At this point give me Drink or go with Chesney. Never thought we would make an apparent home run hire. Hopefully the double hire turns out to be a home run.

Elko just signed new contract. Moves him into top five.
Yep, it was all a huge fantasy that we would get one of the three SEC playoff coaches. People will blame Kraft but the new playoff schedule is not conducive to hiring a tier your coach and quite frankly, we are overestimating our ability to compete on salary. I’ve said the whole time it would be a best of the rest non-playoff coach. I’m relatively happy if this works out:

Our insiders are spewing things out of their *** right now for views and listens.

Texas A&M insiders said all along his agent was playing the game because Elko was in extension talks with the AD.

And look what happened.

Kraft seemingly never had a plan. And we’re about to settle for an extremely high risk candidate or a candidate that is probably another James Franklin or a slight downgrade. This wasn’t the year to go coach searching unless you had an in.

Welcome to Florida, USC, Nebraska, Auburn, etc.
What insiders? There aren't any

If you want to die on that hill, then sure. You win. Franklin is gone. Paterno is gone. Can we all agree to stop looking backwards now?
Sure.

But the convo draws from my discussion with another person, not the user I’m disagreeing with. He chimed in on that, talk to him.

Golesh was reported by several to be an actual candidate at PSU (and Florida), but USF is losing to Navy thus far. Our horrendous luck during our own season is poisoning our coaching candidates as well. 🤪
At this point, it looks like Drink is in the lead at PSU. Based on what Tengwell said a few weeks ago, there is some interest in Diaz as well. Key is still working to a degree as well as a candidate. From other sources it looks like Hartline is super interested, but there’s real hesitancy on our side to give it to him with zero experience. OSU itself has been very slow to give him more duties at the coordinator level.

It’s ok, even the ones who seem to have leveraged for extensions are losing too. Brohm last night and Elko today down 17.

Joepa 12-11 Iowa Joepa 6-10 Michigan, Franklin 5-3 Iowa Frankin 4-7 Michigan

Pat Kraft might get fired before he even hires a coach. This is turning into a mess - how can your top targets be winning coaches at equal to better programs?

James Franklin to Eli Drinkwitz? Might as well start recruiting the next coach now because we’ll be right back to this place in four years.

At this point, you have to go Chesney or Hartline to at least make it seem like you’re hiring off potential.

Woof Kraft.
As long as Franklin is gone and it not Rhule its a win. Who is Franklin going to cry about not playing every year at V-tech Virginia and UNC?

You think Eli Drinkwitz is an upgrade from James Franklin?

I’m willing to bet Kraft and Drinkwitz are both fired within 3-4 years.

I’d be happy with him, but not totally overjoyed. In the SEC Missouri is historically at a level of a Purdue or Minnesota. What he has done there has been pretty amazing. Yes he has a similar poor record verse elite teams, but I think he would do much better here with more resources and a different conference.

Hmm. Welcome to what some of us have been saying from the day Franklin was fired. You only fire him if you have a plan and a possible sure fire hire in your back pocket. Kraft may have committed professional suicide out of pride. Pride comes before the fall. It did for Franklin, it may soon for Kraft.

If you want to die on that hill, then sure. You win. Franklin is gone. Paterno is gone. Can we all agree to stop looking backwards now?
Sure as soon as the haters stop beating the dead Franklin horse. I am taking a wait and see attitude to the new hire but Kraft put himself on the spot with his comments about why he fired Franklin. I listened to his conference where he went on and on about the qualities the new head coach will have. The only thing he left out was walks on water.

So...after all the incredible, fantastic, amazing bluster and hulla balloon...Penn State fired James Franklin...for an even worse version of James Franklin.

Sad.

Stole this from another poster in a previous thread

Someone on BSD did an interesting statistical analysis on talent vs winning percentage by all head coaches over the past 10 years. The list below (and also at the link provided) shows WET values (Wins Exceeding Talent) for all notable coaches. Not perfectly apples to apples for everybody but still an interesting comparison. The original BSD post is at the link so you can read about how the numbers were calculated. From highest to lowest WET and WET per 12 game average:

  • Kirk Ferentz 26.20 2.44
  • Nick Saban 19.57 1.99
  • Dabo Swinney 17.44 1.53
  • Curt Cignetti 16.45 6.37
  • Lane Kiffin 15.78 1.84
  • Matt Campbell 14.70 1.40
  • Kirby Smart 14.69 1.45
  • Eli Drinkwitz 13.84 2.18
  • Jeff Brohm 11.21 1.33
  • Brian Kelly 10.29 1.04
  • Lincoln Reilly 8.59 0.95
  • Billy Napier 8.01 1.07
  • Mike Elko 7.13 1.94
  • James Franklin 6.49 0.60
  • Bob Chesney 6.05 4.03
  • Brent Key 4.37 1.34
  • Marcus Freeman 3.57 0.95
  • Matt Rhule 0.69 0.09
  • Kenny Dillingham -0.13 - 0.05
  • Manny Diaz -0.22 -0.05
  • Alex Golesh -0.61 -0.33
  • Sean Lewis -1.48 -0.27
  • Clark Lea -2.13 -0.49
  • Brent Pry -4.90 - 1.51
  • Mike Norvell -5.05 - 0.96

Does anyone else not really give a damn who they hire? The whole thing is a crapshoot. Some candidates appear good, some don't
That’s where I’m at.
Good coaches out there who could win at Penn State, good ones who would win there less than others, etc.

Total crapshoot. But it will be interesting this offseason and then next year, that’s for sure.
