NCAA Numbers Rule Change / Retired Numbers

The NCAA just approved a rule change that will now allow players for the first time to wear any number between 0 and 99. For decades the NCAA has restricted single and two-digit jersey numbers beginning with 6, 7, 8 and 9 with 55 being the highest number available.

Will be intereting to see who the first Rutgers players to ever wear these number will be. Maybe Dylan will wear his dad's number 9 at Rutgers.

Also, with so many additional numbers now available for players to choose from it definitely will make it easier for the program to retire numbers for more players going forward. Personally, I think 24 for RHJ and 0 for Geo (After Simpson is done playing) should be hung up in the rafters.

That seems like a big deal - I like that a lot - it is silly that there are so many more charges called in NCAA basketball than anywhere else - it encourages defenders to slide under airborne offensive players
This rule change also makes it more difficult to draw a charge after a pass - I HATE that call

The number rule was idiotic, hopefully, NFHS does the same.

My understanding is that it was so officials could indicate to the scorer who fouls were on with one hand (1 or 2 gestures depending on if two digit #). Rule didn't bother me, nor will the new rule. Don't get why it needed to be changed though.

Would make sense if everyone involved were deaf and the scorer wasn't watching the game, but yes, that is my understanding of the intention of the rule too.
AAU has allowed 0-99 for years, so has FIBA and the NBA - NFHS still has the old rule.

There are a number of interesting other rule changes that have also passed. Another of note is Anytime the ball hits the rim and the offense retains possession in the front court, the shot clock will reset to 20 seconds.

It's to make it easier on the referees. When they signal a foul to the bench, they use one hand for each digit in the number. You only have five fingers on a hand, so the highest number you can represent is 55.

Assuming now they will have to change the way they signal, and the scores table will have to be paying more attention.

Retired numbers have been limited to players who were selected as College All Americans.

I would rather our top player/PG to always wear 0.

Didn’t read the article, but for those that don’t know the reason they used to limit #’s to 5 or less (so #55 would be the highest number and no 6,7,8,or 9’s) was so the ref and the scorers table could identify every player with hand signals and they only have 5 fingers on each hand. Outdated for sure.

And that's why players used to have different numbers at home and on the road also so no two players on the court had the same number. For example, Phil Sellers was #12 at home and #13 when he began his career at Rutgers. The first time I noticed this was in the early 80's with Phi Slama Jama. Akeem Olajuwon was #34 in white and #35 in red. Jacob Young's father wore #42 in white an #43 in red. Clyde Drexler #22 & #23 and so on.
