Fair question. I personally believe Kraft has had his guy for at least the last month (I believe it’s Hartline). Yet Terry was clearly in audition mode up until this last week where his body language changed.

The timing of this plus the de-commits doesn’t necessarily lineup unless you take the position that Terry has been completely in the dark. But as a guy who is supposedly our lead recruiter, I’m not sure how you keep him in the dark with current commitments during this transition. Where he wouldn’t catch wind of what was happening sooner. So again, the timeline doesn’t necessarily match.
All fair and I agree we have our coach

I don’t know how anyone could have a qualified opinion that’s not Kraft of who’s in play and who isn’t, that’s the fun of it. Either way, it either shows Kraft was woefully unprepared for this or there’s something no one sees coming.
Rhule was never the plan...not from day one. Rhule begged for the job.
I don't think anything shows he was unprepared. I've said since the beginning the announcement would be next Sunday or Monday. If we hit 12/9 without a coach then you're right but we were never going to have a coach by yesterday

I see him leaving at some point for NFL or just broadcasting. I do not see him staying in the College game.
His health is not good. He could die from his blood clots before he ever announces. He missed a ton of spring and fall practices.

Good Lord, you're such a laughable moron tool - your posing-troll act is beyond old douche. Nobody could be this consistently idiotic and an a-hole at the same time except a posing troll.
I'd be embarrassed if my 14 year old son posted something that immature. You can disagree with someone without the ridiculous amount of name calling.

Another BIG NO to Him.
I'd take Heupel though he's similar to James
He's young(er)...did make a playoff and is an offensive minded coach. Bad year this year but Nico leaving at the last second created some chaos and they still managed to win the games they should have...blown out by Vandy is a bad way to end it though

Rhule begged for the job.

Yes he did. I thought I was the only one who remembered that. He went on and on gushing over Penn State in that press conference. He didn't come right out and say please hire me, but it was as close as you could get.

All it takes is Chesney or Hartline to take this job after this week and that would settle down the madness. We are still just worried that Kraft could end up making a terrible pick. At least he didn't give it to Terry Smith, who had an actual chance to win the job but showed he wasn't really cut out for it. Too nice and still too many game management mistakes like Franklin.

Not to be Debbie Downer here, but the reality is that the moment the games ended on Saturday, all these kids (particularly the high end ones) who plan on entering the portal already had their people contacting other schools trying to make their deals. This is a critical week, for both national signing day as well as the transfer portal, if we don't have a coach in the next day or so, our entire team next year will be made up with kids who couldn't make it in other schools and had no other options but to come to Penn State.
Portal panic can be cured.
Just read on.

If Kraft agreed to wait a week so to not hurt feelings at JMU, then he’s not qualified to be the AD at PSU, cause that’s absolutely insane, which i highly doubt that’s the case. Signing day is Wednesday, if Chesney is the hire then he starts immediately. This is Penn State for godsake. Ohio State would never think like this.

I think Heupel is a solid coach as I’ve said before, but….If you drag the search out for 6 weeks and disintegrate the class and roster and come up with Heupel I have lost confidence in Kraft.

I do hope everyone who bitched about Franklin nonstop really enjoys how bad this may get. You all deserve it.
I called out James when necessary. But any pain I feel now is worth it not to watch another underachieving Penn State team.

Yeah, might not be a huge fan of Josh, but if you could get the defense right, he has great recruits at WR in particular.
I don't love Heupel but would be fine with him. Probably closer to lateral from Franklin than I'd like, but he at least wins against ranked opponents sometimes.

However, if it is really this late in the game that we are interviewing someone than it's a big black mark against Kraft.

I still totally wouldn’t close the book on Jeff Hafley. He has a connection to Kraft. I know he is being mentioned for NFL HC jobs but also spent a bunch of time at the college level. Left BC because of NIL issues.

I think the interviews have been done for a few days. Most likely a few straggler coaches like Heupel feeling like they missed the boat and are trying to get their extensions.

There’s been “insiders” who have said it’s definitely not Chesney, but I’m still holding out hope. JMU has about a 1% chance to make the playoff and Chesney probably wants to coach them if they do. Either Kraft has some agreement with Chesney to coach their playoff game if they make it or Kraft will go with his fallback option (Hartline). Announcement will be made next Sunday/Monday after playoff teams are set. I know absolutely nothing, just my guess.

No hate here but fallback isn't the right term for Hartline if it's him. Well maybe...Elko was the plan

Most are guessing. Jon Sauber (CDT) and Audrey Snyder (ex-Atlantic) discussed the coaching search on their latest podcast and reported that everything they know from within Lasch is off the record. But both claimed it was not a coordinator. Misdirection? Maybe. But I doubt it.

If there actually is a coach in tow it was never going to be a coordinator. By the way I'm not convinced anyone is in tow at this point. Not becoming a doubter in Kraft but funny things can happen on the way to the signing table. Seems to me that all the power 4 fan favs HC's are off the table.

With all these insiders how has the name of the new head coach been kept such a secret?
At the end of the day someone will have guessed right!

It's changed literally everyday.

Rhule, Urban, then Hartline, then Elko, then Drink, then Key, then Deboer, Sitake, Riley, - and now Heupel.

I've been quick to trash Kraft during this process because it seemed like we were getting turned down left and right. But what if we only offered it to Elko? Who's to say any of these are just smoke screens. Drink said he never even interviewed. On Saturday, there were insiders claiming Deboer was a done deal.

All these other teams have announced their coach - we have not. So either our new coach is still playing in a CCG or the CFP, or Kraft truly hasn't offered it to someone yet. I'm going to choose to think our guy is still playing and there's been an agreement that we wouldnt go public until next week or the week after. Doesn't seem like Kraft gives a **** about the 2026 class.

Was the context that we have a confirmed coach? and we just can't go public yet?

It’s certainly confusing right now. Either we have a coach IDed and are waiting to announce it or those saying Kraft botched this are correct.

If they have someone and are waiting on the announcement, then I hope the hire is worth it.

Completely agree on this statement... tough to get a top HC when he already starts behind the chains (although portal does lessen this)
