but you know how that goes. They basically said the first team offense ran against the first team defense minus Cox, Boyd, McPhee, and Mitchel for almost the entire first 60 minute half. Everybody looked good except Relf had just a couple "wtf" throws. When the big boys came in, it didn't go as well. I'll leave out the obligatory "Favre will play" reference.

So basically, no information.

the guy was hitting port-o-lets last year- we need to expect a couple of these a game...it's going to happen

you got to figure Russell averages about 2 series per game for the season- and throws about 5-6 passes a game..and we average 22-23 passes per game...

That's my prediction

For the record- we averaged 22.5 passes per game last season

because there are going to be more "extended handoff" type passes as we try to get the ball to Bumphis, Heavens, Perkins, etc in space. Maybe they are laterals, tosses, or whatever, but I bet the number of true handoffs or keepers will be slightly lower than last year.

Anyone heard anything about this? Could be a good move with his size and speed. Supposed to be one of the fastest players on the team and great size.

Where are all the tough, ballsy ace reporters for the pack? Men without fear, intelligence to the max, who can infiltrate pass the fat boy student at the gate, who avoids the campus cop like a southern James Bond. My god, men, let's get off our lazy asses and take out the Swan and his evil operatives. FOR THE PACK!!

I don't think he ever played offense in HS. Anyhow, at his size and speed, he'd make for interesting matchup problems as a TE in our offense, assuming he can catch.

Guys his size are showing up on NFL rosters all over the place at wideout. Hell, the Chargers have 3 at 6'5 and over 230 - Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd and Legadu Nanee. Just look at Southern and DeAndre Brown.

If he truly has 4.5 speed, which seems to be the case as many have said he is one of the fastest on the team, he could fill the spot vacated by Wilder. Of course, like you said he has to be able to catch (but that really didnt stop us from playing Wilder).

If you are 6'5'' 230, strong, fast, and can catch, it doesn't matter where you line up, you are going to find ways to get open and cause headaches for defenses.

We have a 6'5/230 sub 4.5/40 WR that's been hiding in the DL depth chart for 2 years?

If that guy can run some decent routes and actually catch a pass, I can't wait to see how that helps us. We need another guy that can stretch the field vertically.

I'm sure his nickname is Stone Hands.

he could be physical blocking LB's and Safeties in the run game...every little bit helps

That Relf throws 3x as many passes this year as Russell?? I haven't weighed in on the argument of their pt, but Shirley you don't really think that Relf throws 3x as many passes.

misatkes and make excuses for Relf. I hope Relf has improved drastically on his passing but I dont know. He will face alot of 8 in the box defenses until he proves he can. Russell is just a RS FReshman, give him some time and he will be fine, Eli redshirted and sat almost all of his RFr year before he played. Russell will be good, very good in time.

According to a number of posters here, if you put 8 in the box against a ****** QB, you are playinginto Mullen's hands. I'll let themexplain the efficacy of this idiotic argument.

with Russell getting mostly 2nd team snaps, I dont think he plays anymore than 2 offensive series per game...that anywhere from 6-12 snaps...while Relf will be getting 50-55 snaps per game

Obviously if he plays more than that, then he will throw alot more passes- I just dont believe it until we see him play alot in the Auburn game...I think Mullen is playing it close to the vest to keep Memphis and Auburn guessing right now- there is no reason for Mullen to say one way or the other how he will play it

8 men in the box is very vulnerable to pick routes and play-action...it won't take him hitting just a few 60 yard TD passes and people will back da f#ck up again..safeties chasing Bumphis and Heavens down the center of the field could be problematic for defenses...not to mention CB's having to chase WR's on post routes down the center of the field

That's the million dollar question for our season- can Relf exploit that? We shall see

I worry more about Relf having to actually read a cover 2/man underneath coverage with Safeties reading his eyes and jumping the ball when he is staring down receivers. I see lots of struggle there. Giving Relf one read of man coverage with everybody walked up makes it alot easier for him.

From Veazey:

"Mullen said his team’s quarterbacks “started slow. Middle was great. Finished a little slow. ""

That sounds to me like Relf sucked, Russell did well, Favre sucked...

What say you?

1. Mullen himself has said that Russell is "not a package QB." We'll see him appear when we are up 3 touchdowns, or maybe down 3 touchdowns, but not in between. He also turns the ball over too much right now. That will change with experience, but right now it is what it is. Relf will have 4x the attempts of Russell this year just because he will have at least that much more playing time.

2. Relf will play because he challenges teams to put 8 men in the box. When that starts happening, we go five wide and Bumphis scores. When they readjust to that, Relf takes it in on the ground. He's not there to be a 60% passer, he's there to make sure the defense accounts for him, creating more one-on-one situations for the receivers and running backs. That's why this offense is successful. That's why it is a perfect fit for MSU. Your QB can be more of an athlete than a technician and be successful. You go to the line with a run and a pass play, there is a formula for calling the right one, and if you call a run, there is a formula for deciding if you keep it or not.

Like Coach said, all this hinges on Relf being able to be a serviceable passer. If he's not, we are screwed. If he is, we win a lot of games this year.

Russell will be a great QB at MSU, but he still has a lot to learn. I would rather him learn it in practice and against Alcorn State than against Auburn. Next year (or even late this year) the QB battle could get very interesting.
