doesn't look like a typical pro athlete.
Kevin Durant - Twig. Jared Lorenzen - Fat slow lefty. Rocco Mediate - fat n weak. Lance Berkman - slow n fat. Paul Pierce - slow n chubby. Every time I watch any of these guys my first thought is always "how the 17 are they that good". Can you name some more?

It's not about who looks the best in a uniform. It's about who can get it done.

Here's one Babe Ruth. He looked fat and lazy but he could run the bases faster than most guys today and hit for power like nobody before or since. Oh, did I mention that he won a few games as a pitcher and once was the league's best pitcher and won two World Series games as a pitcher. His career ERA was 2.02, dude could play some ball but he certainly did not look the part.

Pretty is as pretty does.

One lady complained about his eating drinking and eating habits. He replied, "Hell, lady, I ain't no athlete. I'm a baseball player."

One NFL bust was described as "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane".

One of my all-time favorite David Letterman moments was when he called Forster a "fat tub of goo" on his show one night. About a week later Forster came on the show and Dave apologized to him. Forster said his first reaction was to be angry, "but then I looked in the mirror and realized, oh hell, he's right."

Even 10 years ago he looked like an old white guy playing basketball. <div>
</div><div>(Just based on looking at a still picture of him. His play is far better)</div>

He was only considered big at the time, because most guys were probably 5'6" and 150.

If Babe Ruth played today, he be about average sized for a Second Baseman.

large beer belly with bird like legs in many of the photos I have seen of him. Hey, I am not picking on a guy that made the game look easy in his era and also practiced gluttony on the side, it is pretty well documented that he liked his beer, women, and hot dogs, not necessarily in that order.

Corey Pavin. I think I was bigger than that guy at 12. He's like 5'6 130lbs and will kick your *** on a golf course.

There is a skinnier one and a fat one. A lot of people think of Ruth as fat because they remember the 1927 Babe Ruth that was, well, fat, because that was the year he hit 60 home runs, and that was also the Yankees greatest team during the Babe Ruth era. I think that's the picture you and most people- including me- have in your head when you think about him.

But around 1921 when Ruth was really at his peak in terms of playing, he was really just a big guy, but he wasn't fat.

Ruth has 123 career stolen bases, and he also has five seasons of 10 or more steals- including 1930 when he was 35, which is pretty good for a guy that size. I think he has an image of not being a great baserunner because he is seen as fat and because he was infamously thrown out to end the World Series in 1926, allowing the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series. (Yes, it felt good for me to type that).

And let's not forget that for much of Ruth's career he had Lou Gehrig hitting behind him, so running might cause the other team to pitch around the Iron Horse, of course they would then have to get by Tony Lazerri, a HOF second baseman.

I'm 5'11" and 170 lbs... I towered over him at the Shell Houston open a few years ago. He's 5'8" and 135 lbs (that's a guess).

not so much in baseball. If you can pitch you can pitch and if you can hit you can hit, if you can do those things well you get some leeway on your waistline.

I was definitely bigger than him. This was in 2009. I thought the wind was going to blow him away he was so small.

Charles Howell III is the same way.

I am going on memory here but from what I remember his foot speed would have been better than most guys today. He wasn't Ricky Henderson fast but the dude could run even overweight.
