I can understand their fans wanting to hire an experienced play-caller. We would be saying the same thing. But, I do think Ty has a lot of potential to become a very good play-caller. He's been getting prepared for this for quite a while at this point.

I really like howle and don't want to lose him. Problem for ty is he spent most of his career prepping with Franklin.

He is going to VTech to run the same lame Franklin offense. Franklin will be stressing EXPLOSIVE plays but the offence won't be able to go one yard on 3rd and 1.

Howle could be Tyler bowen 2.0 at VTech. OL, TE coach. OC

Eh, was he though? Decent enough, sure. But Manny and Allen took it to a whole new level.

Pry had some baffling and frustrating characteristics as our DC - 4th quarter meltdowns, allowing average QBs to go nuclear, playing guys out of position, bizarre substitution patterns, the delayed safety blitzes. I honestly can't remember Manny or Allen having those full blown meltdowns like Pry's squads did - over the past 3-4 seasons, it's been our offense that has let us down in big moments vs defense.

OSU/MSU/USC 4th quarter meltdowns, the Minny game in 2019, Memphis 40+ points, App State, Illinois 7 OL and no adjustments.
It always seemed like the opponents were guaranteed points on their first drives of the second half with Pry running the defense.

Yeah a lot of revisionist history going on in calling Pry a good DC. He was average at best. I’ll never forget 2017 season giving up 34 second half points to a 4-6 Nebraska team who had just announced they fired Mike Reilly. Also the Ohio State come from behinds. Manny came in and put this defense to another level. Id probably prefer Tom Allen over Pry for that matter

If James had not been fired , i think Knowles would have been bought out, Pry would be back as DC, AK probably fired with Howle promoted. Hagans may have been shown the door

Losing Chuck Losey would be a hit to this program. PSU always developed players physically at a very high athletic level.

Unfortunately it is what happens when the HC changes as most coaches bring their strength & conditioning team with them.

Not sure I agree. VTech is a middle of the pack team in a mid conference. They shouldn't have the high expectations.
They are that right now, but some remember the Beamer days and will expect VT to be in the mix for ACC titles. Franklin can get them to that point and maybe pretty quickly. He’ll do a fine job there. The ACC is wide open and he’ll have them competing.

Confirmed. I wonder if Olesh or Reynolds will follow him? Of the three, I want to keep Rapp.best all-round of the three. Lots of movig parts between now and Spring practice.
We have yet to see Olesh. Tough to evaluate him. He was the #1 overall PA recruit in the 2025 class according to 24/7. Very high 4/ almost 5 star TE that Franklin flipped from his Michigan commitment last minute. I’d like to see what the kid has. I hope he sticks around.

Howle and Pry - woof, man. Taking the risk on a first-time play caller and pulling Pry off the heap. Does anyone know what Franklin's staff salary pool is? Seems like he's working on a budget.

Good stuff for Howle. Tough to lose an alum. We'll miss his TE development. Hopefully we can keep Rapp, it's early in their careers but Reynolds and Olesh haven't moved the needle really. Olesh is from PA so it'd be nice to see if he can stick and develop here. Rapp has gotten better as the year went on.
Olesh hasn’t played yet.

A counter for what? Virginia Tech is 2-3 tiers below Penn State. They haven't been relevant in 2 decades. Again, he's going to do well there - but they aren't going to be able to go head to head with PSU, OSU, Michigan, Clemson, Bama, Georgia, etc. with the elite blue chip guys. Franklin wasn't even able to do that in PA at PSU.
I think we should probably understand that recruiting is fluid. Just because a coach shows up in a PSU shirt doesn’t mean the kid is automatically going to go there over VT. As we have seen, Franklin builds relationships with the families, much like Paterno did. The kids stay loyal to him, as we have experienced recently. He will be a factor in recruiting in the DMV. As for the comment on him not being able to get the elite blue chip guys in PA, I’m not really sure what you are referring to? Barkley, Sanders, Parsons, Carter, Olesh, J’Ven Williams, Singleton, Menet, and a few others were considered “elite” recruits out of PA and they, along with some other PA guys, were the backbone of PSU for the last 10 years. Everybody bitched when he lost out on Fleming and Rucci. How did that turn out? PA does not have the depth in talent it used to have. C’mon man. I get it. It’s beat the dead horse here day after day. You hate Franklin. Got it. But if coaches underestimate him with recruiting, he will get his fair share of big recruits at VT. They have invested a lot more into their athletics department too. He’s going to be a challenge to recruit against.

We fired him for a reason and have an upgrade in MC, but do not underestimate his ability to be a thorn in our side recruiting that region. We need some coaching assistants with ties to the high school programs in that region. PA and NJ are not enough for us.
Exactly.

I am fairly sure that Campbell will make at least one hire that can recruit the DMV. It's part of the job at the top level.

He can for sure. Its not like there are teams like OSU and Oregon in the ACC. Is Miami back for sure? Can FSU and Clemson make it back? Pitt? Just seems like a rotation at the top.

Danny O’brien will follow BGJ to VT
I didn’t believe it until I just read Thamel’s post on X. James is really trying to re-create all of this in Blacksburg and do it all over again, probably to try to prove everybody wrong. O’brien ruined Allar. There are strong rumors out there that Hagans is going down there as well. Thank God Kraft had the stones to fire Franklin. I think he’s lost his mind. This is the definition of insanity.

Just reading tea leaves, and seeing which assistant coaches have been removed from iowa state directory. That’s a good indicator of who is coming

OC/TE coach - Taylor Mouser. I do wonder if Campbell makes a splash and gets Scheelhaase as OC or someone else. That would mean Mouser would simply replace Howle

OL - Clanton. This is obvious
RB?? ISU coach still listed in their directory
QB?? Jake Waters turn us down again?
WR- Noah Pauley

DC- Heacock still listed and retweeting ISU stuff. Knowles staying? Don’t want to pay buyout?

DL - ISU coach still listed and tweets ISU stuff. Barnes staying?

LB - Connor staying?

SAF- Deon Broomfield

AHC -Corners - Terry Smith

I think you're really close.

RB: Stan Drayton
QB: A new outsider or Trace Mc. I'll go with outsider.

DC: Knowles (but Campbell will have an understudy on staff for 2027)

OC: Campbell might like and want to keep AK. It will be interesting to see if MC values Taylor Mouser over Andy Kotelnicki. I don't get the Scheelhaase love.

No way he keeps AK. It’s either going to be Mouser, Scheelhaase who used to be his OC before taking an NFL job, or someone else.
