Blast away but someone in Starkville needs to open up a spot equivalent to "The Library". The night life in Starkville is too scattered out. On a big recruiting weekend like this in Oxford you can assure that every recruit along with every good looking girl in that town will be there having a good time. Starkville was on to something a few years back with the state theatre but as far as I know it's closed. Anyone feel the same way?

Agree completely. You have the Cotton District, which is 6 spread out/small bars, then there are a couple downtown, then Rick's. We need State Theater to be successful. This is the only place to have a large crowd, but they can never stay open.

The cotton district is spread out? Have you ever been to the cotton district. The majority of the bars are on 1 block

the "party" is spread out. You have people spread out to 6 bars, instead of everyone at one bar, like the library. So you want to take all of the recruits to the Bin?

You can fit about 30 people in each bar in the cotton district. It's a good hang out spot but that's about it.

I don't think it matters if you take then to bin 612, ricks or any other bar in Starkville. A recruit is never gonna pick State based on Starkville's nightlife.

Just let everyone know where the recruits are going to be and have everyone show up there. The recruits entire itinerary is made public in oxford and the crowds know where to show up.

Is this true? I've never heard that before....just figured they blindly followed the croots like the pied piper and the children following.

My neighbor and previous owner of 4th & 23rd in Tuscaloosa is in the process of trying to get a "4th & 23rd" in Starkville in the next year. Don't know if you've ever been, but it's a perennial hotspot in Tuscaloosa.

The problem is there is no where for underage kids to hangout

All the bars except for lame old Ricks and the Hunt Club are 21+. If you're underage and don't have a fake you're SOL. Starkville needs a bar similar to the Library with music, a stage and a dance floor where anyone 18+ can go. It would be awesome if it could be close to the Cotton District too. State doesn't have the same demographics as Ole Miss. Not as many people go out, and then to make it worse the bars are all spread out.

State Theater was the biggest attraction in Starkville when I first moved here, it was the place to go. It's perfect for big party atmospheres because it has a decent sized dance floor, big bar, a balcony with another bar above it, and in what used to be the Bistro, there were two more bars. I miss that place.

The last manager/owner/whatever had good ideas like adding "Dawg Wingz" to the side of it and a blues night, but it just never took off to previous form for whatever reason. They also started offering a late night restaurant that was pretty cool to just walk over to after partying.

Have you spent any time in Oxford? They don't have a lot more people out, their bars are just more concentrated.

It also helps them that the library usually has little to no competition with other bars around the square as far as the under 21 crowd. If you go there, it's packed. The Rick's or the Hunt Club was within walking distance to other bars, and it was easy to drink underage there, you'd be able to replicate the Library pretty easily.

Why would I be kidding about Starkville not having an awesome nightlife? I like MSU and Starkville as much as any alumni or current student but there is no need to act like Starkville is party central.

Someone legitimate needs to buy State Theater and do it justice.

The problem is every couple of years some kid thinks he can run it by doing exactly what the previous person did. Yeah, the last guy did the wing restaurant, but he also was the DJ.... Who blatantly typed songs into YouTube and played them from there.

They tried to draw in a regular crowd too by offering the "Greek cards" where it was basically $5 for all you can drink some random weekday, and unfortunately for them that's the only time people would go. That would be a good deal for them (losing money once a week) if people came back the next night and spent $3 for a beer.

They need to overhaul the thing. It has potential. The next guy just has to manage the attractions better and not charge a $10 cover fee for 21+ on the weekends when they actually do have a real DJ. As a 21+ I would just walk down the street to another bar for free. 18 year olds who "won't be buying alcohol" but taking up space should pay cover. Everyone is happy.

The Pony should be our recruiting ground zero.

Figure out how to make it happen. Like by next weekend.

I may be showing my age.... But did anyone ever go to "Gilligan's" in Jackson, Tn back in the day? That would be a hell of a template for the state Theater. It's about the same size.

The main problem for state is we always have our big recruiting weekend on Martin Luther king weekend so a lot of people go home for the 3 day weekend. There are not great spots for recruiting parties, but the fact there aren't people in town is the bigger issue. The sigma chis used to have a big party whenever recruits came but it does no good when all the girls are gone.

Also, for ole miss this is their first weekend back when everyone is town back from Christmas break

Dude I go to the pony everytime I go north of meridian. That is a mother17n fact. We need a computer nerd to make the most awesome fake ID's in the world and hand them out with full disclosure to the recruits. Have some older players go with them to keep them cool and show them the ropes. Not just the naked house but all the bars too. I bet you anything that ole miss has some dipshit making fake ID's. it may not be known but it's there. Ok I'm about to go find a rebel to punch.

Ricks tried to do the whole library feel with 3 different bars and failed rather quickly. Problem is Starkville is spread out where people go to party. District, Dowtown, Ricks and Cowbells. Oxford 90 percent of the people go downtown.

I bartended for 3 years in Starkville. It is hard to run a succesful bar with having to run specials all the time to get people in. 2 dollar and 2.50 bottles and dollar nights on weekends. We are the only town In American who does it. And nobody wants to pay cover anymore in Starkville. Thus you make bars 21 and up because you can't risk the fines.

Look at what bars have lasted in the town. They all serve food and are very successful at it. ricks is the only one that's lasted without it. I started at state in 02 and just naming off the bars I remember not making it

Cheers, blue marlin, boars head, court house, luckys, whiskey blues, bistro, state theatre, old manhattan, up your alley, tabs, the hunt club might as well be listed, and mugshots. Yes a few have changed ownership and names but the only 3 I can think that have lasted Are old Venice (food), Dave's, and Ricks.

Starkville is not a party town. Every bar is to small besides ricks and the theatre. kids go home on weekends, cops are awful, Only big party weekends are bulldog bash, Super Bulldog, and some home football game weekends.

Best thing could ever happen would be on weekends close down the streets in the cotton district from the old texaco to past the bin. Ands well and page. Line up beer carts and make it like a mini bourbon street. Or more bars open downtown and close off Main Street.

Apparently that little strip is a right of way for emergency vehicles, so that's a no go.

They are still open to serve food but the music/bar scene is gone because an underage kid got hammered then drove drunk, wrecked, and died immediately after leaving there. City shut them down.Think that's been just over a year ago.
