Claude Rains.I might be late to the party on this one, but a mystery candidate has interviewed.

I would say they would gladly take him back.Dumb question: Does washington want DeBoer back?

Its his job right now to figure out what the F he's doing. If you’re right it’s almost worst that you would hire Smith or Chesney without reaching out to Cignetti. Not really the gotcha comment you thought it was, isn’t it’s Krafts job to attempt to hire the best in the country if available.
According to you the PSU job is not a top 5 job. You then expect coaches to be lining up for the job.Penn State isn’t a top 5 job in the country. Hiring Terry Smith or Chesney proves that. Similar to IU wasn’t a top 5 job when they poached Cignetti from JMU. You can’t attempt to hire Cignetti, fail then hire his replacement at JMU and call yourself at Top 5 program. Hiring Smith just proves you’re not serious, you didn’t have any serious candidates and it’s a easy scapegoat in a attempt to avoid national embarrassment of striking out on every major candidate.
The emotional fan was right. You have no idea who was interviewed.Another emotional Penn State fan who can’t handle an ounce of objectivity and has to resort to personal attacks.
You seem awfully thin skinned, maybe check into some counselingAnother emotional Penn State fan who can’t handle an ounce of objectivity and has to resort to personal attacks.
You're right. They'd forgive him.Betrayal ain’t what it used to be.

Just like you don't know but that has not stopped you from passing judgement on results that haven't even happened. How do you know this? You have no idea how many options Kraft has. How do you know what options are legitimate? You have zero idea how long this search is going to take.
I’m convinced you’re retarded. I’m sorry I said bad things about Terry Smith. Accept my apology?Just like you don't know but that has not stopped you from passing judgement on results that haven't even happened.
You are the dipchit that had PSU hiring rhule.I’m convinced you’re retarded. I’m sorry I said bad things about Terry Smith. Accept my apology?

Depending on who you believe, the new coach search will never end. It’s going to be a sad day when PSU finally hires a new coach and this thread has to end.
THIS! When I see that the guy everyone seems to be chasing is none other than...Lane Kiffin...I mean, sit back for a second and really think about that. Yeah, Elko is doing a great job, but he's not in play, apparently. Apparently Meyer has no interest either. DeBoer is probably the best that may be in play...may be...but he's probably taking Bama to the playoffs. When I saw posts drooling over guys like Lea (Vandy, getting Franklin flashbacks), Campbell (Iowa State...really?), Drinkwitz (Mizzou...really?), or some other "flavor of the week," I'm thinking, you're really anxious to pay these guys over $10 million per year when they're not sniffing the playoffs at their school...again, really? Then there is Chesney. Guys hoping that Penn State can be like Indiana. I guess we've gotten that desperate. It doesn't help that it seems to be a pretty weak candidate pool.
What if the candidate pool at Penn State any given year will be about what it is this year?THIS! I'm moving into the "hire Terry Smith" camp. No point in shooting the moon for, as you put it, "a pretty weak candidate pool." Who's to say that Terry can't do a better job than any of the other guys?

It was foolishness. What happened to all the talk about Hartline? Hardly gets a mention anymore.

OK, that's the trophy. From the pic, I thought it was an HVAC unit with an analog telephone on the shelf next to it. Big Prize Indeed!Exactly...
HAHA best description I have heard. It‘s like looking around the bar every night when you walk in thinking what a bunch of losers.
The only three I can think of that would be worth throwing big money at are: Elko (no longer available, contract extended), Meyer (indicated not interested), and DeBoer (maybe available, but still at Bama until they lose in the playoffs). Beyond that, Chesney is probably going to get chased as the next Cignetti, and he will probably be an expensive "get" for no P4 experience. SRURock mentioned the DC at Georgia, name escapes me at the moment, might be worth pursuing him - how much money, who knows? There is also Hartline, but the question there is, can he elevate Penn State to OSU level all by himself? People will say, "but Lane Kiffin" - thing is, you look at his record, and he hasn't exactly lit it up (why some people seem to value him so highly is beyond me).Who would be in a good candidate pool by your definition?
In my experience most people are offended by being called retarded. Why are you so angry? You need counseling.
Terry is a terrific assistant coach. He's universally respected by fans and players. But Kraft would be signing his own death warrant by firing Franklin for not taking the next program step, conducing a public national search for the coach to do that, and then hiring Franklin's long-time assistant as permanent HC.The only three I can think of that would be worth throwing big money at are: Elko (no longer available, contract extended), Meyer (indicated not interested), and DeBoer (maybe available, but still at Bama until they lose in the playoffs). The only guys out there with playoff experience are Day, Saban, Meyer, and Smart. Well, there is Dabo, too, but his stock has dropped. I guess there's also Les Miles/Ed Orgeron, but...well, no. Probably the best reason to go after DeBoer, since he has playoff experience even though he lost. Thing is, Day ain't leaving, Smart ain't leaving, Saban's retired, and we've gone over Meyer.
Bottom line is, I don't see anyone out there worth throwing big bucks at that have a great shot at improving on Franklin's record - so why not go with Terry Smith, who actually worked under Franklin and bleeds blue and white? Not that I liked Franklin that much, mind you - but I like Terry better than Franklin.
Seems like it's all about money, but I don't think you can just throw money at it and solve the problem. I guess at this point I'd be happier with 9-3 under Terry than 9-3 under the other guys - unless you can get DeBoer.![]()
I find it hard to believe Freeman would leave ND unless it was for his alma mater, Ohio State.Chesney up to 39% now. #2 now is also a huge surprise - Marcus Freeman with a projected 26% chance. Here's the most recent link:

Not to mention the fact that a guy like Chesney who is already a head coach has a bunch of return eligible starters coming back from a team that is 10-1 and has 20 HS commits so far.Terry is a terrific assistant coach. He's universally respected by fans and players. But Kraft would be signing his own death warrant by firing Franklin for not taking the next program step, conducing a public national search for the coach to do that, and then hiring Franklin's long-time assistant as permanent HC.
Beyond the obvious "insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results" arguments, the politics of hiring Smith are completely untenable for Kraft. Hiring anyone from outside gives him more maneuverability and leeway in the coming years. He may still miss but he saw a change was needed and swung big. That's a far better position to be in as a leader than making a rash decision then back pedaling to a form of status quo.
Besides, Frankllin would raid the staff and bully Smith and Co around for 3-4 years. That's an even worse look, IMO.
