From The CL:
Last spring Tylertown High School head coach Jason Johnson sat down with his top player, quarterback Tyre’oune Holmes, and asked him where he wanted to go.
“I said T-Man, if you could go anywhere you wanted to go, where would you go,” Johnson recalled Thursday. “And he said ‘Coach, I want to go to Mississippi State.”

That dream became a reality Thursday when Holmes finally got a long desired scholarship offer from Mississippi State and quickly accepted. It was an exciting moment for Holmes and the Tylertown football program.
“It worked out really well for him,” Johnson said. “Coach Hughes has always had a special place with him and that’s the coach that recruited him. I’m really excited for T-Man. You always want a kid to go to the college he wants to go to.”
Hughes, who is well-known throughout the state, was a big reason why Holmes badly wanted to become a Bulldog. Johnson recalls Hughes coming to Tylertown to watch Holmes run a single 100-meter race on a Saturday afternoon.
It showed to Holmes that Hughes truly wanted him and that a scholarship offer would eventually arrive.
“Coach Hughes is a great selling point,” Johnson said. “He’s not high pressure and he tells you the truth.”
It also didn’t hurt the Bulldogs’ chances that a former Tylertown quarterback is already on the roster. Jameon Lewis, a sophomore wide receiver, had told Holmes that he really likes being at Mississippi State and Johnson thinks that certainly played a role in Holmes’ decision.
Holmes was recruited as an athlete by the Bulldogs, but could easily transition to the wide receiver position like Lewis did once he arrives in Starkville.
“I could see him as a wildcat quarterback or as a slot receiver,” the Tylertown coach said. “His speed is just tremendous in the open field. We’ve clocked him at a 4.29 40-yard time. He’s got world-class speed.”
He should also be able to easily adjust to Mississippi State’s offensive scheme, as it is pretty similar to what Tylertown runs. Holmes attended the Bulldogs’ spring game and came away thinking, “They run a lot of the same stuff we do,” according to Johnson.
Holmes chose the Bulldogs over interest from Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Louisiana-Lafayette.
