but I'm hoping this is a Jon Harden/Jeff Hunter type of guy. Never hurts to have one of those guys to bring in after your starter has been gassing 90. Of
course, that doesn't apply to us this year, do we even have anybody who hits 90?
as far as Girodo.
If you're talking about on our team currently, I know that Devin Jones can hit 91. Not sure what Routt throws.
If you're talking recruits, I have seen Chris Stratton hit 92 on the Trustmark Park gun and CC Watson has been reported by various sites to top out at 91. Luke Bole can hit 91 and Ben Bracewell tops out at 90 per one website that I saw. Here's what's sad about our current staff- we have a guy that is walking on that can hit 89 named Elliot Varney from St. Andrew's.
I know that velocity isn't everything, but there is some value to it. There's a reason why guys who can throw in the mid-90's are still coveted. It's chic to say "Well location is more impotant than velocity" and it certainly is important. But look at Chad Crosswhite on Weds. I didn't think he really pitched all that poorly- don't get me wrong it was hardly Koufax-esque- but he got a lot of ground balls that were seeing eye singles. Crosswhite's control was good, but if he threw 92 as opposed to 88, it would have made those swings just a fraction of a second later which could have caused them to be hit a little less solid and maybe fielded instead of through for a hit. And I'm not saying that you have to throw 90 to pitch in the SEC, or really even the big leagues. If you don't have great velocity, you have to change speeds, and have lots of movement along with great control. If you have all four, you stand a good chance of making it to the Big Leagues.
