I heard recently that NIL was buying condos in Starkville. Was not aware of that but it’s probably cheaper long term than renting.

Thoughts?

Miss State officials should be in Philidelphia begging to add hotel rooms. Also build indoor virtual roller coaster type rides. Make an amusement park that would bring people into the area.

I know some folks stay there for ballgames, but it's over an hour from campus to the casinos in Philadelphia without gameday traffic. This is just never going to help in a meaningful way. Any solution to hotels availability for State events starts and stops in Starkville.

Maybe add some shuttle busses? I know Alabama has some that run back and forth from Meridian, or at least they did for a Texas A&M game a few years ago.

I do think we’re going to have to think differently to cure this issue. It’s just hard for someone to make a profit running a hotel in Starkville for a few weekends a year.

Assuming you mean for student athletes as part of their NIL package? If so I’m good with it as long as as soon as a player enters the portal they get kicked out.

Yeah something like that might work, could see the casinos getting some decent tour vans. Still, they’d prolly need people to stay 2 nights in order to make it pencil so they’d have to run the shuttles the whole time - no offense to the Mississippi Band of the Choctaw Indians, but I’m not trying to spend that much time at the Golden Moon. Said another way, if I’m from out of town and get a long weekend in Starksville for a game, I wanna spend my time in Starksville.

All of that to say, if opening another hotel in town was a money making venture somebody would be doing it. It is a little surprising there isn’t a more robust selection on vrbo.

That is what I took out of the conversation. Places to put athletes as part of their NIL deal

I sometimes think that students could benefit there, but where would they stay themselves? Guess they could team up with others and stay at their apartment and rent out the other via AirBNB or whatever. It does really suck.

It would be better if Philadelphia/Tupelo were within 30 minutes instead of an hour. I mean we decided to take every disadvantage possible and pile them all up Starkville.

This is why I don't understand how QI hasn't been bought and refurbished.

Also the demand isn't a few weekends a year, I know of parents that have issues finding rooms for any academic events as well, graduations, family weekends... etc etc.

edit to add: I guess if you're the current owner and it sells out as is.... why spend any money on it 🙄

You say that but how long did it take to get a larger bar where two brothers is and they're doing great. You can make money in Starkville. I'm not sure why more people don't invest. Probably because they all have that way of thinking. The vrbo thing is because the restrictions the mayor has placed from what I understand about that.

Yes it's always difficult to find rooms. Travel ball, baseball season, football season, graduation, etc. There have been more hotels come up the last ten years so I imagine that's helped a lot but for football, there will never be enough because of reasons above.

Sucks for locals and traveling fans, but that’s a HUGE part of our NIL package that is lacking. Money offered is right in line. The ancillary stuff is not. Housing, housing for family, travel arrangements, and vehicles. All the stuff that the average State fan thinks is ridiculous to provide is where other schools are beating us in the NIL game.

Both Air BnB and VRBO have good option (more so Air BnB). I’ve used Aor BnB the last 2 trips to town. Have gotten places in the Cotton District for reasonable prices ($150/night this weekend).

Good luck finding one football season. The hotel in end zone, I thought was a good idea. We would at least benefit having a bigger hotel on campus like LSU does. You all might not be aware but one already exists for us. If we had something bigger we could block off so many rooms dedicated to parents of players for the games that weekend where their child is playing.

I’ve long held that our pragmatism is a limiting factor in spending/wasting $$$ buying athletes pre-NIL and now
