My GF and I have to go to New Orleans next month and neither of us have ever been. Neither one of us are big partiers but would like to be able to stay somewhere and walk to nice restaurants/ things to do. Does any one have any suggestions on places to stay and eat? Thanks

Hard to go wrong in those three areas if selecting a place with decent reviews ... If not big partiers, check out Uptown/Magazine St area.

So many places to dine... All depends on how much you want to spend and what environment you want.

Westin on Canal...

Generally reasonable rates. On the safer end of the Quarter. Walking distance to eating in the Quarter and CBD, with plenty of good eating establishments in both, but thats a topic for antother post. Close to Aquarium, museums, River Walk, etc. Adjacent to mall with movie theater (prices are sky high here, but what hey ya gone do?) Easy access to St. Charles Avenue if you want to go uptown, Garden District, etc.

If you're going for food and maybe some music, stay around Magazine Street (uptown or the garden district). We've had good luck with vrbo.com for lodging.

At night, stay wherever the people are. Don't walk down an empty street, even for just 1 block.

Go to Bourbon St around 9:00pm. Shotgun a couple Hand Grenades at Tropical Isle. Walk outside and stop at the first Hurricane Bar you see and get the orange frozen slurry called something-something Octane. Continue your walk down the Bourbon. Strut into the Cat's Meow like you own it and grab the mic from whomever is on stage and finish their song. Drop the mic and walk out. Keep heading down Bourbon and stop at the Krystal's and grab a bite to eat. Throw up all over the street on your way back down Bourbon. Stop at Big Daddy's and convince the lovely lady with you that "this will be fun". Pay cover. Walk in. Walk directly back out. Get escorted back to your room. Now it should be close to 10pm and you'll be back in your room for a good nights sleep.

I've never do this.**

You forgot Willie's Chicken Shack. Best late night fried chicken ever. Plus the honey biscuits are worth the trip alone.

I just got back from New orleans last month with the wife

Here is what I did:

Name your own price at priceline.com. Got a room at the Renaissance Arts hotel fro 120 dollars a night when it would have been 250 a night if I just booked it normally.

Go to Pat O's if you have never been. Get a hurricane and sit in the Piano bar, it is a great time. We went to the WWII museum during the day, which was really cool. Make sure you go see the movie narrated by Tom Hanks.

We ate at mother's for breakfast the first day and then went to Domenica's during happy hour where pizza's and drinks are half price. After the weekend my wife and I both agreed we liked Domenica the best so I really suggest going to this place. For dinner we went to Herbsaint the first night and La Boca steak resturant the second night. For breakfast the second day we went to a place called Surrey's Cafe and Juice bar because my wife saw it on Diners,Drive ins and Dives. The banana's foster there was the best breakfast item I think I have ever had. Send me a PM with any questions.

Check the schedule and see if Saints are in town.

Restaurant Revolution on Bienville in the quarter is my favorite high end restaurant - be prepared to drop $200.

Rum House on Magazine is delicious - Caribbean and taco bar. Atchafalaya is a good brunch spot so i've been told.

Then of course you have all the ones you constantly hear about.

Hilton on St. Charles. Street car runs right by there and is only $1.25 I think. Not too far from the touristy stuff you'll want to see on your first trip (Jackson Square, Bourbon St, etc etc).

Like the other said, stay near the crowd. Don't venture down any side streets even to take a piss; pissing in the main area is widely accepted in New Orleans**

We go down there a fair amount.

Check here for a hotel in the Quarter: http://www.valentinohotels.com/

You can get some pretty good rates, and I know the Conti and Place D'Armes are good hotels to stirke out walking the quarter. We've stayed at the Place D'Armes. Interior room with no windows, but we just slept there and we got if for $85 a night and it's half a block off Jackson Square. Just avoid Saints weekends. Hotel rates sky rocket.

Throw a rock and you'll hit a place to eat. Some of the nicer places I enjoy are Commanders Palace ($$$$$$$$), GW Finns, and Mr. B's. Been a while since I've been to Galatoires but if you want to stand in line it's worth it. Court of Two Sisters is popular with some of my friends and Bayona is a little bit of a different place but very good. Haven't been to any of Besh's or places like Cochon that get rave reviews, and I really want to try Antoine's sometime. For lunch we usually do something like Cafe Maspero or Deanies in the Quarter. Hit Felix's and stand at the oyster bar if you like them. It's an experience.

Going in December, check out the Celebration in the Oaks in City Park. Street car it down St. Charles to check out the Garden District houses. Basically the Christmasy stuff. They've got an awesome aquarium and insectarium if that interests you.

Bengals game at noon Sunday.

Ya'll should try to get out and enjoy the scenery around the dome even if you don't go in the game. Always a good time. I would think that you could scalp a pair of tickets for around $60 each if ya'll wanted to go in.

ETA: Just saw where you said next month. Yea, check the schedule.

Great call, Sesh.

A bunch of restaurants do something called Reveillon dinners in December. Bascially it's a 4 course meal with a few options for each course. We are doing Arnaud's when we go this year. https://holiday.neworleansonline.com/?post_type=reveillon

These are a great way to try some of the best food in Nola for an unbelievably cheap price. Lots of tremendous options but if I had to pick a few, I'd recommend: Brigtsen's, Luke, Rue 127, and Upperline.

Most of them looked really, really good.

We've never been to Arnaud's and figured this was a great way to try it for a little less cash. Plus, in all my years eating there I've never had Daube Glace'.

I'll second The Westin on Canal St. It's in a great location. Streetcars run right past the front. For $9 you can buy a 3 day streetcar pass - worth it. Ask your hotel concierge for directions to Jaques Imo's - Oak St off S. Carrolton - they don't take reservations but it's worth the wait. Order the alligator cheese cake appetizer and thank me later. You'd be hard pressed to swing a dead cat and not hit a good place to eat down there. NOLA's , Mr B's Bistro, Acme Oyster House, take your pick.

I went to Cochon a few weeks ago and highly recommend this place. It's hard to go wrong at a restaurant in Nola they, for the most part, are all fantastic. I'd also recommend Jacques-Imos too.

Good call on Priceline. I live in New Orleans, but have had to book rooms for various events over the last few years. I've always gotten the Sheraton on Canal or the Hyatt Regency on Loyola for less than $70.00/night.

Another way to try out some of our better restaurants for less money is happy hour. I haven't updated this list in over a year, but most are still accurate. I do know that all of the Besh Restaurants' happy hours (Domenica, Pizza Domenica, Luke, Borgne) have moved their happy hours to 2:00 - 5:00. I also highly reccommend the Reveillon dinners. Feel free to PM with any questions on restaurants, and please don't waste one of your meals at Jacques-Im or Antoine's.

My wife and I did our first New Orleans trip last year. We stayed at Country Inn & Suites French Quarter which we found to be a great location with reasonable rates. It's on Magazine Street about a block West of Canal St. We walked to the WWII museum, which was probably the best thing we did on the trip other than food. We spent several hours there and only went through half of the museum and watched the video. From the hotel it's also a short walk to Bourbon, Jackson Square, French Market, etc. Also being on Canal you can jump on the trolley if you get tired of walking, which we did the last day. The eating place that stuck out in my mind was breakfast at the Ruby Slipper Cafe, which is right across the street from Country Inn and Suites. We decided to try it one morning after we noticed a line formed outside the front door waiting for it to open.

I've heard all the talk about how dangerous New Orleans is, but we never felt in danger and walked everywhere. Maybe it's me being from Memphis that helped.

Lunch as well if you're there on the weekdays.

I know Commander's has a $16 price fixe three course and martinis are 25 cents. We might do Mr. B's which has price fixes between 20-25 and $1.50 martinis and bloodys.

RENT A CAR and get the insurance..the roads are for **** and you will have bent rims from the pot holes ..throw in the screwed up signage and construction and the collection of human debris that occupy that town....your car has a good chance of being hit and scratched while parked.

The Dungeon used to be the best bar in NO. I've heard it is under different owners now and is not the same though. I have also been to Preservation Hall which is a once in a lifetime experience if you are lucky enough to get in.
