I cant believe the number of pitchers we have signed so far. I'm guessing that means Cohen is planning on retooling most of the bullpen and getting us some solid starters. I cant say I blame him, considering how terrible our bullpen has been this year.

and signing some subpar players in the process. A year under their belts will do wonders for a lot of our guys, especially the true freshmen. I've heard this new guy from Hartselle (if that's who you're referring to) is pretty damn good though, at least on the high school level. A junk baller type.

I've heard that Busby will not be apart of the team next year. The elbow and shoulder surgeries were too much for him to play in the SEC. I guess we are compensating for his departure.

but Busby did play some SS last year. He actually hit 1.000. I'm not advocating that he should be the SS, but he could maybe be a utility/pinch hitter/DH type.

Is LH, and there are a LOT of junk ball LH- actually the proper term would be "crafty". (Baseball joke) I'm not expecting him to be an immediate impact guy or even a weekend starter, but more of a LH specialist/match-up guy.

I immediately think of someone that has no velocity on their fastball, but has a good changeup. Like a Tom Glavine.

but I'm hoping this is a Jon Harden/Jeff Hunter type of guy. Never hurts to have one of those guys to bring in after your starter has been gassing 90. Of course, that doesn't apply to us this year, do we even have anybody who hits 90?

as far as Girodo.

If you're talking about on our team currently, I know that Devin Jones can hit 91. Not sure what Routt throws.

If you're talking recruits, I have seen Chris Stratton hit 92 on the Trustmark Park gun and CC Watson has been reported by various sites to top out at 91. Luke Bole can hit 91 and Ben Bracewell tops out at 90 per one website that I saw. Here's what's sad about our current staff- we have a guy that is walking on that can hit 89 named Elliot Varney from St. Andrew's.

I know that velocity isn't everything, but there is some value to it. There's a reason why guys who can throw in the mid-90's are still coveted. It's chic to say "Well location is more impotant than velocity" and it certainly is important. But look at Chad Crosswhite on Weds. I didn't think he really pitched all that poorly- don't get me wrong it was hardly Koufax-esque- but he got a lot of ground balls that were seeing eye singles. Crosswhite's control was good, but if he threw 92 as opposed to 88, it would have made those swings just a fraction of a second later which could have caused them to be hit a little less solid and maybe fielded instead of through for a hit. And I'm not saying that you have to throw 90 to pitch in the SEC, or really even the big leagues. If you don't have great velocity, you have to change speeds, and have lots of movement along with great control. If you have all four, you stand a good chance of making it to the Big Leagues.

Wait 'till he sees what Cohen does to live kittens. He'll change his mind.

good junkballers drive most college hitters nuts and are very successful at that level of ball. Remember the NC guy that beat us 2-1 at the regional and essentially kept Cohen's 89 MSU team out of the CWS (probably our best team ever) --- you guessed it, he was a junkballer.

so that might have something to do with this signing.

Gendron had high praise for the guy--said he threw better than Watson this summer.

Sorry to use that cliche'. But his numbers as a junior were pedestrian. However, as a senior he has really stepped it up.

I find it hard to believe that he threw better than Watson, though.

He is what he is- probably a four year guy who probably should RS, but will get a shot early because of complete and utter lack of any bullpen whatsoever, and will probably end up being a solid middle relief guy or possibly even a midweek starter for us.

Jamie Moyer's "fast"ball tops out in the mid 70s, yet he went 20-6 and 21-7. That's 17n amazing.</p>
