I have stated this before, but I believe Chesney has superstar potential. Im sure he could bring a bunch of players and recruits with him, but are they BIG caliber? I guess they could fill out the roster till Chesney can get recruiting going, if nothing else. Not to mention the fact that a guy like Chesney who is already a head coach has a bunch of return eligible starters coming back from a team that is 10-1 and has 20 HS commits so far.
Then we realize we're in the bar alone, and we're looking in the mirror. It‘s like looking around the bar every night when you walk in thinking what a bunch of losers.
In my experience most people are offended by being called retarded.
Los if great candidates - many with significant upside and most with high floors. There might be NFL guys too.The only three I can think of that would be worth throwing big money at are: Elko (no longer available, contract extended), Meyer (indicated not interested), and DeBoer (maybe available, but still at Bama until they lose in the playoffs). Beyond that, Chesney is probably going to get chased as the next Cignetti, and he will probably be an expensive "get" for no P4 experience. SRURock mentioned the DC at Georgia, name escapes me at the moment, might be worth pursuing him - how much money, who knows? There is also Hartline, but the question there is, can he elevate Penn State to OSU level all by himself? People will say, "but Lane Kiffin" - thing is, you look at his record, and he hasn't exactly lit it up (why some people seem to value him so highly is beyond me).
The only guys out there with playoff experience are Day, Saban, Meyer, and Smart. Well, there is Dabo, too, but his stock has dropped. I guess there's also Les Miles/Ed Orgeron, but...well, no. Probably the best reason to go after DeBoer, since he has playoff experience even though he lost. Thing is, Day ain't leaving, Smart ain't leaving, Saban's retired, and we've gone over Meyer.
Bottom line is, I don't see anyone out there worth throwing big bucks at that have a great shot at improving on Franklin's record - so why not go with Terry Smith, who actually worked under Franklin and bleeds blue and white? Not that I liked Franklin that much, mind you - but I like Terry better than Franklin.
Seems like it's all about money, but I don't think you can just throw money at it and solve the problem. I guess at this point I'd be happier with 9-3 under Terry than 9-3 under the other guys - unless you can get DeBoer.![]()
Kraft's plans for signing day and more.Urban Meyer for 10 million per year for as long as he wants to stay.. Hire Hartline as the OC and the next head coach in waiting.
winners win
Freeman is believed to be the "complete surprise" candidate by at least one group of guys (the 247 Sports Team), and as of yesterday hadn't given a definitive "No" according to them.Chesney up to 39% now. #2 now is also a huge surprise - Marcus Freeman with a projected 26% chance. Here's the most recent link:

I really cant see that happening. Unless some behind the scenes stuff is going on at ND. My guess is he is fishing for a raise.Freeman is believed to be the "complete surprise" candidate by at least one group of guys (the 247 Sports Team), and as of yesterday hadn't given a definitive "No" according to them.
Exactly. Hard to tell right now.I really cant see that happening. Unless some behind the scenes stuff is going on at ND. My guess is he is fishing for a raise.
Clicking on the Kalshi link, Freeman's odds have dropped dramatically. Still at a 10% chance though. Right now, it's Chesney, then DeBoer and Drinkwitz virtually tied for 2nd, then Freeman, then Brent Key and Terry Smith tied.I really cant see that happening. He hates Franklin so much he wants to take over here and take us to a Natty as the biggest FU to Franklin possible. What would you have him do? He is working hard and trying to land one of the premier coaches in the game. If Freeman says no and gets a raise that’s the breaks of the game. You have to try! You don’t not court a top coach out of fear the other school will give him a raise. The latest player in Krafty The Clown's "Come on down, you're the next contestant in 'Let Krafty The Clown get you a big raise and contract extension'....."
It’s really tough to be a college football fan anymore. It’s all so scummy. He was the Mystery interview.

I'm starting to lean in that direction as well, although I'd still like to see Terry Smith get the nod. I wouldn't want to be in Kraft's shoes, making that choice. Still would like to see Kalen DeBoer get the nod, but I don't see it happening. It's hard to believe when this started out, I thought Kenny Chesney didn't have much of a chance. Now it looks like he may be the best candidate who may actually take it. I know it's Bob Chesney, but when this started I really didn't know who this guy was at all. I hope he gets it and brings in a nice crop from the JMU Hoosier factory.
Yup. There have been several long shot candidates but Kraft still has to follow through and do his due diligence to make sure he’s getting the best guy possible. And even if he KNOWS someone isn’t truly interested in the job, Kraft can still learn something by talking to that person. What would you have him do? If Terry were given the job, there isn't some guarantee that he will keep the roster together. In fact, several of the players holding the signs after the game will still leave if he is hired.Coach Sparkle ain't coming.
Coach Smith needs to be working the phones, fixing this mess.
Make it happen Mr. Kraft.

It’s not even the players as much as it is the coaches for me.Yeah, CFB has largely been turned into a bunch of fake-student professional mercenaries......
I won't say I'm "all in" on Chesney, but this is my sentiment as well. I'd rather swing for the fences with the risk of striking out and starting over in 2-3 years at this point. I don't want another guy who is going to keep PSU in upper middling status for 8-10 years. If Terry were given the job, there isn't some guarantee that he will keep the roster together. I'm all in on Chesney at this point. I firmly believe he has a high ceiling. I also realize he could be a complete flop, but chances need to be taken.
I agree, but I'm not sure Terry will be capable of that. If he is given the job, which I don't think he will be, I feel support him the same way I would any other coach, but I think he would be in way over his head.I don't want another guy who is going to keep PSU in upper middling status for 8-10 years.

Glenn Schumann is the DC at Georgia, and would be fine as a candidate from Day 1 if they weren't insistent on hiring sitting HCs.The only three I can think of that would be worth throwing big money at are: Elko (no longer available, contract extended), Meyer (indicated not interested), and DeBoer (maybe available, but still at Bama until they lose in the playoffs). Imagine if you could see Krafts dream list the day Franklin was fired. Where is Chesney on that list? 9th? 10th? I won’t even entertain if Terry Smith was on that list lol Atleast if he hires Chesney he can save his job with an attempt at hiring an up and coming coach. If Terry Paterno gets the job, Kraft is going down with the ship.
Matt Rhule is the next head coach. He’s known that since the Notre Dame game.
I’m living rent free in your head.you are the expert. Tell us the list.
One thing though - if JMU makes the playoffs, does Chesney still coach JMU?
Such is life during a coaching search. You dont know which coach will fit which scenario. Chesney could keep the team in middling status for 8 years too. Chesney could also strikeout or he could be great and then leave psu for an SEC job.
