New to the Mississippi State family

I guess I should introduce myself first.

I've been a fan of the Memphis Tigers for as long as I can remember. In fact, I'm currently a student at the University of Memphis.

It's never been easy cheering for the Tigers, especially in the middle of SEC country. I've always loved SEC football, but I always made myself be in attendance at the Liberty Bowl, along with 11 or 12,000 of my closest friends. lol

The DeAngelo Williams/Danny Wimprine years were fun, but the momentum from those years was destroyed almost the moment that they left.

It's always been a struggle for me to make myself get excited about league games against such perennial powers as the Rice Owls and the UTEP Miners, but like a good Tiger fan, I pressed on.

On Saturdays that I wasn't at the Liberty Bowl, I kept up with SEC football, particularly Mississippi State. I'm from Mississippi, and I've always had a fondness for the Bulldogs, along with an especially ugly hatred for Ole Miss.

Naturally, being a Memphis fan, I always had basketball to hang my hat on. Like most Tiger fans, I overlooked the little pieces of trouble here and there that Tiger players would get into under John Calipari's watch. All of that was fine, as long as we kept winning, which we always did. Yeah, most of those wins were 50 point yawners against the likes of SMU and Tulane, but we always made up for it come tournament time.

I was crushed like never before when Mario Chalmers sank that 3 pointer. Nothing more needs to be said there.

Basketball was always fun, but it just didn't have the same effect as football. In my circle of family and friends, I have literally always been the only University of Memphis supporter in all sports. When it came to talking about football, I have always either been laughed at or brushed off. There is no sport on this planet like college football, and supporting Tiger football, year after year, eventually got me to a point where I hated the game itself.

It wasn't just because the Tigers usually lost more than they won. Lord knows I can handle losses. lol

It was because it seemed so pointless, being a fan of a non-BCS school. I became tired of making myself act like I gave a crap about a league game against Marshall or UAB, while hoping that my team can win six games so we can play in the hallowed (lol) New Orleans Bowl against Florida Atlantic.

At the very best, all I could ever hope for was a bowl game in our own stadium against an SEC school who would more than likely double the number of fans that we would have.

And hell, we've never even been able to pull that off.

I guess you could say that this latest scandal to hit Memphis is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. John Calipari blew up the program that he built years building, which is fine. Coaches come and go. But then, come to find out that the greatest year in Memphis' history will more than likely be wiped off the record books. It simply became too much for me.

I'm finally embracing that little bit of Bulldog I've always had in me. I bought my first maroon State t-shirt yesterday, which I'm wearing right now, along with a maroon State visor.

I absolutely love SEC football, and I don't have to be ashamed of that fact anymore. lol

I can finally admit that I'm a fan of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and I'm hoping to learn as much about our program's history as I possibly can.

I realize that the Bulldogs usually lose a few more than they win. I can handle losses. I'm coming from Memphis football here. lol

But instead of having to watch dreadful matchups against the likes of SMU, Central Florida, and Rice, I can now watch my team take on Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, etc, etc. I cannot overstate how huge that will be for me.

Like I said, I'm still a student at the University of Memphis, and that's where my degree will come from. But years of ineptitude, scandals, and bad football killed my passion for Tiger sports.

I'm a Bulldog now, and I believe I can get myself acclimated rather nicely around here.

I won't be able to make it to Starkville for every home game, but I plan on being down there at least two or three times this season.

And by the way, I'm hoping that somehow, I'll be able to get ahold of tickets for a matchup at the Hump between MSU and Kentucky.

I've got a little history with Mr. Calipari.

I never thought I'd see a fan jump on our wagon because his old team was a bit too dysfunctional. Anyway, we're glad to have you. Just make sure you have thick skin if you're going to post here.

You should fit in well here considering your already existing hatred for the Rebel faithful and snobbery in Oxford..........Here are a couple of tips.......Don't post or refer to that other MSU sports page.......Most of us were banished from that site and luckily so.....Sheep, sheep, sheep, and more sheep over there.........Also, we love a good rumor ever now and then......

We will struggle next year in football........Most reasonable MSU faithful will tell you that we won't exceed 5 wins.......Maybe 6 if we're lucky......Big Dan has to have some time. His first recruiting class was rated very highly (top 20)........

As for basketball, well, we could be very, very good next year and those who bleed Maroon/White are expecting big things.......Anything less than sweet 16 will disappoint most.........Bring on UK and Calipari.......

We ran off the "Legend" (Polk) in baseball and are expecting one of our own (Cohen) to lead us back to the promise land in baseball.....He can and will do it....We have history on our side and this very proud program will be resurrected given due time....

You have much to learn young Skywalker.......We shall teach you........THE SIXPACK WAY........

Nah, it goes beyond just being "dysfunctional". It's been a long time coming, with little things slowly building up. This last incident was enough to finally make me realize I was done with it.

And, hotdigitydog, I appreciate the heads up on the different boards. LOL

This one definitely looked more user friendly. :)

I'm here to learn!

Nah..gonna take a helluva lot more than that to run me off.

Believe me, I can dig the freedom of speech over here. Where I came from, posters would get in trouble for daring to question Tommy West's coaching abilities.

Memphis basketball will never be the same, whereas we should be top 20 and hopefully top 15 this coming season in basketball. And as far as football goes, we'll have a rough time this coming season with the little talent that Croom left us, installing a new offense, and the 4th toughest schedule in the nation. But like you said, at least there's promise in the near future whereas with Memphis there's just the CUSA championship and that's about it. But besides that, watch this guy's videos... http://www.youtube.com/user/sfslickdawg and you'll see alot of the high points of msu football history.

I watched a lot of the Memphis games during that same time. Mainly because I played against D Williams in high school and thought he was a great player. Like most have said times have been tough the past couple of years but give Mullen time and we should improve greatly.

While you are at it, you might as well start rooting for the Chicago Cubs or the Kansas City Royals, the Washington Generals and one of the following NFL teams: Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And since you can't be happy forever, you might as well get married, too.

Seem like a good guy, but stop the LOLs. Unless you really are a 14 year old girl.
You jump ship from your own school to cheer for another team? I thought having a team was like a marriage, through the thick and thin?

No matter how bad we suck I'll never leave..but to be fair since we are a BCS school we can achieve alot more than a non BCS school like memphis...at least as far as football goes.

Not about wins and losses.

When you get told by your school president that you can't have an on campus stadium, it tends to make you wonder why in the world you're even trying as hard as you are.....just things like that that have built up over the course of way too many years.

To be a State fan in Memphis can be tough. I hope you have thick skin and plenty of resolve. If you are attending the UofMemphis, I suggest you stop and enroll at State. That will help you meet other State fans and save you many trips down 78/45 and back. Besides, I could not imagine anyone deciding to be a State fan with out any personal attachment to the school. (I am sure it has happened but I could not imagine it.) Not to mention that far removed from Starkville and among the Rebs and Vols in the fall. Good luck with it.
