Establish ourselves as one of the top beach volleyball schools before anyone else does. We could win a national title by putting money into it before anyone else does.
It could be a quick way to get recognition especially since the talent is probably at the club level, not bashing the club sports.
They should take notes from the hockey team organizers, who seemed to be able make a big splash without much initial support. Also, it would be a good sport to watch on a nice day.
with a penchant for swisher sweets, sausage biscuits, and IBM Selectrics. He/she can write "The Beach Volleyball Playbook," establish a campus-bound summer camp, begin a career long obsession with the NCAA, before flaming out in a torrent of complete asshattery, threatening to remove his/her name from the back of the judge's stand.
I mean, with all the extra money our athletic department has lying around, it's a great idea.
We can barely fund our revenue-producing sports - why in the blue hell would we willingly sink money into a sport that isn't even popular here and would produce no revenue?? I hope you are either being sarcastic or are not a financial analyst.
It wouldn't cost very much, and we have an extra $4 million per year. Of course it wouldn't offer revenue (what sports other than the big 3 do anywhere?), but we'd have a shot at finally winning that elusive national title. We should also sponsor bowling and rifle.
I know we'll be getting a big boost in TV revenue from the new ESPN/CBS contracts, but guess what. Every other school in the conference will get it too and in case you haven't noticed salaries in football and basketball are spiriling upwards at a very fast rate. Even if we did have an extra $4M just lying around, we desperately need to use it to close the gap between us and the big schools in the major sports (football and basketball - there's no such thing as a "Big 3" sports). We should sponsor the bare minimum sports to keep ourselves in compliance with NCAA/SEC rules and not waste a dime on anything else.
I think it would be a neat sport, but I agree that the AD could not immediately fund it. It would probably have to start up like the Hockey team did and eventually hope to be incorporated into the Athletic Department, but I do not know how that would work out.
"It doesn't bother me that illustrious athletic programs like Vanderbilt and Maryland-Eastern Shore have NCAA D1 national titles and we don't because I don't care about national titles." Beach volleyball, rifle, bowling, etc., would be a drop in the bucket of our athletic budget. Why not have them and go for some kind of glory? There's always a chance of getting a consistently good program, and success in one sport can help bring success in others.
Its cheap...Some sand....a net...a pretty day.....and girls in bikinis....It would have more fans that womens basketball and maybe the baseball team this year.
Heck set up the net in the Left Field Lounge for heavens sake. All the male students not studying for finals and some that are will come....It will be a revenue generator....
