Nonfootball: Why is the NCAA even debating Kanter's eligibility for UK?

Is there a precedent for this kind of situation? Am I understanding that this guy was paid $100K for playing in Europe?

I remember a while back when the NCAA denied eligibility to a guy who wanted to play football at Colorado because he had earned money as a oompetitive snow skier (or something like that). The NCAA said that because he had earned money (even in a different sport) he was a professional and thus couldn't play football.

In this situation, the guy supposedly earned money playing the sport he wants to play in college and they are considering it.

My guess is that he has to "pay back" the money, will sit out about five games and end up playing at UK. Which will be a total crock.

A player can play pro tennis and then come back and play college tennis. I think they have to be able to show that they their expenses were more than their winnings, which isn't really a problem for a struggling pro tennis player on the lower circuits, but would be damn near impossible for a pro basketball player at any level.

in addition to having food and housing being paid for.

I could see letting him play if the only thing he was receiving was food/housing payments or reimbursements - also assuming those are "reasonable" amounts. But, it's pretty obvious he was getting more than necessary to be viewed as breaking even. I don't see how there is any way they could let him play.

Does it matter? I didn't think you get take any type of money under any circumstances.

How do the AAU circuits work? I assume they have their travel expenses paid for or reimbursed?

didn't we have a backup QB that played minor league baseball a couple years ago? The cross-sports thing is a little different and a tougher call, but this Kanter crap is ridiculous... he has been paid to play THIS SPORT professionally, so I don't see him being eligible without some deep-pocket-digging by UK boosters.

last week on one of the ESPN channels. They were interviewing him at some game, and he brought up Bost (said the NCAA made the right decision). He also made what Bost did sound worse than it was (no mention about getting his paperwork in just a little late, etc.).

Jeremy Bloom? I think he got to play college ball after his skiing career. He was a heck of a kick returner for the Buffs.

that endorsement money was involved. From what I remember the NCAA told him he could ski and receive the winnings but couldn't accept endorsement deals or sponsorships. Same as Tom Zbikowski when he boxed professionally between his Junior and Senior season at Notre Dame.
