies his Trans flag 🏳‍⚧️ every day, so it's all good.

I agree. He's free to fly whatever flag he wants, just as I'm free to respond however I want. It's a great country.

hah! what a LOSER. Its always hilarious that people cite the confederate flag with heritage. The confederacy was around for what, 4 years? Also, thats a battle flag not a nation flag.

Yeah, if people got a little less worked up about fighting symbolic fights we’d all be a little better off.

here in big lex, in February, we have a weekend where on Saturday, the scv parades down Main Street and deposits lemons at Jackson’s grave for “Lee-Jackson” commemorations. Then on Monday, another crowd parades down Main Street for mlk commemorations. Each has their subset of weirdos if you ask me, but Nobody gets hurt and then Monday comes.

By contrast, The only time here where someone did get metaphorically “hurt” was when the proprietor of the red hen decided to be rude and boot a customer whose politics she didn’t like because her staff felt “threatened” by said politics. And the red hen is no more.

That's awful. Lee-Jackson day was actually a state holiday up until 2020. Yikes. And your town still celebrates even after the state reversed its stance on celebrating treason and slavery? The most insane thing was, at some point, Virginia combined MLK Jr. day, with Lee-Jackson day.

Parts of this nation are SO incredibly backward and misguided, it's hard to fathom.

Whenever I start to grow weary of the DEI-related pushes because I don't live in an environment where that kind of thing is (at least, outwardly) as much of an issue, things like this remind me why it still may be necessary.

Double A: IMHO, the Commonwealth of Virginia occupies a somewhat unique position when it comes to issues like the Stars and Bars, Robert E. Lee, and Confederacy stuff. It's right on the North-South boundary, and the history there is a bit muddled, as you noted in your post. I could live with that, as long as there is a bit of tolerance on both sides. (Although I gotta say that I would have to swallow hard and repeat the words "First Amendment" to myself if my neighbor started flying a Confederate flag.)

BTW, do you think that Virginia voters are gonna approve that redistricting measure come April 21? It seems to frequently be portrayed as the next event for measuring voters' opinions, and is starting to get pretty wide play out here on the Left Coast. I think this is particularly the case given that Virginia might fairly be described as a purple state.

Precisely. And particularly in Lexington where both of them basically had critical roles in the key institutions in town. I also tend to think Lee is a little more complicated story too in that his post civil war life had some positive upside. As to flag flyers, people are people. Most of the flag flyers wave to me when I’m on my bike in the mountains.

re 4/21 I think it will be extremely close but will fail. I go up to nova every week and I just don’t sense the passion behind it, and there are also people up there who will lose access to Don beyer as their rep. A longer story, but this is a third rail issue for me. For the first time in my life, I will not vote for mark warner this fall, solely because of his support of this. Otherwise I think he’s an exceptional senator.

if it does pass, I won’t be surprised either, but then it’ll just be floridas turn. Round and round we go. Separately, I also think there’s a really big sleeper issue out there in Louisiana v callais which could end up taking the handcuffs off the southern states.

finally, regardless of all of this, I think r’s are going to get waxed this fall.

I've mentioned it numerous times, it's not some secret. I'm not SNAP poor, thankfully. I don't have anything against people who are, though.
Neither do I. I have helped people all my life when I got to the point I could help them.

Can you agree that there are people that abuse these programs?

😅😅 have I ever suggested otherwise?

I'm not sure why we're discussing snap benefits in this thread, though.

Trump has got to find a way to get out of this Iran debacle as quickly as possible. More American troops were injured (some seriously) today in an Iranian bombing of a military base in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, we have massed something like 10,000 soldiers over there. To do what?!! Take Kharg Island?! The soldiers there will then be a rather convenient target for Iranian missiles. This war could end up dragging Trump down like the ongoing Vietnam War did to LBJ.

If the reports that we have destroyed only one-third of Iran's missiles are true, then Trump has a real problem on his hands. We can't just walk away and leave Iran in possession of all those missiles. They'll launch them at Israel and, more importantly, at our bases throughout the Middle East, on an even more furious basis (and with little hindrance) if we leave., If we stay, we risk losing more soldiers, and depleting our own supply of missiles. I read today that the cost of a Tomahawk missile is $1 million. I had previously heard it was $500,000. Either way, it is a lot.

FWIW took a peek at early voting by county this am. Sort of interesting. Turnout % relatively low in nova and sw, fairly high in tidewater (not sure I get that), and medium in central/shenandoah. Most in 10-15% range, which I gather is higher than most early voting %s at a comparable point.

He just mentioned that he's not that poor ... that wasn't an invitation to turn SNAP program abuse into a discussion topic here, especially when it's being talked to death elsewhere. Regardless, every program ... public, private ... has some some level of abuse/corruption/inefficiency ... we don't just shut the world down and say we can't go on ... we work to fix it like adults, not demonize the entirety of them, and their recipients. It's time MAGAs grow up. You had your trolling fun, now it's time to be big boys and girls.

I've been flying the LGBTQ+ flag on front of my house for about a year now.
You want someone to thank you for being a ******? You are trying too hard. You want everyone to celebrate you being *****.

This has always been the problem with you ******. It's not enough that we live, and let live.

Nobody cares how many ***** you choke on. We don't care.

The problem is you want all of America to condone it. That's not going to happen.

Last night, for the first time in a long time (actually, the only time since I've been here), you actually made a post that made me think you weren't sub-human. It didn't have any asterisked out curse words, and it was actually written in English.

Then, today, you've been back to the sub-human POS you've always been, saying nothing, but being hateful and just cursing like you are a child trying too hard to act cool, or like you have Tourettes.

What happened? Are you typically drunk and angry when you post (like today), and that one post last night, you had a moment of sobriety?

Does this mean you're going to continue being an angry drunk, cursing like a little kid trying to act cool, and slinging all sorts of homophobic insults, letting everyone know you're insecure in your sexuality and masculinity?
