Wall Street Journal published an article today on Iowa's new head coach, Ben McCollum.

Article is behind a strong paywall. Here are key quotes:

"McCollum’s system was founded on a simple principle: Do not settle for anything less than exactly the shot you want. When the Bearcats had the ball, they played like chess masters, unlocking the defense with slow, patient attacks until openings inevitably appeared."

Ben: “Some of the teams that may spend the most money or on paper may have the most talent don’t necessarily win,” McCollum said. “Because they’re not a connected group.”

Ben, in his debut season as a power conference head coach, won more NCAA games in 72 hours at Iowa than Pike has won in 10 years at Rutgers.
Some might remember that Coach Bannon had a similar philosophy. He said that forced shots were just as bad as shot clock violations. Emphasized not turning down good looks. Plus he was big on "team building" including one stupid exercise that cost him his job.

Dan Hurley wrote in his book, "Some special coaches and administrators gave me the opportunities I needed to ascend in this profession and ultimately win championships. Kevin Bannon at Rutgers."

Dan continued, "Kevin had a brilliant mind for the games X's and O's. I learned a lot from him in a short time. I took careful notes. On a fly, in a huddle, he could draw up something that was very, very smart."

Rutgers basketball used to have coaches like this.

Today, Rutgers basketball has a staff that is paid multiples of previous staffs, is incompetent, and is entrenched.

Regime change can't come soon enough to Rutgers men's basketball.

Yet the Coach Bannon years were hardly glory days. He never made it to the NCAAs at Rutgers and after going 19-13 in his best year, his teams finished 15-16 then 11-16 in his final year. He wasn’t Littlepage or Jordan bad, but the years he was at Rutgers weren’t close to the kind of years fans dream about.

That 19-13 team collapsed down the stretch.
