I read that Blacksburg High School doesn't plan on punting very much (only in certain situations late in game) and they will on side kick every time.
I like this approach. Why give ball to opponent at every opportunity ? If they do not have ball they cannot score. (except on a safety).

I see too many teams punt the ball on 4th and one from near mid field almost every game. If a team cannot make a yard, they probably don't deserve to win.

It is a copied approach from this man.

I am surprised more teams don't go this route. Being conservative costs teams wins more than most realize .

Their coach was a QB at Richlands and he was groomed by Coach Mance. He has always taken risks, and it generally works to his advantage. This is probably a pretty good move. Even if you only get 1 onside back. That's one extra possession for you than you would have gotten otherwise. I like the thinking.

I also like fake punts. If teams would use a punter who can run, fake punts are easy to execute, especially against a team that likes to put pressure on punter. A couple key blocks, and you have a first down and keep the ball. (or score on fake).

A good defense would be a plus in this strategy.

It will be interesting to see if Blacksburg tries this on Friday. Giving Giles good field position every possession is not really a good idea.

I'm glad Blacksburg has telegraphed their plans. Giles better be working on their onside kick coverage. We all saw how that worked out last year. I'm still disgusted. Nothing against the kids, they just weren't prepared and Glenvar was smart enough to know it.

I think with Giles being a little down it should be a good game tomorrow night....this philosophy might work out....kinda like teams that like to blitz...live by it, die by it...we'll see soon enough
