I don't know if I "cheer" for any.
Then why are you on a high school football website? Every other person on here except maybe Edgy has a team they cheer for, pull for, went to that high school or has a child play for them.

That's a completely different question.
I follow a number of teams.

You qualify with 6 wins!
I think it's a great idea.
As you found out last season-nothing is guaranteed.
with those schools, 5 wins will get them in.

don't like disagreeing with MS, but i think it is a good move. Dean and I have bantered back and forth over the last few years, more and more, I think going 14-0, 9-0 is overrated. I hate losing, but with parity where it is, sometimes when you are really good, a bounce here or there is all it takes.

Welcome back.
This is nothing more than MS voicing his Trevian angst and getting called out on it.
It is absolutely a great move for N-T and hs football.
Congrats Coach Doll for having the stones to do it!
Now beat 'em since MS has declared you have "zero chance" to ever win.

Again there is zero angst toward them. I just think it is a dumb move. Plenty of other good teams to play. LA is a great team and like I said before NT has ZERO chance against them.

If getting all of your weaknesses exposed by getting the hell beat out of you is a great way to go to the top ( EG. 2010 MS) Then the Titans with the wolverine suits would be the heavy favorite going into the playoffs. They have been able to build off of the tough scheduling early in the season to sneak under the radar as a favorite to win it all.

I think you are mistaken about their schedule. If my memory serves didn't they play against Urban Prep ( which solicited many opinions on Edgy ) and St. Pats as the second game. I am not putting down either Urban or St. Pats, but they are not exactly top echelon.

My sarcasm has few bounds.

I did however want to mention that it’s been rumored that GBS turned down an offer from the Naperville Patriots 15U so they could play Urban Prep

Your sarcasm may have few bounds, but your brain certainly has it's limits. Now I know what Accipiter6 was talking about on here when he said all of Park Ridge thinks you're a clown.

I don't get the criticism. They are rivals. They want to play each other. I'd love it if ND played LA every season even though we'd take the vast share of L's. Rivals are meant to play each other.

I would like to see more of these local public private matchups. LT vs Naz, OPRF vs Fenwick, GW vs Montini, Benet vs one of the Naperville schools, LWE/HF vs one of the soutside CCL teams.

Benet vs NN was a big rivalry in the 80’s they played every year from the late 70’s until about 1994 when Benet ended the series.

LA views NT as rival - way more than ND. Although there are clearly kids that go to ND instead of LA given the $$$ difference that perhaps in the past would have gone to LA. So there is that thread. But NT is the rival. They are located a couple of blocks away form each other and I know of families where one kid goes to LA and the other one goes to NT. They have become big rivals in Hockey and Lacrosse over the past 5-10 years. It would be great to see the football program continue to get better at NT and for them to play LA yearly.

They're HUUUGE rivals in Lacrosse and historically two of the best teams in the state. New Trier is the Maine South/Mt Carmel/Loyola/Montini/Glenbard West of Lacrosse.

Since 2001, New Trier has 10 state championships in lacrosse and Loyola has 6. 2001 was the last time a team not named New Trier or Loyola won the state title. And in most of those seasons, the two teams were playing each other for the title. No one else is even close to their level.

Just as ND views St. Pat's as a bigger rival. But ask a lot of those LA kids and families from the NW side of the city about who'd they like to play--I am sure you'd get a fair share of "ND" responses.

ESCC:

I do not intend to marginalize or outright delegitimize the success either school has earned in lacrosse, but the sport did not enjoy widespread popularity until roughly a decade ago. Perhaps it was a bit longer, maybe 2003, but for close to three decades prior to the early 2000s, lacrosse was a sport virtually unknown outside suburban Cook County and largely rested among a dozen schools.

I have in the past good-naturedly mocked schools which counted state titles in swimming, badminton, hockey, or lacrosse, for example, when amassing a record to boast of, but I don't consider those titles as meaningful as a state crown in football, basketball, or baseball.

I do not aim to render those programs meaningless, but extremely limited competition, and the fact the Temple of Denial did not officially recognize them certainly establishes these titles as less significant in comparison to others.

Yes. Let's not forget girl's lax team. LA has won 9 in a row.( My daughter I am proud to say was on 2 of the teams ). The coach John Dwyer is the John Wooden of lax coaches.

I don't deny that, speaking generally within the realm of Illinois high school sports, the significance of lacrosse and hockey state titles carries less weight than other more mainstream/traditional type of sports like football, hoops and baseball. However, and I know you know this, both boys and girls hockey and lacrosse at NT and LA are a far more significant part of the athletics dynamic within those two school communities, than they are at practically every other school in this state. I guarantee more fans attend hockey and lacrosse games at those schools than attend baseball games...and especially when those two schools play each other in hockey and lacrosse.

I don't mean to speak for ESCC, but I think his point is more about the specific NT vs LA athletics rivalry overall (in which lacrosse and hockey play a very significant role) than it is about the significance of lacrosse and hockey state titles statewide.

Ramblinman: Spot on assessment. Of course with the scholarships tossed around the last 10 years or so from major academic schools for lax and with it becoming an official IHSA sanctioned sport instead of club, we'll see it explode in growth even more so.

First off, I want to say that I am delighted that NT and LA have decided to renew their regular season football rivalry.

I recall the old days in the years shortly after the CCL schools joined the IHSA. Loyola and NT would face off in week 1 every year for a few years, and the games were brutally physical. Legend has it that the series was called off by mutual agreement because too many kids were getting hurt and the rest of the season became anti-climactic. Remember, those were the years when the playoffs had brackets of 16 and qualifying for the playoffs was less inclusive than it is today.

While I enjoy reading all the replies regarding the wisdom of renewing the series from a NT perspective, I would like to examine it from a Loyola perspective. Phrased a little differently, is this series a no-win proposition for LA?

If Loyola wins or dominates, so what? They will be expected to do that. If Loyola loses, they REALLY lose because it was unexpected and it is to their closest rival.

Unlike GBS that is desperate for any win it can generate (viz. Urban Prep Englewood), Loyola needs to schedule successful competition that will contribute to it hosting home games in the playoffs, not just getting into the playoffs. So, from a playoff bracket seeding perspective, I think we have to question the wisdom of LA scheduling a school that is more likely going to finish a typical year at 6-3 or worse than 8-1 or better.

ramblinman:

Oh yes, I do understand his point and your added perspective. As you understood in my post, I was speaking very broadly over the matter. More to your and ESCC's point, we are of the same mind regarding the significance of these particular sports to both LA and NT and, by extension, the consequences of the results when the schools square off.

ramblinman:

While I never had the pleasure of beholding those titanic match-ups which ran from the late 60s to the early 80s, I imagine it provided some exciting moments. Having witnessed the pomp surrounding the rarer occasions in which the two teams played recently, I admit I am a bit envious about missing games which were settled by a matter of one or two points or as the clock expired.

My interpretation through a LA's prism is it will not hurt the school one iota. Since Loyola's football fortunes have risen considerably in the past decade, I see this series first and foremost as an opportunity for LA to re-claim neighborhood bragging rights. For NT, it is an endeavor to earn respectability.

While I can see some defining any potential loss to NT as a blow, only a lunatic would defy the weightiness of the rivalry. However, who knows? Although I would never explain a LA loss to NT as a symbol representing LA's decline, some dimwit could. In the event of a NY victory over LA, I imagine some overeager fan getting on edgy's site, blowing their horn about the win, and prattling on at sleep-inducing length about how LA's power over the football landscape is fading.

I just don't see a downside for either team, but there is a slightly bigger upside for NT at this point.

Over the summer I was at a street fest right where Elston starts at Milwaukee Ave in Norwood Park...and pretty much every teenage guy I saw had on either an ND shirt or a St Pats shirt (did not see a single Taft shirt)...so I think in that part of town ND and St Pats is a much bigger rivalry and delineation point.

Last LA vs NT game I went to was a night game at NT West that LA lost. I forget the year.

What I will never forget, however, was the maniacal laughter from the beginning of Ozzy Osborne's Crazy Train song that was blasted over the speakers at Naughton Field every time NT got a first down. Total bush league.
