I read where it said a predominantly black dorm took on a predominantly white

dorm in the scuffle. I found that ironic.

3 major national news level racial incidents in the last few years. That's not just a fluke.

Probably not near as bad as it looks. But you have to laugh......

....because it should definitely help MSU and USM is gaining the support of black Mississippians. Whether or not it's really realistic, and I highly doubt that any black person was ever in any danger, it's still the perception of Ole Miss.

That beacon of culture that is Oxford and OM. Isn't there a video somewhere about their "tradition"?

A couple of videos

at this link. Rather tame for a riot. There is a multiracial hotty toddy in there. I love the WARNING: THIS VIDEO IS RAW label at the beginning, it seems like something from the Onion TV.

The most objectionable thing that happens in either video is a frat guy standing in the back of a truck who immediately complies with a police directive to 'sit down,' with a courteous 'yes sir' to boot.

I get that you are in damage control mode.....

...and I agree that this is stupid and the media is blowing it way up, but sorry, your university is taking an image hit. Feel free to make yourself feel better. Thus is life.

Actually, just a 'reunion' ... this being the 50th Anniversary of the real riot

....because it should definitely help MSU and USM is gaining the support of black Mississippians. Whether or not it's really realistic, and I highly doubt that any black person was ever in any danger, it's still the perception of Ole Miss.

Fifty years ago ... wow, guess they were out 'celebrating' the Golden Anniversary!

I can certainly understand the frustration but......

As riots go, that one doesn't look so bad

This isn't the best way to blow off post election steam. Especially for an institution that still carries a stigma of racism for their past actions and the symbolism they choose to identify with.

Got a feeling this little incident has been filed away by any number of recruiters.

With all due respect. I don`t know if you`ve on/around a college campus lately but kids of both races seem to segregate themselves based on own their choice. Not condoning it and don`t claim to know why .... just an observation.

Still the only fanbase in the nation where some of them only pull for you because of what the flag represents. Real talk! I know idiots that come in that even TELL me what i just stated. They don't go to games, don't watch games, couldn't barely tell you who was coaching your team but wear Ole Miss attire because what it "stands for" (there quote, not mine). Guess much like your fanbase thinks "the south will RISE again". Wow, there is NO other fanbase in the nation that has THAT strong of a racial connotation. If you tell me that's UNtrue you my friend are an idiot!

You can't deny that those people are a significant part of your fanbase though. You may not like it, but that doesn't change it.

Thankfully, less everyday

and the ones the other poster was ranting about who don't come to games? At least they aren't on campus. I'm thankful for all the fans we lost when we got rid of the flag, then the Col, then FDWL.

Dan Jones Letter..

November 7, 2012

Dear Ole Miss Family,

There are media reports of incidents on our campus last evening in the wake of the election results being announced. First, let me assure all of you that the campus is quiet and safe this morning for all of our students. While the investigation into last night’s events continues, we are grateful there are no reports of injuries or property damage.

The reports of the use of racial language by some have been confirmed by our campus police. The University leadership strongly condemns this kind of behavior and is embarrassed that any students associated with the university would use this kind of language. Our university creed calls for the respect of each individual and for fairness and civility. The investigation of this event will be thorough and individuals found in violation of any law will be referred to appropriate authorities. Individuals found in violation of university policy will be dealt with appropriately through the student conduct process.

As we have acknowledged throughout this year of recognizing fifty years of racial integration at our university, despite evidence of progress, we still live in an imperfect world. All of us in the university community must recommit ourselves to condemn hate and to continue our work to assure our university is a safe and welcoming place for every individual every day.

Sincerely,

Daniel W. Jones, MD

When I was at MSU, Suttle Hall was basically all black

I don't know if it's still that way, but I agree that it's like that everywhere.

Not taking up for Ole Miss here, but.....

I honestly have never in my life met a single person who wore Ole Miss gear strictly to honor the Old South/be racist/etc. I will give them hell as much as the next guy but I won't just make stuff up. Those people may exist, but I've never seen them, and I was in fact raised in MS around Ole Miss people.

I do, however, think many Ole Miss fans are racist, but it's more that a significant portion of them come from well to do families who never had anything to do with blacks. It's not really a violence thing, it's an elitist thing, and honestly, Ole Miss people feel they are better than most other whites as much as anyone else.

Yeah. That's real tame. Looks like a demonstration and maybe a little shouting, but no big deal. Or at least it shouldn't be. But people will make way too much of this and it does make both Ole Miss and the whole state look bad.

Radio said there were two arrests after initially reported as none. One arrest was for... Drumroll please................public Drunkenness. That is public drunkenness on a Tuesday that so happens to be election night and at an anti Obama demonstration. I think someone got together and determined this was the night to reinforce all UM stereotypes in one single night.

I live in a county close to Starkville and encounter these same individuals on a weekly basis. I assure you they exist. Even have Col. Reb in a sticker on his king ranch back glass waving a confederate flag with a speech bubble (ala comic book style) screaming "the south will rise again" while wearing tsun garb.

??? Have you ever spent time among the well-to-do in Mississippi?

It's not really a violence thing, it's an elitist thing, and honestly, Ole Miss people feel they are better than most other whites as much as anyone else.

I'm sure there racists spread out across the economic spectrum, but it's probably less as you move up the socioeconomic ladder. Ole Miss has more racist fans because Ole Miss's history (fight against de-segregation, rebel flag, etc.) attracts them. But my impression from being around Ole Miss people is that these fans generally do not come from particularly well to do families. They're rednecks from all over the state that like to think of themselves better than blacks and those redneck farmers at MSU.

Also, I'm guessing that people who never have anything to do with black people tend to not be racist. I know attributing rationality to racists is probably giving them too much credit, but why would they spend any time being prejudiced against people they never have anything to do with? Especially to the point that it actually affects anything they say or do?

You may have misunderstood me.....

or perhaps I wasn't clear enough. In MS (and other areas where Ole Miss recruits), there are many blacks. So, in essence, yes, they are around them technically. But they are in private schools, nice neighborhoods, etc.

My opinion of Ole Miss folks in different than yours I guess. I've never been to Whiskey Alley to see those guys. And I agree most of the 'well to do' folks probably aren't as rich as they'd like people to believe. But they are elitist, materialistic, etc. They come from old money areas in MS, Little Rock, Nashville, Atlanta, and Dallas. Rich kid rejects.

I was invited to hunt at a very expensive/exclusive club in the delta a couple of years ago. The things I heard and saw from the bear alumni and money supporters while there was a shock to me. One constant theme was the ribbing back and forth about the upkeep of the individual hunting cabins and properties. Anything found in need of paint, clean up or repair was followed by "do I need to send my n-----s over to fix up your place for you." Even one of the Arkansas alumni in the group seemed a little embarrassed by the constant usage of that word.

That's clearer, but still not my experience. I've never picked up a prejudiced vibe from people that are well off enough to only be around minorities "technically." The only times I ever have picked up an open, prejudiced vibe (admittedly, not often) it's been from people that aren't well-off enough to do that. It's people that live in neighborhoods that aren't as nice as they used to be, and if they go to private school, it's not a nice one that offers a better than average education, it's an average to crappy one that only offers a good education when compared to the much worse public school that is the alternative. Not sure it really matters, just was surprised to see anyone associate racism with money, only because I would have guessed the correlation went in the opposite direction.
