It's been discussed before, but here's another article today. Good advice from Chipper Jones. This is why the Nats are idiots. If they wanted to limit his innings, they should have just had him skip every 4th or 5th start throughout the season and kept him available for the postseason.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nats--...title-opportunity-at-hand-makes-no-sense.html

Signifies the total ruin of the game of baseball. This is the most stupid thing I've ever seen or heard of.

"Got to rest, so I'm not going to even try to win this world championship." When an individual's "exertion" becomes more important than a team world championship, it is time to watch a different game. Players should all be willing to give their career up for one title. This all-but-guarantees Strasburg never goes down as one of the greats, regardless of how good his career is.

I'd rather put guys in the HOF that took steroids in order to overachieve, compared to the guy that "rested during a playoff run" in order to preserve his career.

except for part of the reasoning behind the innings limit is to allow him a full rest and recovery period in the offseason instead of an abbreviated one. and a pitcher is throwing in between starts, even if his starts are skipped, and while that's not as intense as actually throwing in a game, it's still stress on the arm.

i live in dc and go to nats games all the time, and i can't fault them at all for making this decision. and i am actively rooting for them to win it all. it amazes me that a lot of internet badasses and tv talking heads think they see a solution that rizzo and the front office haven't thought about a thousand times over.

and a pitcher's elbow isn't like playing on a rolled ankle or a mild muscle strain. you can get a cortisone shot and play through those injuries and they won't end your career if you aggrevate them again. wrecklessly pushing a pitcher with less than 100 innings in the bigs entering 2012 and coming off TJ surgery is career threatening. no, saving him doesn't guarantee future health, and pitching him doesn't guarantee future injury, but you have to take the advice given by the multiple surgeons that do these surgeries year after year including james andrews and make the best decision based on their advice and recommendations.

don't be that *******. if you have the lure of a $100+M contract extension laying out in front of you if you can stay healthy another season or 2, you'd risk blowing out your arm for good? a pitcher's elbow/shoulder is not like a sprained ankle.

also fwiw, strasburg has said they'll have to tear the ball out of his hands if they wanna shut him down. rizzo is taking charge and making the decision for everyone and shouldering the responsiblity of it.

also, with your attitude, i hope you don't like football cause ryan clark of the steelers sat out last season's playoff game at denver because he's anemic or something and previously had health complications due to playing in the altitude and had to be rushed to the hospital. obviously there was no guarantee he'd have the same complications last year, but the franchise and the coach took the decision away from him and sat him down. they put his personal health above the team winning a championship. so why don't you find a new hobby on the weekends in the fall buddy.

If that's the case, then start him late next year if you need to. Skipping every 5th start this season and starting a month late next season would be a small price to pay for a potential World Series championship. And that would give him every benefit they're getting by shutting him down in September. You'd limit his innings and give him more of an offseason to recover.
