Quade is the most consistent shooter on the team. He tries to set guys up, but they are so bad they either throw it away or miss the shot by a mile. Literally, the only thing they are consistent at is lobs and wide open layups. Other teams just clog the paint and force us to shoot. If Knox and SGA are hitting then Quade's assist numbers usually look good and doesn't have to seek his shot.
Agreed. It's so blatantly obvious to me that SKJ and Gabriel are much better that I don't see how anyone that watched last season and this season very closely could miss that. I sometimes wonder if people think there is a magic wand, and a player will transform from what he is to an NBA All-star by the wave of a wand. The improvement is going to be incremental, but the difference it brings, which to our eye might only effect a few plays a game, can be big for the team.
If you look at Jones and Gabriel and see no improvement over last year you are blind. They aren't superstars. They aren't lottery picks. But they absolutely have improved by leaps and bounds.
People have been crying for serviceable 3-4 year players (which, by the way, I agree we need some) and these two guys are prime examples of those kinds of players.
You were probably saying the same thing about Knox when he committed. The truth is, no one knows how good someone will be until they step foot on campus and actually start playing.
Same for WG, he isn't a star but is playing within himself. not making so many stupid turnovers, rebounds hits a 3 now and again
This team is losing because of turnovers, defense, and 3-point shooting.

Baker and Herro alone adds a dynamic that we don't have this season. Throw in a sophomore Green who is a solid shooter as well, and it could be one of Cal's best ever three-point shooting teams.
The "tweak" I would suggest is substituting offense (and I don't mean 3-point shooting) for defense in your analysis of why the team isn't winning. I think the defense has pretty darn good of late, especially for freshmen. Even upperclassmen will have defensive lapses, but I like this group's defensive ability pretty well now.
3-point shooting does need to be better, but that's what? - a couple more made shots a game for a good balanced team to win? To me that's a minor point (still important though). I think UK has to find some more easy points - post-ups, drives, transition, foul shots, a few free throw line jumpers.
Just my 2-cents.
I like the shooting potential too (although we have to see it live first to know whether it will pan out like we hope.). But let's not forget, 3-point shooting is the icing, not the cake. Otherwise, we could just mail the championship to Vanderbilt every year.
I say we find Jared Sullinger (the Ohio St. version), and have him work with and play against PJ Washington all off-season. Then add that and Johnson to those shooters, and see how the rest of college basketball likes those apples..

There is no doubt that Herro and Baker can and will make threes next year. But we have to be able to give them good looks...like we did with Miller and Lamb on Cal's national title team. To do that you have to have a solid point guard (like Quickley) and a consistent presence under the basket....or play them both at the same time and throw a lot of timely skip passes and/or drive and kick outs (like Duke does...gross now I need to shower).
Put simply, they can't be forced.
Slightly off topic: Looking back, how dangerous was that Davis team?? They had good shooters, but more than that, you had a guys like Terrence Jones and Davis that could grab those tough offensive rebounds after a long jump shot. That's one of the key reasons I think that team was so tough to beat.
How will we be better next year (if only those 3 you mention leave)? The answer has 3 parts.
1) Players get better, improve. Show me a SOPH, and 90% of the time he is better than he was as a FR. Show me a JR, and 80% of the time he is better than he was as a SOPH. And I think we may get significant improvement from Richards, Vanderbilt, and Washington.
2) We may have better balance. We are playing this season with just 3 guards. We will have 4-5 guards next year. This give us more options, more combinations, more COMPETITION for those 80 guard minutes.
3) We think we will be a better shooting team. SGA and Knox are ok shooters, & Diallo is capable. We think Baker, Quickley and Herro are all 3 at least ok if not good shooters, and Johnson is capable.
Its funny how the fans that get way too optimistic about incoming freshmen, like they were about this team in the preseason, are the same ones that are so negative about how good sophomores under Cal can and will be. They aren't normal sophomores, because they logged so many minutes as freshman. If we get Quade, PJ, and Richards back just to name a few, then think about how many minutes they've already gotten as freshmen. They'd be studs next year. If all we lose is Knox, Diallo and SGA then we are a top 5 team. If SGA somehow returns I'd say we are title favorites along with Duke... slight edge to us because of experience (it doesn't matter as much as people thought it did 10 years ago, but it matters more than some people want to admit now. Look at this team for proof of that)
If we only lose those three we will be better. The only one that would kinda hurt is Shae. The other two don't bring anything consistent to the table. We will be more experienced, stronger and better shooting. Now I'm really thinking we will probably have Gabriel and SKJ leave (either overseas or transfer) after this year. No rotational player tends to stick around after two years these days.. sadly.
There's a better chance of CNN doing a positive story on Donald Trump than there is of Trevon Duvall & Wendell Carter returning to Duke next season.This Duke team that has no depth will lose their entire starting 5. And they won't be as good next season as they are now.
And my hope for UK next year is. That the only players we lose are Knox & Diallo. Plus I don't look for Tai Wynyard to be back next season. So if these 3 are the only players we lose, that means that we can add 2 recruits to go with the 3 we've already signed. I'm hoping these 2 players will be E J Montgomery & a reclassified James Wiseman. There are those that will tell you that Wiseman won't be eligible to reclassify. And others will tell you that he is. So, if my hopes become reality. We would have incredible size, depth, shooters, & something this team doesn't have, experience. We will be the #1 team in the country next season......... This would be what our roster would look like next season.

I would be very happy with that projected roster, even minus Montgomery and Wiseman.
Baker and Herro and Keldon and Quickly will give Kentucky more than what you are getting out of Knox, Vanderbilt and Diallo this season (Keldon will have less pure WOW games, but he will have more consistent games throughout the year where he is putting up numbers).
I'm guessing Green is gone - transfer - if Shai Alexander returns. Quickley and Alexander would be in front of him in the rotation and Herro and Baker are better two guards than he is and can do what he does (shoot) better.
You people need to get over this Duke, Kansas, Looserville crap...worry about the SEC...that is where you will be made or broke down.

If we have 0 players next year it'll be hard to win with that happening. Neither your scenario nor the one where we lose 9 players is going to happen.
