Let’s be realistic, becoming competitive with the middle of the pack in the big ten really becomes the first step, if we recruit at or above those teams and obviously win a reasonable number of games that leads to better recruiting and hopefully the next step in terms of program growth. At this point, until you have three or four years of comparable recruiting ( PSU, OSU, and Michigan) we are not going to beat these teams, at this point they simply have a roster of far better personnel. To think some coach is going to show up at Rutgers and in a short time become Competitve with the top teams in the league is naive and or uniformed.
If you want to find fault with Greg, his first staff was inadaquate to for the task at hand, and the the program did not make the significant strides that were necessary. It seems that this has finally been fixed, and hopefully this will be reflected with a better record. This was never going to quick, at this level you can’t outcoach a significant talent disparity and you can’t get significantly better talent until you begin to show W/L improvement.
Well put.

I'm certain in 2yrs we'll be looking at who is the next coach. He's not getting more than 4 wins this year and the heat is growing.

Bielima is a known quantity. I definitely would hire Schiano.
I figured that was the case, and at this point not sure I agree with you, but that's OK. Bielema was a disaster for the Hogs. Time will tell what happens with Schiano, but have said multiple times this is a pivotal year for Greg. Pulling hard for him to turn it around. Great person. Great program builder. Solid on defense X's and O's. Hope the offense gets moving under our new OC.

Here's a tougher question. Bielema or John L. Smith? Death is not an option. 😜

Reading everything y’all are saying……..it starts with an offensive line that can block!

.....and has depth. In the Big 10 it's necessary to have backups you can trot in with very little dropoff in performance. We're getting there. Our peers, though, can rotate their lines thereby keeping their starters fresh. We're able to do that on defense, but still have a way to go on offense.

I'd like to know why Greg's first staff was inadequate. Has he never been a head coach before? Was he unaware of how things work in big-time, college athletics? Here you get this wonderful opportunity to return to coaching (at your first love, RU, no less) and you bring in a staff that is mediocre/un-proven/woefully incapable? Did he not know that all eyes were going to be on him after getting a nice, big/long-term contract .. competing in the B1G no less?

These are the kinds of things I'd imagine that an experienced coach would know and understand. He should've come in and said, "Here's where I want to go with this team and here's how we'll get there". But, if results on the field can be used as a measuring stick, I'd say .. ummm .. maybe we should've gone in another direction.

I'm not saying that in his first year or two (or three) he's going to be able to out-recruit/out-coach/out-compete all of the other programs here but I expect him to be making very deliberate decisions that lead to successful outcomes. And, that's what I've yet to see.

I hope this year we can (finally) see what we were all hoping to see last season - a good, competitive team.

Your choice of “successful outcomes” is a very interesting choice of words. Successful outcomes don’t happen by chance. They happen in college football mostly because fans have chipped in to build the best product possible. Recruits are rational and they are not going to choose worse product over a better product.

Right now, we need a football Fieldhouse and NIL to ensure successful outcomes. Without these improvements, it is difficult to win recruiting battles. Korey Duff and Jaylen Hornsby are two impact recruits, who would have elevated the program to success. Right now, Hornsby is headed elsewhere, and Duffs status is up in the air.

Successful coaches don’t want to be involved in a rebuild because it’s too much work. So we hired coaches that were light on experience, but were willing to work hard. Now that we have an adequate talent base, we’ve brought in experienced coaches who are going to be able to take the talent onhand to the next level.

Clueless. It takes time to build a dominant offensive line that can dominate the LOS, like our 2006 OL. That’s what will be in place by ‘25. The kids are on the roster, and are developing.

OMG! NO, Just NO!
The fat bastard or the guy that couldn‘t coach his way out of a paper bag? Arkansas has suffered enough already. Our previous AD’s could not get it correct that you have to hire winning coaches that can recruit and actually coach. Plus, evidently it should be mandatory that they cannot ride a motorcycle.

I forgot about Bobby. That is quite a trifecta. We only had a twofecta in Flood and Ash. There's time for us though.

In reading this thread it's clear who has tunnel vision and who is able to see around corners.

The results to date haven't been pretty but he's building a team with meticulous precision.

The visitor lists for the last two weeks speak for themselves and if you've ever been in a room with GS you know that he's extremely hard to say no to. The thing holding him back is the logo on his polo but the perception is slowly changing.

Kids are growing up knowing Rutgers in B1G.

I'd like to know why Greg's first staff was inadequate.

Sometimes people just don't work out. I mean, as an example, look at Gleeson. Everyone heralded his hiring as a major coup: he was viewed as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Yet he couldn't seem to handle it at the P5 level and didn't seem to be able to develop the QB's in our program. Why, who knows. It just happens.

I'm not entirely certain that Gleeson was the problem. What we cannot know for sure is the degree to which Gleeson was free to do what he wanted versus adhere to constraints from GS.

Having said that, the OC's job is to be effective while also working within the system imposed by the HC and Gleeson obviously couldn't get that job done. So it made sense to move on and give someone else a try.

I am going to guess that those on the Schiano wagon are on the sales side of things where narratives can be massaged to sell the product vs. something on the analytic side where review of facts are necessary.

Yeah, I don't know how much of a clash there was between his philosophy and what Schiano wanted to run. But I do know it really seemed like we were not getting any real QB development with what we had. I'll be interested to see how KC and his Sunshine Band do with that.

You mean, like people who ask what others do for living in an anonymous internet forum and consider the answer factual?

Well then let me answer for Al, who's far too modest to do so himself. Al is the CEO of a hedge fund and has an estimated net worth of several billion dollars. That fits well with your idea that his support for GS is due to his fondness for creating narratives to sell his services to the wealthy and profit greatly from it.

Next question.

It will be interesting, for sure.

I maintain my position (in which I feel like Captain Obvious) that the job here is massively difficult and any coaching staff is more likely to fail than succeed. But it's possible to succeed and I hope the current staff can figure it out given that's the quickest path to a happy fan base.

If this staff can't do it, then it's back to the beginning and that much longer to a happy fan base.

That Greg Schiano will get it done here.

He's on a mission and has a plan.

It's all coming together.

Excited for this season and the future of Rutgers Football.

Go RU!
While I am bullish on coach Schiano I am waiting to see some results. I know his first stint it took him awhile to get the team to a winning record but it will take some time.
