I guess I should introduce myself first.
I've been a fan of the Memphis Tigers for as long as I can remember. In fact, I'm currently a student at the University of Memphis.
It's never been easy cheering for the Tigers, especially in the middle of SEC country. I've always loved SEC football, but I always made myself be in attendance at the Liberty Bowl, along with 11 or 12,000 of my closest friends. lol
The DeAngelo Williams/Danny Wimprine years were fun, but the momentum from those years was destroyed almost the moment that they left.
It's always been a struggle for me to make myself get excited about league games against such perennial powers as the Rice Owls and the UTEP Miners, but like a good Tiger fan, I pressed on.
On Saturdays that I wasn't at the Liberty Bowl, I kept up with SEC football, particularly Mississippi State. I'm from Mississippi, and I've always had a fondness for the Bulldogs, along with an especially ugly hatred for Ole Miss.
Naturally, being a Memphis fan, I always had basketball to hang my hat on. Like most Tiger fans, I overlooked the little pieces of trouble here and there that Tiger players would get into under John Calipari's watch. All of that was fine, as long as we kept winning, which we always did. Yeah, most of those wins were 50 point yawners against the likes of SMU and Tulane, but we always made up for it come tournament time.
I was crushed like never before when Mario Chalmers sank that 3 pointer. Nothing more needs to be said there.
Basketball was always fun, but it just didn't have the same effect as football. In my circle of family and friends, I have literally always been the only University of Memphis supporter in all sports. When it came to talking about football, I have always either been laughed at or brushed off. There is no sport on this planet like college football, and supporting Tiger football, year after year, eventually got me to a point where I hated the game itself.
It wasn't just because the Tigers usually lost more than they won. Lord knows I can handle losses. lol
It was because it seemed so pointless, being a fan of a non-BCS school. I became tired of making myself act like I gave a crap about a league game against Marshall or UAB, while hoping that my team can win six games so we can play in the hallowed (lol) New Orleans Bowl against Florida Atlantic.
At the very best, all I could ever hope for was a bowl game in our own stadium against an SEC school who would more than likely double the number of fans that we would have.
And hell, we've never even been able to pull that off.
I guess you could say that this latest scandal to hit Memphis is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. John Calipari blew up the program that he built years building, which is fine. Coaches come and go. But then, come to find out that the greatest year in Memphis' history will more than likely be wiped off the record books. It simply became too much for me.
I'm finally embracing that little bit of Bulldog I've always had in me. I bought my first maroon State t-shirt yesterday, which I'm wearing right now, along with a maroon State visor.
I absolutely love SEC football, and I don't have to be ashamed of that fact anymore. lol
I can finally admit that I'm a fan of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and I'm hoping to learn as much about our program's history as I possibly can.
I realize that the Bulldogs usually lose a few more than they win. I can handle losses. I'm coming from Memphis football here. lol
But instead of having to watch dreadful matchups against the likes of SMU, Central Florida, and Rice, I can now watch my team take on Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, etc, etc. I cannot overstate how huge that will be for me.
Like I said, I'm still a student at the University of Memphis, and that's where my degree will come from. But years of ineptitude, scandals, and bad football killed my passion for Tiger sports.
I'm a Bulldog now, and I believe I can get myself acclimated rather nicely around here.
I won't be able to make it to Starkville for every home game, but I plan on being down there at least two or three times this season.
And by the way, I'm hoping that somehow, I'll be able to get ahold of tickets for a matchup at the Hump between MSU and Kentucky.
I've got a little history with Mr. Calipari.
GO DAWGS!
