I'll take a 90-49 underachiever any day. Because as I said before, there's no such thing as "underachieving" or "overachieving." There's only wins and losses. How you get there doesn't mean a damn thing. If our next coach can recruit talent good enough to win 100 games and wins "only" 90, we'll build a statue for him and name the stadium after him. Phil Fulmer is a classic example. He's generally considered to be a great recruiter but an average coach. Yet, he's one of the most successful overall coaches in SEC history.

But do you not think that the talent left behind by the previous coach has something to do with winning percentage?

patdog - The ONLY thing that matters is the bottom line. Wins and losses.

Coach34 - yes, winning percentage thats what matters

Reading this, and other threads lately:

If you can go from #9 to his record before being fired, at a school with Clemson's history, budget, stadium, in the ACC (no where near the SEC), then you would probably be average or less at State. No, I don't want to be average....I want more. In fact, I thought everyone on here wanted more than average. In all seriousness, how long would everyone here accept 6-6, 7-5, or 8-4 seasons before bitching that we can/should be winning 9-11 games a year? I don't want to win 6-8 games a year and be content. I want to win 9-12 games a year with a 7-5 being once or twice a decade. I don't know if we will ever achieve that goal but we damn sure won't unless we try. Hiring Tommy B would be safe but would not, in my opinion, be the guy to light the fire for recruits, alumni, students, etc. He is TOO SAFE of a hire.

Blast away at me.....

First of all preseason rankings are a joke. Nobody knows how good these teams are going to be until they hit the field. All I know about Bowden is that he never had a losing record at Clemson and went to 8 bowls in 10 years. Forgive me for not minding if a coach with that track record is named our next coach

If you are wanting 9-12 wins a year at state you might want to take up hunting because you will never see that.6-7 wins a year is more likely to happen with a good coach.

they lost all of the offensive line from the previous season...nobody is going to be great having to replace that many starters upfront

Hell Georgia was pre-season #1 and you see how they finished. I am guessing none of you would want Richt here?

"We want somebody who has the intensity and the energy level to continue on what Coach Croom has built on and take it to a higher level," Byrne said.
That's really what I want to know. Bowden doesn't strike me as the type to fit into Byrne's description.

Would Bowden be better than Croom? Most likely. Would I be thrilled or inspired by the hire? No. We need a new energy level.

I can honestly say I have no faith in this rumor. I talked to my sources last night and it seems that a hire is a couple of weeks away. Now of course if were hiring Bowden it wouldnt take long. But talking to people "high up" I dont see this being remotely true.

your sources suck...you were as wrong as anybody could be about Croom being here next year due to "no money to buy him out"
