Nebraska nice

Since last Saturday there have been numerous people from BYU and national media gushing about how great of fans we are. Fine. That's great. I try to be as good of sport as anyone else and will teach my children to do the same. However, it really bugs me that Nebraska fans are sharing and bragging about all of these stories. We didn't win the game, yet many fans share these stories like we did. If I were in Lincoln I would have said "good game" to all the BYU fans I encountered just like everyone else. BUT, we need to stop giving ourselves pats on the back for such behavior.

Sorry. Rant over.

It's a part of who Nebraskans are in general. There is no problem feeling proud of our state and its people because of it. It will just be nice when our football team earns back the reputation of kicking butt too. I remember a billboard in Omaha from when I was a kid that said: "Nebraska, the nicest place you'll ever lose."

I'd also like to add that one of the reasons Nebraska is such a great place to live is the people. They're not just nice during football games, it's all the time. Believe me, it's not like that everywhere.

Guess I don't see why it matters? If we suddenly become an A-hole fan base will the Huskers magically begin winning Championships??? We can continue to maintain a level of generosity and warm hospitality and be a Championship Caliber team as well. Why sacrifice integrity and goodwill? Unless of course we're talking about Io_a, then we can be complete jack wagons and it won't bother me. :)

Yes, Nebraskans are nice. One of the reasons I wouldn't live anywhere else. But we don't have to chalk that up as a win after a tough loss. We lost.

No one said to sacrifice integrity and goodwill.

Who's claiming we won the day based on niceness? I don't think anyone is commissioning a Crystal Football of Niceness Trophy nor is anyone petitioning to place it beside our Sears trophies.:p

Not saying we chalk it up as a win, but what's the alternative? Losing sucked on Saturday. The news that people were treated so well does make me proud to be a Husker. But it doesn't count as a victory in my book; it's an unrelated event.

Maybe it is just my social media content, but I have heard more about us being nice then about us losing...

That very well could be the case... I have never bought in to social media. Sometimes I feel like I'm the last one, but I have no interest in Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or any other social media outlet.

It's great that we're getting so much attention for being hospitable fans, and I would never suggest we do anything different in that regard. But at the same time I'd trade a win for the attention we're getting for being nice.

It's kind of like this board. We hear so much about all the good stuff from Saturday and how we are going in the right direction that I wonder if anyone remembers we actually lost the game.

Luckily most of us separate what happens on the field with what happens in the stands. It can be done pretty easily. After the Husker game I headed to St. Louis and saw some Cardinal games, including three between the Cards and Cubs. Good rivalry on the field and saw not one word between anyone of the two fan bases. I'm a Cardinal and went with two Cubbies and it's amazing how easy it is to get along. Like a couple of other posters mentioned above, that attitude is from most people who live here-- not just our football fans. It's just a great place to live. And I'll still take positive publicity. It's easy to be polite winners. Not easy being polite losers.

That's something b/c the Cubs/Cards fans really don't like each other. Of course scoreboard has tilted one direction in that rivalry for quite some time, so I guess there really shouldn't be much discourse between those fanbases...

I can't attest to the rest of the state, but personally, I think 'Nebraska Nice' is a myth in Omaha at least. For a Husker game or something, Nebraskans are nice but when the cameras are off, most people are as rude as any other place I've been but with a little extra passive aggressiveness thrown in.

I would trade our nice guy image in a heartbeat if we got mid-90's style dominance in return.

Nice is OK, but kicking butt is much better.

I don't think anyone disagrees. But niceness has nothing to do with not kicking butt. I'm just as frustrated that the narrative about husker football is that our fans are nice. But our fans can't change the narrative to "Huskers kick butt" by changing their attitude. So why all the angst?
