Herbert Davis.

Below is a paragraph copied from the release.

Coach Davis is the only coach in the state of Mississippi to lead 4 different schools to state championship games (Winston Academy, Brookhaven Academy, Pillow Academy, and Heritage Academy), and his teams have claimed 3 state championships (Brookhaven Academy ’93 & ’09, Pillow Academy ’97).

Any input about him? Looks like a solid hire by MRA.

He is from Brookhaven and went to BA in the maybe the mid 80's. He's younger than me and I went to Brookhaven High, so I don't know him that well. He was pretty successful at BA, but left to assist at Ocean Springs with another guy from Brookhaven. I think he left there and coached at Lawrence County last year and didn't have a good year. He doesn't seem to stay at one place very long. That's all I got.

He coached my younger brother at Brookhaven Academy. He's one hell of a coach. He works his *** off too. It was normal for him to watch game film Friday night all the way until 5 AM. Just don't expect him to be at MRA more than 3 years.

Any truth to the rumors MRA is recruiting and paying tuition for athletes again? I thought those days were gone with the new Christian direction of the school.

I think so, I know of two kids out of Madison Youth League that transferred into

there and some of the guys I coach with said they were recruited what ever that means. Couple of the better players in the Youth League.

Played for him. Great coach, Modern offense, Very driven to win, will push you hard to be successful on the field, very organized. I don't really know why he bounces around coaching gigs so much.

Wow! can't believe they are starting that young. I heard the current 7th grade football team barely won a game a year in 4th -6th and only a few of those kids are starting this year. All new kids are the impact players. That's a shame, how'd the kid they got from Northwest 2 years ago work out? Work with the talent you got and develop those kids that have loyalty to the school. I guess Don Richardson, Jack Carlisle still have a lease on some apartments up in canton that need to be filled.

Herbert Davis is a hell of a coach. The guy is 100% football coach. He knows a ton. I worked with him for a bit at OS. I learned a ton from him in only a few months. MRA made an outstanding hire.

Wayne Academy does and so do a lot of the private schools. They're called "scholarships"

Don't know about what he's done the last 7-10 years, but he's got a good system. Works better at the smaller schools than the larger schools. There was a time where he probably could have gone to any single A private school and made them a contender within a year or two.

It's not just MPSA schools that recruit. There's recruiting going on at a lot of public schools too. This seems like the first year in forever Madison Central hasn't had a good QB transfer in from Canton Academy, JA, Neshoba Central, etc.

Played for him as well. One of the best coaches I've ever had. There were plenty of times we'd be on defense and he would be calling the opposite team's plays before they would run it.

Not questioning the coach.. From all accounts I hear he is an excellent man, coach.

I guess I did not realize how rampant the recruiting is in youth, jv and high school football. I don't mind the recruiting, but paying someone's ride is different. Thanks for the education!

I finished at an MPSA school in the 90's and we never recruited or paid anyone, and won 2 championships in 3 years with the same group we started with. I guess hard work and developing the talent you have are a thing of the past.

^^^^Pretty much nailed it.
Justin Malone was a scholarship student at MRA. Maybe he was recruited for athletics but I think he has a (or close to) a 4.0 in engineering (biochemical ?) at State too.

I'm not an MRA guy so I don't know much about what goes on up there other

than what friends tell me but they been recruiting in basketball for years and have no problem
dumping a guy in the grease that has been starting for years if the new guys means a state championship.

Um, they need to recruit harder!

They haven't defeated JA or Prep in a few years. Plus the JR high team got beat severely by Prep Monday night (like 42-0). The recruiting and tuition payment is BS....MRA has tuition Assistance like any other private school but it goes thru a committee and they don't just give it away. I'm not saying it does not happens but it's extremely limited (how many people do you know thatd pay $10K per year for a kids tuition because he is a good athalete).

Now, basketball. Duease has the resume to get some serious talent. Currently he has a sophomore (cousin of Bender) who is one of the top HS Sophs in the country, Calapari was supposed to come see him thus week. If your heard Bo bounds interview this week they spoke about him.....he is special. Forgive my typos, this iPad is hell to correct typing......

Davis seems to be a good one and he has a sophomore son who can ball (QB).......
