Republicans have less than a 15% chance of holding the House. Even that much exists because (a) there aren't all that many competitive seats and (b) redistricting over the past 18 months netted the GOP probably 6-8 seats they wouldn't previously have had. So basically, it is very unlikely Rs will retain power here.

Moving to the Senate, let's call it 50/50. As you know, Rs have a 4 seat advantage (tie goes to the VP Party), and there is only a single Senate race in a state Harris won (Susan Collins). Dems have to hold seats in two Trump won states (MI and GA, the latter is a lock). So in a neutral environment, you'd kind of expect the net gain to be even.

To get 4 seats, Dems have to win several states that Trump won by more than 10%, and they have a 50% chance of doing so. North Carolina is the only "close" seat that went Trump's way in 2024, and Dems are a complete lock in that race. Dems then have to win two of Ohio, Iowa, Texas, and Alaska, and hold the state of Michigan. Ohio, Iowa, Texas, Alaska ... man those are lefty places ... lol. Again, Dems must win two of these states.

Republicans losing the Senate is a humiliating outcome that is a categorical rejection of the last two years. Maybe they ultimately hold on, which probably means that the election was poor but less than catastrophic.

Drano,

Here's one of your polls: Harvard-Harris generic poll as of late August has made a 6 % point shift since March and now STANDS at 51 - 49 % percentage points Republican favored to Democrat.

I agree with DeSantis in that local media in Massachusetts are outing the juror and setting him up as the sole nay vote (a bad guy) among a group of liberal jurors.

As far as the jurors, here is what one of the woman jurors has insisted on sharing publicly (why?):

"One of the 11 jurors who wanted to find Massachusetts mom Lindsay Clancy not criminally responsible for killing her three children said the panel (jury) viewed the case as a chance to make things "better for other women" and families — a thought process that one legal analyst is calling "problematic."

"Even though we didn't know what was going on outside of our little bubble that we were in, we knew that this was a turning point, and this would be something that could change something to make it better for other women in the future, for other families," 65-year-old Clancy juror Paula Devlin told "CBS Saturday Morning" over the weekend. "You know, justice for those children is never happening again."

In other words, the kids are dead so why not use her opportunity as a juror to push her social agenda with the jury verdict.

Bottom line: I don't know what instructions the jury was given on how to interpret the law but kudos to Ron DeSantis for sticking up for freedom of speech and thought.

How does murdering her THREE children made "it better for women " ?

AI is moving so fast, I haven't seen the outline of one realistic proposal on "reining it in" and certainly wouldn't trust Anthropic, which is the underlying issue -- who can you trust? Political science classes are probably at a standstill and politicians are trying to learn to speak out of more than 2 sides of their mouths. The old adage, follow the money, comes to mind.
Trusting policies going opposite of Chi-na wants is probably the wisest action.

Just like not having Amazon ship bat soup to your door.

Was it really about post partum?

I think this is a bit of a tightrope to walk. Do we want to excuse all sorts of bad behavior from women that just had babies?

Dahmer was crazier than a ********* rat. Experts described a mix of conditions rather than one diagnosis: necrophilia (a paraphilic disorder), borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and alcohol dependence. Some also noted antisocial traits. Defense psychiatrists argued the necrophilia and related disorders amounted to a mental disease that left him unable to control himself.

He was convicted in less than a 10 hour deliberation by a wise jury.

I am not a legal expert, but I think the message needs to always be very strong punishment, especially in brutal murder cases.

I am guessing anyone willing to murder innocent people are some form of crazy.
Yes. This was a case for liberal women that reflects “if the glove don’t fit, you must acquit.” Despite OJ being guilty as hell that was a social justice payback to the system. Expect to see more feelings over facts nonsense as there are non-profs training lefties for potential jury duty, how to answer questions to get chosen and then how to screw up the trial decision all for “just” cause. My how the left has apparently churned sympathy from unexpected places. I remember almost everyone in America being pissed off that Casey Anthony didn’t get convicted of 1st degree murder. That decision came down in 2011. 15 years later now we are letting someone off scott-free who murdered all 3 of her kids. Pure insanity.

This is what MAGA seeks to undo to return America to Greatness. Just a cult of xenophobic racists.
I don't get it? What is MAGA undoing? Since you are using xenophobic, I assume this is race based?

Big win to shock the world on Saturday-Texas over tOSU. I kinda enjoyed it even though both schools are easy to dislike.

You are in the Bubble Bud. A Republican candidate for statewide office in Texas is facing backlash from members of his own party after he shared a 'racist' post.
Bo French, the Republican nominee for the Texas Railroad Commission, shared a post on X Sunday morning showing non-white students at the University of Texas celebrating the school's stunning victory over Ohio State the night before.

He claimed it was evidence that the state's 'institutions have been overrun by illegal aliens and foreign nationals.

'I heard UT graduation this year looked like this, I didn't believe it,' French wrote. 'The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.'

Au contraire, mon frere. One person does not represent all Republicans or all of MAGA, let alone a guy with the last name of “French”. /MFGA!

The legal question on insanity - and most insanity defenses fail miserably - is whether the Defendant understands that their action is wrongful. Dahmer clearly knew that it was, and had a pattern or practice that made such knowledge obvious (I mean, he hid his crimes from the police, including the time they showed up at his door while he was in the process of murdering someone).

Was he crazy by the standards you and I think? Oh hell yes. By the legal standard for an insanity defense? Not even close.

I am obviously a process-driven person (see my views on politics), but the process requires the state to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this lady knew her conduct was wrongful. I think there is a fair bit of evidence she did not. But my opinion isn’t worth much, I don’t know all the evidence presented in court. I do know that 11 of 12 jurors felt the state did not meet its burden. I highly doubt all were lefty activists and I wouldn’t even be surprised if a few voted for the Trumpster.

Btw, Andrea Yates was first convicted in her case but after a retrial (because a state expert witness lied on the stand), she was acquitted in Houston. She has been civilly committed since.

I believe she sent her husband to the store so she could choke them out. Knowing if he was there, he would stop her. I am guessing she knew it was wrong when she sent him.

She never reported hearing voices in her numerous counseling sessions prior to the murders, but the first time a voice speaks to her, she does the unthinkable. I can't imagine the horror for those children as their mom choked them. I would send her to prison.

Prosecutors argued this was deliberate: she chose a farther restaurant than usual, searched Apple Maps for travel time, called the pharmacy to confirm stock, and created a window of time and privacy. They presented that as evidence of planning. The defense did not dispute that she sent him out or that she killed the children.

There's certainly evidence of premeditation of the act. The jury is charged with evaluating her capacity to understand the wrongfulness of the act. The jury heard all the evidence, and came back 11-1 that the state did not prove she understood the act to be wrongful beyond a reasonable doubt. I'd say that's a pretty good sign most people - hearing all the evidence - would not think the state had met its burden.

Btw, you want to make this political. Bemusingly, Plymouth County, MA went only 53-44 to Harris in 2024. I'd guess there wasn't just 1-2 Trump voters, there was probably 4-5 on the jury. Odds are the guy who voted to convict, if he voted, was a Harris voter. This is not political, this is legal.

Btw, I did not follow the Kasey Anthony case closely, but I remember all the drama from the verdict. One of the jurors - I will never forget this - said when asked how the jury acquitted her: "I think she was involved in the killing [of her daughter], but the state didn't prove it." Our system, properly understood, evaluates proof and not feelings.

The EU and the Green Energy Net Zero saps here in the US are either crooked or morons, maybe both.

The USA over that period reduced carbon emissions by 16% (we still produce a lot, just 16% less than 2000). Why? Replacing coal with natural gas and renewables. No idea on how much is each, plus there were efficiencies in manufacturing, cars, etc.

Rill would be glad to know that fewer cattle means less methane gas, so warmer weather has to be cyclical. ;)

The best part of this whole ordeal is that post-midterm Trump is likely to only cause MORE, not less, pain for the GOP. Demanding his name be put on everything (or shutting it down if not). Alienating allies. Stupid tariffs. Revenge prosecutions against his personal enemies. None of this is helping him or any other Republican.

The economy is not good enough, but it is also not bad overall. Moderate growth, inflation too high but again not disastrous. A notable upswing in the economy would probably get most of the Rs currently skeptical back in the fold, but it seems like it's over for Trump with independents, so maybe a best case -12% or so approval rating (it's -19% on Nate Silver's site right now). The worst case (like a recession)? Trump has GWB job approval and far more animosity directed at him by the other team's voters.

So basically the GOP hope in 2028 is an AOC or Harris nomination. Right now, traders on Polymarket give them a combined just over 1 in 4 chance (26%). I'm pretty skeptical on their political chops, feels like this will end with one of them maybe finishing third to Ossoff, Newsom, Shapiro, and/or Kelly (I think AOC has more legs than Kamala). And neither AOC nor Harris is a sure loser to JD Vance, a candidate with all Trump's downsides and few of his upsides. Yikes.

Basically, Republicans can re-set in the 2028 primaries or just hand the country to Dems in 2029, with much less hope of a major recovery quickly.

The chickens have finally come home to roost!

You do like politics. Most election cycles the party in power loses seats in the House during the midterms, the Senate is less predictable because it is only 1/3 of the seats being voted on. The war with Iran has destabilized the economy message for Trump and there is not much he can do about it. The underlying economy actually is pretty good but high fuel prices get into everything.

I hope you are still posting in April 2027 when the Dems are shutting down the government, impeaching Trump, and basically doing everything they can to create chaos. New Dem Senate leader "pick your lefty" will be glad to have the loyal support of Texas senator Talarico for six years. It is not going to be pretty but you will be "glad the chickens have come home to roost".

Also you are dreaming if you think the Dems would ever nominate Shapiro. Never, ever, ever, going to happen.

You act as if he is unfortunately stuck with the consequences of the war due to no fault of his. He started the damn war for no good reason.
Also why are you so sure the Dems wouldn’t ever nominate Shapiro?

I am particularly glad supplicants like yourself will feel pain. You deserve worse for standing by like cowards as Trump debased the GOP and so called conservative movement.

I think Trump has done a plethora of impeachable things. Not sure Dems will impeach but definitely don’t care. The guy is quite literally a cryptocurrency scammer, while President of the USA. It’s atrocious.

Btw in the last midterm, Dems finished about 2.5 points behind on the national House ballot. A great night for Rs would be a 5-6 point loss. Dems won Senate races in AZ, GA, and PA. Midterms are bad for the party in power - except the one Trump selected the R candidates in which it wasn’t that bad for Dems - but this is completely catastrophic.

Also Vance is as bad a candidate as Hillary and Kamala, potentially running in a worse environment. That’s a McCain like loss against a sane opponent.

You’ve handed the country to Dems. You just don’t know it yet. Supplicants and cowards.

You are a one note Pollyanna. Name calling like I personally control anything Trump does.

I worry about the consequences of elections and you identify candidates you hate and spend your energy rooting for them to lose. You hate Paxton so bring on weird left wing Talarico. You hate Trump so bring on government shutdowns, kabuki theater, things which genuinely will be bad for the USA but get the man with the orange hair.

Yep, it is these deranged bitter “people” who call others pussies (on the internet, lol) who also can’t appreciate what Trump is doing to the Chicoms.

Real price per barrel for US yesterday was 104. Meanwhile for China it was 134. That hurts!

Again, I'm just pointing out what someone like you is - a supplicant and a coward. I mean, I get it, it hurts. You had the chance to stand up to something unacceptable, and you pussed out. Now you are out here upset people are opposed to Ken Freaking Paxton, hilarious.

At least there's strength in numbers. Far more people made the wrong decision - on several occasions - than made the correct one.

And here we are.

Also congrats to the Dems for their massive trifecta starting in 2029. There are still ways to avert it, but it will involve simply moving on from Trump/MAGA to something different, and Vance ain't it. Kemp, Youngkin, Rubio ... all options for this. May still lose, but will mitigate against worst case outcomes (and would probably beat a left winger).

I have to say this. Every American voter had control over his or her vote. I hate "judging by voting," but JFC if you voted for Donald Trump versus waiting 4 years for something not completely insane ... my word folks.

It's cowardice or insanity or stupidity. We have all types of Trump voters here.

What I’ve gathered is he wants the same Republicans in charge who created forever wars, hollowed out the US manufacturing base, sat on their hands while Democrats took over US institutions and not just the education system, and also had zero answers for the illegal aliens, border security, drug trafficking, Latin American gang activity in the US, etc. Trump needs to be blamed for our deficit despite every other President in recent memory running significant deficits and Congress voting for debt ceiling raises with regularity...but it's all on Trump. Somehow it’s Trump’s/MAGA’s fault the Republicans will lose the mid-terms. Doesn’t the party in power tend to lose seats in the mid-terms? This doesn't seem like sound reasoning to me considering the pretend Republican he voted for and supported in Texas threw the Texas Republicans under the bus by endorsing the transgender children pushing, vegetarian fake meat eater DSA Democrat. Who needs Democrats when you have Republicans like Cornyn, Tillis and Massie? How does one complain about Republicans losing the midterms while going out and voting against Republican candidates?

Trump isn't a p***y like most of the other Republicans in DC. BTW, it's nice that we've supported Ukraine so much with our tax dollars. They've went ahead and struck Russian refineries that make diesel fuel. That's caused prices to be quite high on the world market.
