Unless he has no interest in going back to Florida or going to LSU or one of the lesser schools that have an opening. At the same time, makes you wonder why, in a season with a lot of top 25 jobs open (4?), he hasn’t been hired yet. Least it makes me wonder, but cycle isn’t over yet.
Honestly he has no choice and that’s his own doing. All Terry Smith had to do as Interim HC was right the ship until the new HC got announced. He’s turned this into a very public decision with his theatrics. Now the new HC whoever that is will now inherit a divided lockeroom and fan base with the portal opening looming. Now the new HC will be left scrambling to retain current players and decommits. All these actions directly benefited TS in an attempt to force the public to get the job for him. Program be damned. I feel for whoever takes this job, the fallout of treating three mediocre wins like their playoff games will be felt.If Penn State doesn’t hire Terry Smith, does he head to Blacksburg?

Seems logical. Franklin would likely offer him a very nice contract and possibly a coordinator job. If successful as a coordinator, he would become a potential future head coach candidate for other programs. This would be the worst case scenario for PSU as they would pillage the current PSU team unless the PSU hire is a home run.If Penn State doesn’t hire Terry Smith, does he head to Blacksburg?

Theatrics? He is coaching the team and the team supports him. He earned their respect and trust. He wants the job and believes he is the best person to do the job. What do you expect him to do?Honestly he has no choice and that’s his own doing. All Terry Smith had to do as Interim HC was right the ship until the new HC got announced. Almost certainly. If Penn State doesn’t hire Terry Smith, does he head to Blacksburg?

Yes theatrics. You don’t think the Pin was a very thought and logical decision. After the Nebraska win he made it very clear that you can see his resume on display in real time. He conveniently left out he’s now 0-2 vs Top Ten teams and 2-3 on the season with a Top 15 roster and a preseason top 5 team. Of course he wants the job why wouldnt he? To me it’s very clear he’s leveraging the same fan base that called for JF’s head to help him secure the position.Theatrics? He is coaching the team and the team supports him. He earned their respect and trust. He wants the job and believes he is the best person to do the job. What do you expect him to do?
If he placates the masses and it doesn’t work out, they’ll hate him just the same. People have short memories, and if he hires their choice and it fizzles, they’ll still blame him for making him interim in the first place because it fooled them. That's the exact scenario interview that got Urban Legend turned down.
Unless there is an Out of the Box or out of Left Field hire put your money on Terry Smith. Bigtime Doners, admin people as in Bendapudi, Big Name Alums, and the general fan base seems to add up to Terry Smith.
At this point If Kraft wants someone from the outside, he will be between a rock and a hard place. Either way he chooses to go several groups are not going to be happy with him. But if he gives the people groups mentioned what they want and it doesn't work out he has the fallback of it wasn't his fault because he gave them what they clamored for.
On the other hand, no matter what he does the National Media will grind his stones. Why should he care about them because they have always been the enemy of PS. Nothing new there so just do the logical thing.

Dave WannstedtFWIW Pate said earlier tonight there is a coaches name affiliated with the search that if he gave people 15 guesses they wouldn’t get it right. Said this guy would definitely turn heads and shock people although he doesn’t think it is a good fit.

Aside from that, many of the players campaigning for him now will still leave if he's hired. You can’t let the players run the asylum and few serious PSU fans I know think he’s the best candidate to lead the team into the future.
And many of them that are campaigning are graduating, so why do we care if they want him or not?Aside from that, many of the players campaigning for him now will still leave if he's hired.
What if Kraft gets the hell out of here and doesn't even make this decision? If I was him, that's what I'd be wanting to do. This is pretty much a no win situation for him now.
As for who to hire for the coach, today it still seems like it's Chesney time, which is not even close to what we had our hopes up for when this all started.
Any coaching hire is going to have people that like it and people that don’t. What matters is if they’re successful. If they’re not, the AD will get crushed for it regardless of who they hired. Kraft has to hire the candidate he thinks will win the most and hope it works out. He shouldn’t allow outside forces to make the decision for him. What if Kraft gets the hell out of here and doesn't even make this decision? If I was him, that's what I'd be wanting to do. I was with you til you used a Tomlinism. Lol. As a 48 year Steeler fan so ready for him to go.And many were leaving regardless.
Let them go. Volunteers not hostages, lots of really good ballplayers would love to be at Penn State.
I am not endorsing Smith but your argument that hiring him is insanity by doing the same thing and expecting different results. is comical. Perhaps you missed the difference in the way the team played since Franklin was fired. Several posters have been critical of promoting an assistant coach must have missed how well Smart is doing at Georgia. Do you think Penn State made a mistake by hiring an assistant coach named Paterno who, unlike Smith, never coached a game before he was promoted. Again, I am not endorsing Smith.Terry is a terrific assistant coach. He's universally respected by fans and players. But Kraft would be signing his own death warrant by firing Franklin for not taking the next program step, conducing a public national search for the coach to do that, and then hiring Franklin's long-time assistant as permanent HC.
Beyond the obvious "insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results" arguments, the politics of hiring Smith are completely untenable for Kraft. Hiring anyone from outside gives him more maneuverability and leeway in the coming years. He may still miss but he saw a change was needed and swung big. That's a far better position to be in as a leader than making a rash decision then back pedaling to a form of status quo.
Besides, Frankllin would raid the staff and bully Smith and Co around for 3-4 years. That's an even worse look, IMO.
Same! But it’s a euphemism that predates Mike, and it applies to so many things.I was with you til you used a Tomlinism. Lol. As a 48 year Steeler fan so ready for him to go.
That’s it?Kraft's plans for signing day and more.

Penn State Commit Reveals What he Learned From Pat Kraft | NSN
UNIVERSITY PARK-- It's not often a recruit-- even a top-end one-- gets to meet with a Big Ten athletic director, but Penn State commitnittanysportsnow.com
But of course that’s itHe hates Franklin so much he wants to take over here and take us to a Natty as the biggest FU to Franklin possible. Lol sarcasm intended
Or maybe you have a plan before you fire Franklin? Maybe he does; we’ll find out soon. What would you have him do? He is working hard and trying to land one of the premier coaches in the game. If Freeman says no and gets a raise that’s the breaks of the game. You have to try! You don’t not court a top coach out of fear the other school will give him a raise.
Did I miss something or did Kraft put himself in this position?I'm starting to lean in that direction as well, although I'd still like to see Terry Smith get the nod. I wouldn't want to be in Kraft's shoes, making that choice. Still would like to see Kalen DeBoer get the nod, but I don't see it happening.
If Chesney gets it, maybe they can get Kenny Chesney to sing the Alma Mater and National Anthem at (Bob) Chesney's first game as coach!
One thing though - if JMU makes the playoffs, does Chesney still coach JMU?

If that is true, he very well could be a flop, but he has tremendous upside and there is no such thing as a "homerun hire" for as right now, so I'm fully onboard.Mark Lesko podcast right now is live. They're saying it's Chesney. Done deal.
I love it, but I imagine most people here don't.
The Smart comparison is not entirely valid. He was a DC for Saban who was hired fromI am not endorsing Smith but your argument that hiring him is insanity by doing the same thing and expecting different results. is comical. This is exactly where fear of failure comes into play. Make your move and if it doesn't work out, f it. Move on and start againThat's the exact scenario interview that got Urban Legend turned down.

And you know that several of the players holding the Hire Terry Smith signs will leave if he is hired HOW? Geez.If Terry were given the job, there isn't some guarantee that he will keep the roster together. In fact, several of the players holding the signs after the game will still leave if he is hired.
I'm all in on Chesney at this point. I firmly believe he has a high ceiling. I also realize he could be a complete flop, but chances need to be taken.
Well unless Kraft gets his you know what in gear and hires a coach before December 3rd, the new coach ain’t replacing Franklin’s verbal recruits with anyone else.I'm not so certain we absolutely "need" to keep our James Franklin 2026 recruiting class together. Let's allow our new coach to recruit players who can win big games against Oregon, Ohio State, and Michigan: The other classes basically were just good enough to lose to them every year. Fresh start sounds good: We lose a bunch of 3 and 4 stars, so maybe we replace them with different ones who might even be better
Was there even a list when he fired Franklin? I guess we will find out.Imagine if you could see Krafts dream list the day Franklin was fired. Where is Chesney on that list? 9th? 10th? I won’t even entertain if Terry Smith was on that list lol Atleast if he hires Chesney he can save his job with an attempt at hiring an up and coming coach. If Terry Paterno gets the job, Kraft is going down with the ship.
King is not what comes to mind when I see you never ending posts.I don’t need to explain myself but I’m a gracious King so I will this one time for the JoeBots. This absolutely was Matt Rhules job to lose. I don’t make the rules, Kraft is his twin brother and they love each other. Rhule typically peaks in his 3rd season with a program, miscalculation. Nebraska sucks, forced Krafts hand. Now it’s time for Plan D, Chesney or Smith.
One thing is for certain, there is not one person on this board who has any actual idea about the search for a new coach. It's all BS, rumors, and speculation mixed in with wish list candidates. Its great reading, but not factual.
