Willie said (starts at 54:40) he thinks Sidun will most likely end up at 133 after possibly a year or two at 125. Given Sidun is only a junior, I don't think anyone, including Sidun himself, knows if he will be able to make 125 effectively all four years.

The beauty of not participating beyond the rationale provided by Cael, is that it allows the competition to face off and determine where the REAL competition is. It is always fun to watch wrestling without a dog in the fight. Should be some great matches. Top seed is Iowa.
fair point.... on not having a dog in the fight. (do you think the dual record had anything to do with the decision however?)

IMHO, it had nothing to do with the decision. CS has been pretty consistent over the years at not being all that attracted to National Duals at the start of the season.

Edit: I'd also add that CS did agree to one iteration of National Duals, and then Iowa reneged on the agreement. I have no inside info on how much that influenced CS on subsequent conversations about the National Duals, but if he wasn't all that into the idea, and then reluctantly goes along to not be an impediment, and has that crap happen, I suspect that it soured him even more.

In a few years, Sidun and Sanchez can rock-paper-scissors to determine who gets to eat more.

yeah... Cael has said that he doesnt believe you need a national duals to add credibility or even interest to the sport... I agree... at least the way it is done now. But I feel like anytime the biggest teams participate in an event... it can add interest and attraction... something the sport is looking for

Knowing Cael... he seems to run to competition / not away from it and doubtful he puts as much stock in that record as the fans do! But cant help but to wish we were involved! Like Headlock said... it is interesting to watch with no dog in the fight but I like having a little skin in the game! Its always more exciting.

Wasn't there some iteration of an national duals champion where PSU wrestled OSU for the title of number of years ago? I think it was in that dual that Nick Suriano got hurt and could not wrestle in the NCAA tourney

Yep, which pretty much put the final nail in that coffin.

I personally think Cael might not view the record as a necessity to his resume. I do believe however that Cael understands that the record would mean a lot to the wrestlers that were part of it and also the fan base and supporters.

Cael doesn't care what Tom says and or believes.
With that said, I don't see anything outrageous or wrong with Ryan offering that opinion. It is a majority opinion.
Whywould you go out of your way to make that your opening statement? No one asked about PSU. They were there to talk about their upcoming duals.

I'm not so sure it's a valid opinion even if it's a majority opinion. If these other teams had 7 guys on the u23 team on top of the u20 and senior level teams I bet they'd feel differently. Also Penn State is going to wrestle 6 of the teams at that event. The irony is that the opposing fan bases caring about Penn State not being there are infinitely more excited for the national duals because Penn State isn't there, because their team may actually win now...

Tan Tom can’t help himself. LOL. His opening remark is that PSU should be here and it shows what Cael thinks about things

tip to Tan Tom..worry about yourself bud

The date doesn't work it needs to moved back a few weeks. The main issue is they want to try to get everyone there and then in a few years say this is gonna be the NCAA dual team championship and change the way the NCAA tournament is. Because the NCAA will only give out 1 team title a year .Wrestling has one event a year that's successful and people want to change it. It's ridiculous wrestling always shoots itself in the foot. Cael knows that if we don't go they can never do that. That's what his ulterior motive comment was all about. They crowd won't be great in Tulsa. They are now giving out $10 tickets to youth clubs in the area

I’m with Corby on this one. Nationals is the crown jewel of wrestling, the one thing that is a rousing success in all aspects - tradition, popularity, financially.

That people want to screw with that is either stupid or self-serving. There are plenty of both in the wrestling community. I’ll let you guys decide which one Ryan is in terms of this one.

I may make fun of Tom Brands at times because it’s fun as a PSU fan, but you have to also respect him. In terms of this I think he’s a guy who is in the similar position to Ryan right now in terms of overtaking PSU, but he’s not pushing an agenda to make duals a part of or a substitute for crowning the NC at Nationals. I don’t think Iowa would participate if it meant changing the individual tournament format. The guy knows what wrestling is all about.

The guys pushing the dual tournament as a national championship will kill the golden goose. It would be a different story if the NCAA would back a separate championship - split season is interesting- but that’s just not happening.

To me, it’s ok until he moves into flat out saying that Penn State isn’t interested in growing the sport.
That’s a pretty serious accusation, and it implies a selfishness to how Cael runs things, that his actions help his team to the detriment of wrestling.
