To me as a player and a coach there is no better feeling than practicing on Thanksgiving. Just something about football and Thanksgiving that go together. The predictions below are my opinion only. I very well could get all of them right or wrong. Lol. Good luck to all 8 teams remaining as each team is very good and deserving of being here.

#1A East

#1 Sussex vs. #5 Altavista
The Sussex defense was on point last Friday as their starters didn't allow Luray to score while the offense was able to score at will. The Colonels meanwhile won 42-10 over Lunenburg in a game many thought would be closer. One thing the Colonels can't afford to have this week is the 130 yards of penalties they had last week. The defense though played very well in limiting Lunenburg to 143 total yards. Now they have to get ready for the veer of Sussex that when it's hitting on all cylinders is tough to stop. The Sussex defense themselves will be challenged by the dual threat of Jake Adams at quarterback along with the dangerous Mateo Maulbeck at wide receiver and Jonathan Montague at running back.
Prediction: Defense does indeed win championships and I believe Sussex has a championship defense but the offense hasn't always put up big numbers against quality opponents. The Altavista defense while not as good as Sussex is still very good. The Altavista offense though I think is better than the Sussex offense and will do just enough to win. This isn't the Altavista team of years past but a good team nonetheless.
Altavista 18
Sussex 12

#1 Riverheads vs #3 Colonial Beach

The Gladiators steamrolled Essex on Friday behind a swarming defense and a methodical offense. Now they get to play Essex district mate Colonial Beach. The Drifters come in as winners of 8 in a row and while not big are a scrappy bunch out of their single wing offense. They will need Lamar Lucas to come up big but he can't do it by himself. Alonzo Turner will have to help him out with his legs as well as his arm.
Prediction: While Riverheads is used to these type of games it's been a long time since the Drifters have had a game of this magnitude. Colonial Beach is full of heart and won't back down but in the end the powerful Gladiator offense behind Schaeffer will wear them down
Riverheads 28
Colonial Beach 12

1A West:

#1 Galax vs #4 Fort Chiswell

The Maroon Tide are the higher seed but the Pioneers were the victors 33-21 when they played in the regular season. Some are predicting another Pioneer upset but to me if it happened it'd only be an upset based on seeding. The Pioneers will look to get the ball in Colby Riders hands anyway possible and control the clock in the process. You can bet Galax will get the ball into the hands of Dougie Peoples as much as possible but don't forget about Blake Brown either.
Prediction:
They always say it is hard to beat a good team twice in the same season. That becomes even tougher when that team is the defending state champs. Galax may have overlooked FC the first time but Coach Mark Dixon will make sure it won't happen again.
Galax 35
FC 7

#2 George Wythe vs. #6 Parry McCluer
What a great game this is shaping up to be. Both teams have passionate fan bases as judged by just the posters on here. But the game itself will be won on the field and not on a message board. GW will try and spread the wealth behind Moss, Owens, Horton among others in the backfield but it could be the play of quarterback Deacon Beamer that could be the difference. He will have to make some plays early to back the Blues up and open up the run game. It is no secret what PM wants to do. Behind Nelson, Cook and Dawson they want to pound the ball down the Maroons throat. Nelson needs around 200 yards to become the all time VHSL leader in rushing yards but a win would obviously be more important.
Prediction: A game I went back and forth on multiple times. It truly is that close between these two teams in my opinion. In the end I think PM plays keep away behind their stellar backfield and in the end linebacker Eli Wheeler makes a huge play on defense to seal it for the Blues.

Have you actually seen any of the teams left play outside of Sussex? I have no problem with anyone having their own opinion or a good debate but you should actually see the other teams play first instead of just going by what you read on a message board or a newspaper. Since I've asked you this question before and you've never answered me I assume you haven't. Until you actually see Altavista or PM or anyone else then you can't give a fair assessment.

Well someone else will make that key defensive stop. Wheeler is a really good player and a throwback type and only a sophomore. Thanks for the info on him.

Sorry to hear a good player go down, but I don't think him playing would have made a big difference in this game. Even with him in the game, GW by 2 scores.

Why would it matter?
It matters as far as game planning as he is one of their key players on defense. Personally I don't like when people post about other kids injuries on here. Last week someone posted about the injury to Essex player Tim Johnson on here. I tried to downplay it until multiple people posted he had a broken collarbone. I already knew that but didn't want it to get leaked. Would it have made a difference in the game on Friday? Probably not. But that is beside the point. Just my two cents for what it's worth in regards to reporting injuries on here.

Your post started out good and then I got to the 35-7 score of the Galax, Fort game. So your saying that Galax wasn't prepared to play FC the first game. I beg to differ, kind sir. This is a Dixon coached team, when have they ever over looked any team? It's going to be hard to beat any team here on out, regardless if it's the 1st time or not. Galax is good and Fort will have to earn it, just like the first game. "How bout them Pioneers".

I knew there was talent on that team when we played y'all. Like I said in another post you have to find were those kids will shine the brightest. Looks like the staff has figured it out to.
Fort89,
In your opinion what were the key changes made on the pioneers to turn things around?

If your predictions were to come true, that would mean a Parry McCluer at Riverheads semi-final, and that would be HUGE for this area. For those of you who might not know, they are only about 30 miles apart and once played each other regularly. It only stands to reason that there will be at least one upset, as opposed to the 1s and 2s winning all four games. Of your upset picks, needless to say I like the Altavista one the most!

We became a run first team, basically the same kids as last year. The coaches have learned a lot as well as the kids. Give credit where it's due. In my opinion this was it for them if they didn't win. To go from 0-10 to this, you have to give as much credit to the coaches as you do the kids. We have a stud in #7 but without a great line no one would know it. These boys are believing and don't be surprised if FC isn't hosting next week.

Hey you can say what you want I know Sussex and Riverheads are the two best teams in 1A football this year followed closely behind them is GW and Fort/Galax. AltaVista has a good team but in no way shape or form they are on the same level as Sussex and riverhead. If AltaVista was out west they would not win the west the same goes for PM if they were in the east they would have gotten put out already PM is overrated They beat an overrated Hurley team Now its time to walk the yard if PM wins I will eat my words same for AltaVista but I doubt it I will be in attendance to watch this one but it isn't going to be pretty for Atown.

I think those East predicitions are spot on. I really don't see GW losing this one...I'll say 24-14. As for Galax-Fort...it will be closer that the previous prediction, but Galax will carry this one home. I'll go 35-15. I'm not even sure on giving that 2 point conversion. Won't be making it out to any game though this week. So good luck to all still playing.

The Riverheads coach watched him go away in the ambulance. It was no secret to them. Sometimes it's more than trying to get an advantage and you want to thank a player for all of his hard work and wish him a speedy recovery.

Good analysis kwhs95fan. Not sure I agree with all the scores but you gave supporting evidence for what you have. Also I am not sure we know what to expect from Sussex and I am being completely honest. They certainly have talent but I just do not know enough about them to say assuredly which team can take that one. Both of those teams have speed for sure and very good defense so it's a toss up for me. I think the red team will get the win against CB but heart can't be measured so if those kids play as you stated, you just never know. Galax/Fort seems like there is a little extra juice on based on the earlier game. Great job by Fort in the first one but I gotta think Coach Dixon will make the needed adjustments to get the win in the rematch. Now to the one that has the most posters losing their freaking mind over for the showdown between GW/PM. I will say again as I said in another post. I believe these two are closer than some would give credit but I think GW does just enough to pull it off. It literally is a coin flip for me as I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see PM pull off the win.

Good luck to all this week and safe travels

Thanks for the likes on my post guys! Sometimes I just like to have fun on here and for the most part everyone takes my stuff with a grain of salt and in good fun! I appreciate it!

I do agree with the fan that there was nothing like practicing on Thanksgiving weekend! It means that you are still playing and playing well! :)

In the one game that I feel qualifed to say anything about, I will say that "Ironman Football" needs to bring their "A" game to "Red Pride Nation". I have seen the 'Heads play and they are the real deal!

Another question: Who is the Lucas kid's father? Is it Larry Lu or McKeith or none of the above?

I agree with you that the lineman don't get near the recognition they deserve. I know there's a lot of talk about our backfield on here but without the key players on the line even having the best backs on the field won't do you any good.

Outside of Riverheads I thought Sussix was the best team I saw Luray play, and there was not a lot of difference,I thought Sussix was more talented and Riverheads was more machine like.

I think the ft chiswell/ Galax game is a toss up because I watch some film on it and rider could not be stopped on defense or offense! But Peoples will probably get going and score 6 tds.

For the gw and pm game I think too much speed from gw! But I think it will be close through 3 and gw will pull it out and be too much at the end.

Sussex and altavista is gonna be lob sided and I see altavista getting some scores late!

And riverheads will be riverheads! That's all I'll say about that coaching and offense will be too much!
