LMAO, the reality is that Franklin Finished Top 12 in the Final CFP Rankings 7 of the last 10 seasons even if you include this year (not 5 of 10 including this year as the post you responded to stated). The chances the "next head coach" gets to 1, let alone 7, over the next 10 years is remote. But you keep telling us how easy it is to finish Top 12 in the Final CFP Rankings 70% of the time - it's so easy, that's the reason only like 6 programs nationally accomplished it over the last decade and only PSU and duhO$U out of the b1g teams to do it (including the new ex-PAC10 teams). It's just so easy to do - some of you tools are so absurd it's beyond laughable.
James, you can stop posting, Va Tech hired you!

Recruiting to ISU has to be one of the hardest jobs in all of power 4 football. The guy has done way much more with less that's for sure. He has been at the top of the list for a lot of searches at big schools and just chose not to leave. He doesn't seem to be motivated by money or notoriety. He really does seem to be quite happy where he is.
It can't be harder than recruiting to Indiana. And as mentioned, he was able to recruit a starting NFL QB and RB on the same team and couldn't do better than 9-3. He's no better than Franklin. I had to admit that I was wrong about him about 5 years ago.

I should not have watched the press conference with Terry Smith. I almost want to give him the job at this point! Here’s a man that really loves PSU. Let’s play a reality in which he is given the job. At this point you keep Knowles. Who is the OC? Terry is not going to bankrupt the budget, so you have big money to spend on a big-time OC.
I will say this about Terry, he has immediately identified lingering problems like a defense too complicated, that doesnt blitz, an O line that really needed to be challenged, and pushing the ball downfield in the pass game. Now, these are not revelatory concepts to a fan of the program under Franklin, but being honest about them and showing pretty stark improvements in all categories has been very refreshing.

A pretty harsh takedown of the PSU process, and a plug for Campbell.

Pate, like the rest of the media, don't think penn state should aspire to something better, ever. Now if OSU's coach lost the 3 games Franklin did, even Pate would call for his head.

Also cut down on the trick plays that didn't work like last year.

Wow. I would be super annoyed if I was an Ile Miss fan.

I have never been to Baton Rouge. I was at Ole Miss in September for a game. Oxford is a nice small college town. Closest bigger city would be Memphis, TN (North of Oxford, about 70 miles?).
My son & his friends attended LSU vs Bama game a few years ago on Baton Rouge. Said it wasn't a very nice town but loved the tail gating and stadium atmosphere on campus.

I now see that it was Clay Travis that said that about Kiffin’s family taking those trips. Maybe it is true, but Travis is not exactly the shining pillar of integrity.

If true, pretty bold stand by Ole Miss. They know if he's set on leaving they have get to work on a new hire.

I don’t think they’ll be able to do better; Ole Miss was always going to be a stop on the Lane Kiffin ‘rebuilding the brand’ tour after Alabama OC and FAU. Remember he flamed out in Tennessee and USC.

Probably not but they have to get a coach quickly and perhaps Golesh, Key, or Lea would be interested. Man, how low life would it be if Kiffin left Ole Miss before the Egg Bowl and CFP.

It’s like people didn’t live through the 2011 shitstorm. Now, that was the program version of DEFCON 1. Yes, we’ll probably lose some current players and recruits with the loss of Vince Lombardi, but the dramatically different team restocking environment via the portal means these losses can be quickly mitigated. We’ll make a good hire and life will go on. Kids want a big stage - we’ve got one of the biggest and we’re in Big Media’s backyard.

If I were Kiffin, I would not go to LSU. That is a mess with them involved in litigation regarding the Kelley contract and the governor's interference. I wouldn't trust that group.
I hear you, but it’s very possible Kiffin could win a national championship at LSU, despite the current mess and cast of duplicitous characters there.

Kids want to play in the National Playoff and have a shot at playing for the whole enchilada - that is the "big stage". Your dreaming if you think kids are going to be flocking to play at PSU, especially given the names left on the list after all the contract extensions (latest being Elko). Laughable that all these elite NIL Portal X-Fers are going to chose PSU over duhO$U, Indiana, aTm, UGa..... etc, etc, etc.....

PSU has just obliterated their 2026 roster and put it completely in the wind and the only shot any new $12 million a year man will have is to bring people he has already recruited and tie their success to him, with him.

People are acting like this is our parent's generation or something. Today's 64 is like last generation's 50. Cignetti could easily coach another 10 years and quite a bit longer if motivated. Take a look at him - he looks quite healthy and energetic for a 64 year old - he does not look like an "old man" at all.
I know a coach who coached into his 80s, and won a Big Championship in his 80s.

"He hasn't had the talent to beat top ten teams until he gets to Penn State"...

Geez, trying to think of the last coach who was given that lame excuse...oh that's right JAMES FRANKLIN.

Drinkwitz is a complete failure of a hire. Kraft is officially on the clock. 3 years MAX

The donors didn't fire Franklin to hire an almost identical version of him again
Yes I can hear the excuses now. “Missou doesn’t have the talent to compete with conference teams with winning records —>”We don’t have the talent to compete with OSU and Michigan”

I don't understand how so many of you keep saying this is a mess? What did you expect, we hire Saban one day after firing Franklin? PSU is not a top 5 job in college football, it's borderline top 10. We were never going to have a line of elite coaches at the door to Kraft's office begging for the job, and there are only 3-4 elite coaches out there to begin with. I don't get the outrage at all, from day one you all should have expected this search to take until December and with all of the other opening should have expected a lot of coaches staying put but leveraging the openings for new contracts. This is going exactly as one would expect.
Exactly coaching searches are hard. Also it’s right in the middle of the season which is a terrible time. It’s hard for any team. Even the 1-5 teams.

But winning 10 games in the Big Ten is easy because all the teams are so bad, so no, the new coach’s floor is 10 wins in the first season.
I missed it…how many Big10 games did Franklin win this year? Best roster ever and he managed three unimpressive wins against high school teams.

I do not think it will be to "stick it" to Penn State, but he wants to be successful and he knows PSU players because he helped recruit them. For all his faults James was a players coach (more than many appreciated) and a relationship guy. I would be surprised if several of the younger DMV players and several staff do not follow him to VT.
You mean the players who could not beat UCLA (with 48 hours to prepare)? Mighty Northwestern at home? Yeah, we’ll be fine.

Baton Rouge is an arm pit - even for Louisiana.

Is Drink an upgrade to Franklin?

It's really feeling dire right now as far as the search is concerned - Kraft talked a huge game in his presser after Franklin's firing, and it doesn't seem like this job is all that attractive to anyone of note. Coming into this search, Drink was like the 5-6 option. What's his signature win at Mizzou? What's his highest finish in the SEC?

This is really starting to feel like end of the Kraft era as well.
I’d think of it less of what is perceived as an upgrade more that a change is needed. We weren’t going past the next step with JF. 12 years, it ran its course, who is to say Drink or another candidate isn’t better. After all, Franklin came from Vandy and wasn’t a considered a home run tier coach. Whoever the next guy is should be given his shot. It was time, whether it works out or not with the next guy. A risk needed to be taken.

They were great back in the day, but time has way passed them bye.

IMO Fran Ganter was one of if not the best OC's in PS history in his day. He was also the best RB recruiter and RB coach PS has ever had. He was called by ESPN as the brightest young coach in college football when he was OC. Then cancer happened on the coaching staff, and the rest is history. Probably shouldn't have reopened that can of worms.

Fran knew the game.
