when each position has at least one and preferable two people that can start. Competition produces depth which produces quality. For 4 years what depth has there been at quarterback?

Being able to "start" means nothing, because we'll start 11 guys on each side regardless of talent. Having 1-2 people at each position that are all-conference caliber is a better judge.

Woah, ask for much at Christmas? 1-2 at EACH position who are all-conference caliber. How many all-conference did we have this year? That gives an idea of how far we need to go to climb out of this mess.

If we want to use all-conference as our standard, I'd suggest having 5 or 6 on each side of the ball at all-conference level would be great. Maybe that's even ambitious. Suggesting 1-2 at EACH position is a pipe dream.

A great defense wouldn't hurt either.

We had 2 in 2009 and 2010.

What position hurt us?

Not that you're wrong. But a great QB can cover that up in this day and age of college football. You just need a decent defense when you have a great Qb.

.... Global warming advances to the point where California, Texas, Florida and the rest of SEC country are akin to living on the sun and the temperate climates and thus recruiting hotbeds relocate to the northern states

Patience.... In another century or two we will dominate.
Don't forget that a large portion of the southern seaboard will be under water, too. Make Nebraska Great Again.

I'm not so sure. By the calculations, I think 1-200 years = a 3.8 degree overall temperature hike. Not gonna get us where we need to be!!

... an internal culture of winning returns. Coaching & recruiting is important, but players must take ownership of their program and demand it of themselves.

Winning must become a habit again. Fans can only demand so much. It's the players who have to say this isn't good enough and demand it of themselves each and every day and hold each other accountable.

To clarify my inarticulate statement, what I was thinking was 1-2 at each position that are all-conference caliber by the time their career is done, not for that particular season. Typically that would mean the Junior/Senior in the all conference conversation, with a redshirt freshmen or sophomore backing him up that is in the same conversation a year or two later.

The standard posed was "greatness". If you look at every team in the "greatness" category right now, I don't think the above clarification is out of bounds.

And vice versa.
A great qb also needs a good o line. We are trending up in both qb and line, or we should be.
Defense should be as well, but we need to be great there, too.

I think that's an over simplification.

IMO, its when the BlackShirts return Nebraska to a consistent top 15 defense. Iowa and Wisconsin have been playing better defense than Nebraska for the last half decade.

When we have All-American and All Big Ten offensive linemen. When all five of them make at least honorable mention All BIg Ten. On a continuing basis.

Define All-Conference caliber. Just 1st team or 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?

2009 All Big 12
First team O-no one; D- Suh, Crick, Prince, Asante
Second team O- , Helu; D- Phil; ST- Henery
Hon mention - Dejon Gomes, Eric Hagg, Jacob Hickman, Mike McNeill, Matt O’Hanlon, Niles Paul, Barry Turner
13 of 22 psns, plus 1 special teams guy.

2012 All Big 10 Coaches
First team- TMart, Long; Second team- Amar, Bell, Sirles, Maher, Martin, Stein, Compton, Stafford

For comparison, only Gerry broke onto the second team this year.

I can research how many there have been on each team. That wasn't the question. To return to greatness, people are stating x number of all conference players are needed. What constitutes all conference? Just 1st team or any mention on an all conference squad?

2012 TMart + 2009 team = damn close. That might be mid 80s level.

Combining squads? Honorable mention counts?
Just add the 2012 version of TMart to that team. For the count, that would then be 8 first or second team players (2012 TMart probably 2nd team after McCoy). Sub Tmart for Zac Lee. You now have a backfield featuringTM, Helu, Burkhead, with Paul and McNeil as feature receivers. And a defense that was absolute nails by season's end. I think that team wins a lot of games, possibly even a MNC appearance in place of TX.
I don't think an actual count of All Conf players is the metric, but what psns the good ones occupy is. QB was a big hole that season. And by the time TMart was at his most dangerous, our D was a shell of its 2009 self.
