My thoughts on Stansbury...

This won't be what many of you are expecting...I'll just tell you that up front. The summary of my Bruiseresque diatribe is that I have alot of thoughts, but no answers...

I'm over the emotions of today's loss. Moving on. I hate getting caught up in the back and forth like I've allowed myself to do today. It's the single most divisive thing that our fanbase participates in, and it never helps anything at all. When it comes to basketball, we literally might as well call ourselves Ole Miss. The back and forth is that divisive and ridiculous. The worst part? The conviction of both sides is becoming so deeply-seeded that it is becoming increasingly impossible to ever reunite us all back on the same page. That's truly sad, and everybody suffers in this scenario.

Now, moving on. How do we ever get past this? Unfortunately, it isn't going to be easy or quick. The quickest possible way, IMO, would be the hiring of a new coach that comes in and immediately has greater success than Stans ever has, while getting the fans/players to buy into changing the culture around the program. Greater success than we've had before is the ONLY possible uniting factor, whether it comes from Stans or a new coach. Unfortunately, it is UNLIKELY that the new guy could come in and immediately have greater success, and if it doesn't happen quickly, you just end up with an even more greatly divided fanbase, which becomes even harder on the 3rd new coach(and we can again compare ourselves to Ole Miss). For this reason, I'm "scared" of the proposition of firing Stansbury. This is the best we've ever been in basketball, and maybe we truly are just plain spoiled by the success we've enjoyed. I'm not beyond the idea of this possibility. Unfortunately, there is NO WAY to decisively know the right answer until we've been down that road...

Now, the problem I have with Stans, beyond the well-known floor/practice complaints, is that he simply does NOT fit in idealistically or stylistically with the current athletics administration at State. He was the best part of the previous administration. No question. Cohen, Mullen, Stricklin, Steudeman, and Keenum are all a particular "type" of people who are charismatic, promote the HECK out of their programs, constantly involve the fans, are considered cutting-edge top-notch hires in their profession, and are very capable of firing up the fanbase. At this point, Stans is none of these things unfortunately. Our basketball program, IMO, is dying the same death now that our baseball program died the last few years under Polk in terms of dwindling crowds and fan support. The product on the court is not nearly as bad, but the people in the seats are going down a similar path. Going into the 4th season since the change, baseball is STILL has not fully recovered from that. Hopefully, we are back at 70-80% this year, but it's been hard to get people to buy in for Cohen. It'll be EVERY BIT as hard for the next potential basketball coach. Fortunately though, the cupboard in basketball is not nearly as bare as it was in baseball, and EFFORT is something that is far more easily seen.

I could fully get behind ANY team...even if they are a .500 team full of lightly-recruited 3*s...if they showed me great heart and determination. We haven't seen that consistently in a long time on our basketball team. How can the fans allow themselves to care, if the team itself doesn't? That's one of the things that makes today's loss sting so bad...because we actually DID see a glimpse of this approach 2 nights ago against Ole Miss. Seeing the potential get approached, then immediately thereafter seeing it get utterly wasted, is a tough pill to swallow, regardless of who is actually at fault for it happening...

I've been struggling with where I sit on the "Stansbury bandwagon" and I think you summed my feelings up perfectly there. I'm not in love with Stans at all because like you said, he doesn't fall in line with our athletic dept and does a poor job at creating excitement. In addition, it's tough seeing us get every ounce out of our talent in football and baseball, yet quite the opposite is true of basketball. That's what makes it frustrating. It's kind of a feeling of coulda, woulda, shoulda, which is more difficult than just not having the talent and knowing that going in. I think that's the heart of why some people don't like Stans/don't get on board with this team. People at State are used to rooting for "underdogs" and teams that get the most of their talent, and Stans' teams are pretty much the opposite of that.

Like you, everytime I think we should make a change, I envision all the failures that have recently been hired in the SEC, and I back off the thought. If I thought we could make a solid hire, I'd maybe be on board for a change, but I just don't know that would be the case. The results of this season will go a long way into helping me make up my mind on Stans. Hopefully, this team gets it together and makes a good run to make it a bit easier on me.

but you are simply wrong to even consider the firing of a coach who has been more succesful long-term than any other team coach at MSU (except Ron Polk) when he has proven himself still able to put a Top 20 caliber team on the court/field. It ois beyond ridiculous/realistic and arrogant at a program with the resourcesof MSU. Please realize that Stans is the only reason you can even consider such ridiculous thoughts that we can do better.

I like to call what a lot of our fan base is going through "Jeff Bower Syndrome." Upsets happen in college basketball. I hate to sound like a Stans apologist, but he's given us the most success we've EVER had as a program. He gets some of the best prospects in the NATION to come spend 3 or 4 years in Starkville, Mississippi. Think about that for a second. Yes, it's frustrating to lose games we should have won, it seems to be Stans' MO. But he also gets us into the tournament a hell of a lot. If you want to judge him, do it at the end of the season, not after every loss. Funny how he gets all the blame for the losses, but no credit whatsoever for any of our 19 wins. Rant over.

This argument sounds like penn state and Jo pa. The coach is never bigger than the program. As for the hire, has the Ath dept let us down recently? LT isn't hiring for us anymore.

and a first-rate recruiter. I doubt that opposing coaches are worried about his coaching ability but I'm sure we have players who trouble them. Could we do better? Who knows. His success in the SEC, (and he's been successful) has been overshadowed by his dearth of NCAA wins. Sure we've had some bad match ups but it would be nice for us to be a bad match up for a higher seeded--maybe this year. And he's far too forgiving of bad seeds and players with issues, some of whom probably should have not been recruited in the first place. He seems like the dumb girl who thinks she can change a bad boy so she lets him screw her whenever he wants only to be surprised when he cheats on her.

Because his coaching ability is suspect, perhaps he needs top-flight athletes. Has he ever been able to turn C

Yes upsets do happen. But a 19-5 team with a 13 home winning streak should not lose to a team under .500. I don't care if we were coming off a Friday night game that ended at 11:59pm. It should not happen and it is not excusable in any way.

or even Ole Miss. We know that Stans will have us in the top 25 ever few years, but will most likely not get to the round of 16. Could we hire a better coach? Maybe. But we could just as easily become completely irrelevant. Now, a big difference than in the past is that we have a kick *** A.D. that could get a good coach in here. And Mississippi always has top notch basketball talent. But, one wrong move, and it's over for a long while. It's a f*cking maddening situation to be in. Which should be a shock to not one single fan of Mississippi State.

..When Mullen loses a game he doesn't fit ("damn yankee").

Same with Cohen. (You can insert your own cliche').

Now Stansbury suddenly doesn't fit @ MSU.

If you are going to bash a coach after he loses a game he shouldn't, claiming he doesn't fit is pretty standard sports messagboard fare.

Try to come up with something a little more original.

Polk's team finished the season ranked 9th(NCBWA, the first archive I found) in 2007, before he was let go in 2008, for leading us to our first losing season since 1975. He is the 7th winningest coach in the history of the NCAA, #1 in the history of the SEC, by a mile. Even after the down years, State is a top 10 overall job in baseball, and Ron Polk is solely responsible for making it that way. He was let go the year after going to the equivalent of the "Elite 8", the 6th time he'd led us to such an accomplishment(7th if you give him credit for McMahon's). He was more successful than Stans ever thought about being. Now, granted, the intangible cards fall ALOT more in our favor with baseball than basketball(hyper-talented region, weather, a HUGE rabid fanbase(Polk created), etc)...

Point being...does ANYONE feel that we were better off with keeping Polk than we are with Cohen right now? Cohen still hasn't even got it fully turned around, led us to our 2nd and 3rd losing seasons in 35 years, and hasn't fully captured the fan support back yet, but after this past season, I think most are on board that the right decision was made regarding Polk/Cohen. Agreed?

I accept the point your making here. I just see this basketball team as a very similar situation to our baseball team/program in 2007.

has NOTHING to do with the loss today. It's something I've been thinking about for a LONG time.

The reason he doesn't fit has to do with the dwindling fan support and complacency around the program. If the HUMP was still rocking and games were sold out, my opinion would be different. It's easy to get on board when everyone is on board. As is, you've got to "pick a side" and there is no logical middle ground. I'd also be HAPPY with where we are IF I felt like he was trying his absolute best to get every ounce out of our players. I just don't see it with Stans at this point, just like I didn't see it with Polk for the last 10 years.

You can say that a "coach isn't responsible for putting butts in seats", but I'd disagree, and offer Mullen as example #1. Look at the difference in fan support from Mullen to Croom. That difference was present from DAY ONE before a single game was played. Why? Because he "sold" his program so well in comparison...

my opinion is that Stans has still got it, but I could be wrong. I think he deserves at least 3 more years to see.

is directly dependent upon success (advancing) in the NCAA tournament. We won't be a "successful program" in basketball until we get past game 2 of the NCAA tourney. The regular season is just seeding for the tournament. I have no faith whatsoever in Stans ability to get us to the Sweet 16 and beyond therefore, I have no faith that he can truly bring us success in hoops.Honestly, does it really make a **** if we go 26-2 in the regular season and get bounced from the tourney in game 1 or 2?Nope. It still means the season was a failure.

Winning SEC regular season and SEC tournament titles matter. They aren't as cool as sweet 16's, but they matter nonetheless.
