It may come down to if our (NU) offense is healthy enough to take advantage and if we can limit Tennessee's big plays. We have also been better in TO margin, which we will need to win, to have a chance.

I agree with most of that.

Naturally, I wonder if Tennessee's defense can take some steps forward through 15 bowl practices. It would be unrealistic to suggest they get drastically better, but if they can just find a few stops, it would make a world of difference.

Really unusual close to the season. Tennessee's defense had historically bad days vs Kentucky and Mizzou, but we still won both games by a combined 36 points and it really wasn't even that close... Vandy's defense was good enough to keep us out of the endzone. They have the number one redzone defense in the country and that was the difference in the game for us.

Now, Nebraska is better than all 3 of those teams so I am not banking on Tennessee winning another game with the defense Tennessee has employed in its last 3 contests.

It is hard to stomach how bad our special teams are. These stats reflect that.

If the Huskers can muster a ball control game it will help. We don't do that well in the offensive scoring fests for games.

I was thinking the same thing. Couldnt we just line up in the shotgun like we were gonna run a play and have whoever kick the ball?

It's only 8yrds less that the top 10. Not as big a deal as it's made out to be.

So, essentially a first down between the offense and the end zone?

I would say that's relatively significant.

It can be. The point is that it's not that far off the best out there and a lot of that is on the punt coverage.

I can't ever remember such craptastic offensive stats. Special teams, especially punting and punt returns, are horrible as well. How did we ever win 9 games?

Im sure most teams have a -2 and a 5 yard punt in the same lifetime. Thank goodness he booted a couple 50+ yarders or his average would be in the twenties.

Holy Jeez. A&M's punt return is insane! They AVERAGED basically a quarter of the football field every return. 11 yards better than even the 2nd place team? This has to be one of the craziest stats I have ever seen. And yes, we all know Nebraska's punt return sucked. That is obvious. There is no reason to believe it could ever average what A&M did though. Wow!

12 punt returns all season for the team, 4 went to the house. So while the TDs and average are very impressive, the lack of chances is also concerning.

Christian Kirk ran 2 back against New Mexico St in the 8th game of the season and had a 93 yarder against Miss St the following week. The remaining 8 returns netted a total 34 yards.

Nick Harvey also returned his only punt return for the year for TD against prairie view A&M.

Sometimes you have to look deeper than just the average yards.

Still sounds very impressive to me. Out of 12 punts they returned 4 for TDs. That's insane.

I figured it may be skewed.. but only 12 returns all year? That's even crazier than the average!

the number of TDs is impressive and I said it was.

I was responding to the comment about flipping the field on every punt return. That simply didn't happen. For the first 7 games of the season Kirk had 5 punt returns for about 30 yards. He then took 2 back against an overmatched team in a blow out and 1 against Miss St when they were getting blown out.

The punt returns game had absolutely zero impact in the games. A&M was going to beat prairie view and New Mexico St without the returns and they lost to Miss St regardless of the return.

Speaking of A&M and looking deeper than the stats... Myles Garrett had 8.5 sacks and 4 of those came vs UT-San Antonio.

And he is being listed on some All-American teams in front of Derek Barnett who has 12 sacks, all of which came vs P5 opponents.

Hope Garrett's professional production than that of his college career. He's a good player but Derek Barnett's production absolutely engulfs Garrett's.
